Facial reconstruction of a 3,600-year-old Mycenaean Greek In the... middle of the 20th century, archaeologists discovered in Mycenae Grave Circle B, another royal cemetery that preceded Grave Circle A. The burial complex was discovered accidentally in 1951 when workers were excavating a nearby 13th-century BCE tomb known as the Tomb of Clytemnestra. Grave Circle B consists of 26 graves, dated to 1675–1550 BC, including 14 shaft graves. The shafts, up to 12 meters deep, were marked by burial mounds or stone stelae. The cemetery was probably used for about 100 years. The remains of 35 individuals were found in the graves. The large number of undisturbed graves allowed archaeologists to gain insight into the life of the Mycenaean elite of that time. In the women’s graves, many ornaments were found: earrings, necklaces, and gold and silver pins. Alongside the male skeletons were swords, daggers, and arrowheads; men’s clothing was decorated with gold. In one of the graves, a helmet made entirely of boar’s tusks was discovered. There are more female skeletons than male ones, and overall the female burials are richer. A unique find is a posthumous mask made of electrum, which was not placed on the deceased’s face but kept in a wooden box beside him. Another interesting artifact is a duck-shaped bowl made of rock crystal. Unlike the remains from Grave Circle A, the skeletons from the burials of Grave Circle B are well preserved. The bones of the men show traces of combat injuries, suggesting that some of these individuals likely died in battle. As early as the 1950s, it was suggested that members of several (probably four) noble families were buried in Cemetery B over 3–4 generations. To test this hypothesis, in 1995 anthropologists reconstructed faces from seven skulls found in the burials. Researchers discovered a clear resemblance between two individuals — Z59 and F51 — and divided the seven buried individuals into three groups: “heart-shaped,” “elongated,” and “beak-shaped” faces. In 2008, a genetic study was conducted on 22 skeletons from Grave Circle A. Samples were taken from mandibles and clavicles. Mitochondrial DNA was successfully obtained from four individuals, showing that a man and woman from the same grave (where the posthumous mask was found) were brother and sister. Researchers believe that both men and women of the royal lineage in this ancient society inherited power by right of birth. The skull of an individual from grave Sigma (Σ131) is particularly well preserved. It is the only one in which the lower jaw was present. It is believed that he may have been the founder of the dynasty that established this cemetery, since his grave is one of the earliest in Circle B. There were no pottery or metal objects in his grave, but the burial was marked by a large heap of stones. The anthropologist Lawrence Angel reckoned that he lived to be about 55 years old, judging from the exostoses on his shoulders and feet. Although today these would not be considered precise indicators of age—and his dental age may have been slightly younger than 55—he was still the oldest of all those buried in Circle B. Angel described him as a massively built man, big enough to draw attention in a crowd, and estimated his height at 1.75 m. He suffered from osteoporosis and had a large abscess above the upper right permanent lateral incisor.show more

What was even luckier was that my assigned spot was in top 10%, so I was quite close to the stage. That year, the time given to BTS for the year-end stage was over 30 minutes, it was like a mini concert. They did pre-recordings for several songs while changing the stage sets and also did rehearsal for the next day’s live broadcast, so I was able to watch them closely for a long time. And the one who left the strongest impression on me, even more than my bias, was SeokJin. When the PD-nim had messages or directions to convey to the members about the stage, or when he had something to discuss, he mostly communicated with SeokJin. And SeokJin took on the role of relaying all the messages to the other members. While managing the stage, if there were small details like, for example, if a jacket taken off during the performance was left there when it might get caught on camera and look messy, so make sure to throw it over to the back of the set, things like that. Jin relayed all those messages and directions to the members, and if there were members who couldn’t follow that direction, he quietly took care of small details behind the scenes, like quickly tossing away the jacket that was left behind when the camera was on other members. He was handling those little details behind the scene quietly alone with care, that was my impression. Even though he's the eldest, he's not the leader, not the main vocalist, nor the choreography leader, so when BTS is all together, I personally feel that the spotlight rarely shines on him. Also, since he's not the type of hyung who bosses around other members, saying, "I'm your senior," it’s probably not easy for SeokJin to leave a strong impression (*to casual viewers/general public) But the deeper you look into BTS, the more you see that SeokJin is a true gem, quietly working behind the scenes and taking good care of his younger members with a genuinely beautiful heart. While watching SeokJin for hours in moments that weren’t captured on camera, what I felt was that he’s truly sincere, attentive and meticulous, leading by examples with a strong sense of responsibility. And while taking care of everything like that, he’s not interested in taking credit for the things he did, he just quietly accomplished everything without drawing attention, his presence was like salt and light, I felt. I think this is why there are so many heartwarming stories about SeokJin in the entertainment industry. More revelations are coming out about Jim Goad, including... the revelation that the criticism people leveled at him online---including myself---may have played a role in the crushing depression that led him to take his own life. In his podcast yesterday memorializing Goad, Gavin McInnes states that he believes Goad's 2024 debate with Owen Benjamin broke Goad mentally. Not only is he visibly tired and flustered during the debate, Benjamin accused Goad of abandoning his severely autistic son. According to McInnes, after the debate, Goad told McInnes, "He's right. I did abandon my son." Apparently this was the first time Goad ever conceded that one of his critics was right about him. McInnes---a close friend of Goad's---also claims "in many ways, he was already dead. Last time I spoke to him, I had solutions to his problems, but he wasn't interested." I was the one who discovered what Goad did to his son all the way back in 2018; around the time of the infamous Luke Ford stream (where me, Nick Fuentes, Baked Alaska, and a bunch of others clowned on Goad for hours), a local Atlanta TV station ran a story about how Goad's then ten-year-old son had formed a bond with a local Santa. Goad had split up with his wife Shannon some years before, admitting in one of his podcasts that he was the one who filed for divorce. Goad was so angered by this expose that he recorded and published a phone call with his ex-wife where he refuted the idea that he was a "deadbeat dad." Nobody accused him of being a deadbeat. He was accused of abandoning his disabled son to be raised in a broken home. Goad's self-image of a dedicated truth-telling emotionally unaffected loner and his critics being jilted fans was a carefully constructed lie. He was extremely sensitive to criticism and carefully curated his online image. This included trying to deplatform his critics (as he tried to do to me; in addition to false-flagging my YouTube channel, he successfully got me banned from Medium and may have gotten my website taken down in 2019 through false reports to my webhost), viciously attacking anyone who criticized him even mildly, no matter how obscure they were (as Andy Nowicki reveals in a recent video), and manipulating others into defending him publicly. If you ever got into an online argument with Jim Goad and he felt like he was losing (aka every argument), you'd immediately get dogpiled by a bunch of his friends and exes backing him up. Goad even severed relationships with people he felt were insufficiently willing to defend his honor. For years, he bragged that my ex Ann Sterzinger was going to write a tell-all book about me that would completely destroy my reputation, most recently in a 2022 podcast with Greg Johnson (I believe he ALSO brought it up in an 2023 interview with Ethan Ralph, but don't quote me on that). Sterzinger confessed in private messages that Goad pushed her to write the book to "save his reputation" and became violently angry with her when she never finished it. She also denounced him as a narcissist following the end of their friendship, accused him of lying, said he would complain about "how the fame he pretends he never really wanted never really came his way," and claimed that in 2018, he manipulated her into "pretend[ing] to be OK after being raped" so he could use her as a weapon in his upcoming "debate" with me. Sterzinger also admits that Goad would privately shit-talk his supposed "friends," claiming he shit-talked Gavin McInnes to her and shit-talked her to McInnes. This is corroborated by emails I exchanged with Goad's former friend/co-host Keith Lee. Keith also stated back in 2018 that Goad was "losing control" due to his inability to curate how he was perceived online. Does any of this diminish Goad's influence as a writer? No. But the reality that he lied about himself and others constantly and sought to destroy anyone who criticized him was a consistent feature of his personality. The fact that me and others may have played a role in his depression and suicide makes me feel terrible, even if I was justified in attacking him for what he tried to do to me. I discussed this with a friend and he hypothesized that as Goad's health worsened, it stripped him of his usual coping mechanisms and forced him to confront his personal traumas and lifelong abusive behavior, and he simply couldn't cope. The real bomb in his brain was not his tumor, but his guilt. In any event, if there's an afterlife, I hope he's found some peace.show more

I genuinely cannot understand how someone can watch this... story and still stand there, looking at two women, and somehow decide that the wrong one is the victim. On one side, you have a girl (Yıldız) who has been mistreated her entire life. Since the moment she was born, she was treated like a sacrifice for a conflict she was never even part of and later we find out that this conflict never even existed. Her right to study was taken from her. She was pushed into a marriage at a very young age just imagine being six, seven, eight years old, living in fear of being tied to someone you don’t even know. She was treated like a servant in her own home, by the very people she thought were her family. And just when she gets close to the happiness she dreamed of, the man she was engaged to shows up with another wife. She gets mistreated by that wife, by his family, and even (unintentionally) by him, because he was trying to run away from his own feelings, and that only caused her more heartbreak. The whole world was literally against her. She fought through all of that, only to find out in the end that everything she suffered for was based on something that wasn’t even real. Her entire life was built on a lie. That she isn’t even part of that family that she has literally no one in this world. Now on the other side… You have a girl (Melek) who, yes, was taken from her biological mother but she was raised by loving parents. She had everything anyone could wish for: education, freedom, a happy childhood, a healthy environment. She lived her life, fell in love, went out, made choices and no one questioned her, no one controlled her. And then what did she do? She found out that her man was engaged to another woman before marrying her (and even saw him marry her) and instead of holding on to her dignity, she chose to stay, to fight for a man who lied to her, to hold onto a marriage he tried to end multiple times. She used her unborn child to keep him tied to her. She lied constantly, and her excuse was that she was “protecting her marriage” a marriage that was already broken from the moment Serhat removed that ring at the airport in episode one. She tried to hand Yıldız (a woman who had already suffered enough) over to dangerous people. Then she found out the truth about her own birth (that her father ra*ped her mother.)And still no empathy. No moment of humanity toward her own mother. All she cared about was herself. And even though none of this had anything to do with Yıldız, she still found a way to blame it on her. Instead of holding her father accountable, she went and made a deal with him to get rid of Yıldız. She literally made a deal with the devil just to hurt Yıldız one more time. And after all of that… you want me to feel sorry for her? You want me to call her a victim? I honestly cannot believe we are living on the same planet with people who see this and still say, “she’s the victim.” Not morally. Not logically. Not emotionally. For me, a small gesture in this brief video... shows what kind of person Pope Francis was. Last summer, Pope Francis was reported to have used an Italian-language slur for LGBTQ people and made some negative comments about gay priests. It seemed so out of character with the person I knew, had met and corresponded with, and who had always expressed his desire to care for LGBTQ people pastorally. Not long after these reports, in June, I was at the Vatican, having helped to arrange a papal audience for comedians. A few days before that audience, I met with the Holy Father at the Casa Santa Marta and we talked about his comments. For me, it was hard to bring up the topic, but a cardinal friend of mine encouraged me. But Pope Francis seemed eager to talk about it and told me he knew many holy and faithful gay seminarians and priests, and encouraged me to share his comments publicly, which I did (after asking him a few times exactly how to word it). And it turned out that he didn’t realize how offensive the slur was and said he’d never use it again. After that, the conversation turned to other, more relaxed, matters: the US church, the Synod, and so on. It happened to be the 25th anniversary of my ordination to the priesthood and so before leaving Casa Santa Marta, I knelt down and he blessed me. As always, it was a great gift to be with him. A few days later, at the papal audience for comedians, along with the rest of the guests, I was invited up to greet the Holy Father in the Sala Clementina, which was captured in this video. You can see that I thank him for inviting me and my laughing because we joked about my being a "famous American comedian." I start to leave, since I know he’s busy, but then he gently pulls me back and surprised me by thanking me for our conversation a few days earlier. He said that he needed to hear that and was grateful for our conversation and then gave me a thumbs up. Afterwards, I thought: Who does that? What world leader thanks someone for a challenging conversation? Two weeks ago I fixed one of my teeth... with algorithms I wrote a couple of years ago! I got hooked by 3D scanning when I started to work for a software shop in Zurich that was programming 3D computational geometry algorithms for denture scanning to produce crowns (and more). Back then, a typical reconstruction pipeline was like: scan the patient’s teeth using an intraoral scanner, reconstruct the surface mesh, design the restoration digitally, and finally mill the crown out of ceramic. We were working mostly with point clouds and meshes, but it wasn’t just math, it was craftsmanship translated into a digital process. Every micron mattered. You could literally see how a good algorithm meant a better fit in someone’s mouth. Gaussian Splatting isn’t about surface reconstruction, it’s about appearance reconstruction. It doesn’t care about explicit topology, it captures how light interacts with the scene. In a sense, it’s the opposite philosophy of the dental world: instead of modeling what the object is, it models how the object looks. 3D Gaussian Splatting enables applications like training self driving cars, teaching robots to understand their environment, creating virtual worlds, or monitoring real sites. It represents scenes as millions of small Gaussians rendered in real time without the need for meshes or textures. Coming from a world where precision geometry was everything, this shift felt natural. It’s still about reconstruction, but with a different goal: not manufacturing a perfect object, but reproducing how the world actually looks.
