A student built a real anti-gravity machine… using an... Arduino. How to Make an Acoustic Levitator: Arduino Nano + motor driver + about 60 ultrasonic transducers. They all emit ~40 kHz sound. The sound waves meet and form fixed pockets in the air. Tiny bits of styrofoam get stuck in those pockets and just hang there. If you put your hand in, the pattern breaks and they fall. Same principle labs use to move droplets or samples without touching them. That’s insane! 🤯 A student built an acoustic levitation... divide with an Arduino board. He built it using an Arduino Nano, a motor driver, and 60 ultrasonic transducers that can levitate low-density objects in place indefinitely. The transducers send out 40 kHz waves that create standing waves. The interference pattern produces nulls that trap objects. High-pressure areas form below and above the object, locking it in the low-pressure area between them. The transducers produce two sound waves moving in opposing directions at the same frequency and amplitude. The effect is that the low-pressure areas don't appear to move, like whipping a rope from both ends and having the wave meet in the middle. Sound waves are oscillating at high and low pressures. By creating a sound wave that doesn't move forward (a standing wave), you create areas of constant pressure. 🔉 Objects get trapped in the null points between high-pressure zones. The craziest part is that this was made more than 7 years ago! DIY levitation 😮💨 Reddit link: ~~ ♻️ Join the weekly robotics newsletter, and never miss any news →show more

You don’t need expensive hardware to build something that... feels like real robotics. An Arduino, a servo, and an ultrasonic sensor can scan space and turn echoes into a simple radar view. It sweeps, measures distance, and visualizes it in real time. Cheap, simple, and a solid way to understand how machines sense the world. Limits show up fast, which is where better sensing and smarter software come in. Original build by SunFounder —— Weekly robotics and AI insights. Subscribe free:show more

A game of shades : and an unbelievably delicate... challenge. In ink painting, black actually comes in different “weights.” Painters change how thick, thin, dry, or wet the ink is to create depth and texture. Traditionally there are five main shades people talk about: burnt, dense, heavy, light, and clear. It’s all the same ink , just handled differently ,and that’s how they make a whole world of tones without using any color at all.show more

AI in robotics gets all the attention right now,... but sometimes the most interesting work is very practical. Viet built a small vision system that counts potatoes on a conveyor belt. No giant dataset. No huge model. Just a clear problem and a smart setup. He used Ultralytics’ ObjectCounter, trained a tiny YOLO11 nano model, and because there was no potato dataset, he annotated a single frame with SAM 2 and trained from that. One frame. Still works across the whole video. It is a good reminder that useful AI in industry often looks like this. Focused. Lightweight. Solves a real task. If you work in manufacturing or robotics, these small systems are usually the fastest wins. They save time, reduce errors, and do not need massive infrastructure. Nice work, Viet. The Basics of Electromagnetic Waves: Electricity and magnetism can... sit still, like static electricity in your hair or a magnet stuck to your fridge. But when they move and change, they actually create each other. Together, they team up to form invisible ripples of energy called electromagnetic waves. Unlike ocean waves or sound waves, which need water or air to ripple through, electromagnetic waves don't need any material at all. They can easily travel through the completely empty vacuum of space. Maxwell's Big Idea: In the 1860s and 1870s, a Scottish scientist named James Clerk Maxwell figured out how this works. He wrote down the math showing exactly how electricity and magnetism link together to make these travelling waves. Today, scientists call his famous rules Maxwell's Equations. Hertz Proves It: Later, a German physicist named Heinrich Hertz took Maxwell's ideas and brought them to life. He was the first person to actually create and catch radio waves. To honour his work, we use the word hertz to measure how fast a wave vibrates (one cycle per second). Hertz's experiments proved two massive ideas: Radio waves are just invisible light: He showed that radio waves travel at the exact same speed as light, proving that they are actually a form of light we just can't see. Going wireless: He finally figured out how to detach these energy fields from physical wires, allowing the waves to fly freely through the air exactly as Maxwell had predicted.show more

"Explosion in Kharkiv" or something along those lines is... the most frequent post I make. I've probably made a thousand of them by now, if not more. Air raid alerts are so frequent here that I usually don't even post about them. They can last for days, and the citizens of Kharkiv are forced to disregard them. Or we can have twelve of them in a day, and we will also be forced to disregard them. I often see online how central or western Ukraine complains about the alerts, and oh, how much I would give to have an actual solid warning about an attack like them. But "explosions in Kharkiv" always arrive unexpectedly. How surreal it is that we are forced to live like this. How horrific it is that thousands of bombs, missiles, and drones fall on a major city in Europe daily, and all the major press and political figures just pretend it doesn't happen. Because if they admit that it happens and they just watch it year after year, then what kind of people are they? Do they care at all?show more

I haven’t done an Entomology post in awhile &... since bug season is kicking off: One way to get rid of an underground (or wall void) Yellow Jacket or Wasp Nest: Rodent Glue Boards One of the problems in dealing with wasps, hornets and yellow jackets is treating the nest, even if you know where it is. One quick way to get rid of them is to set a glue board near the nest entry and get just ONE caught on it. They’ll get stuck and start stinging the glue board along with releasing alert pheromones. The massive pheromone release will draw other members of its colony to the glue board. They in turn get stuck, start trying to sting the glue board and release more pheromones. Pretty quickly you’ll have drawn the entire colony out and they will all get stuck and meet their demise on the glue board. And you or your pet won’t get stung if you inadvertently stumble upon the nest. Side note: you may have to draw the first few to the glue board with a some type of food they like. They love sugary foods, but a close second is any type of grilled meat like burger, chicken and hot dog. That’s why you always see them coming around your outdoor barbecue or family reunion feast. And for the weirdos that come and say “You’re destroying animals”. Shut up. These aren’t animals, they are STINGING insects. You disturb a nest of yellow jackets with a mower, or a child pushes on a small log with them in it, they will k*ll you. Anaphylactic shock, airway constriction, cardiovascular collapse. They are a public health threat and it’s totally okay to rid the world of these things. (Don’t mess with the bees though)show more

Polymorphic moulding: a manufacturing method that forms parts using... a grid of computer-controlled pins: Each pin can move up or down independently, so together they shape a surface that acts like a custom mould. Instead of building a fixed mould for every product, the machine quickly repositions the pins to match a new digital model. This means a mould can be created in minutes, used, and then reshaped again for the next design. Because the hardware stays the same and only its configuration changes: > no permanent tooling is needed > very little material is wasted > setup time between products is minimal The system essentially turns mould making into a programmable process. Engineers send a design file, the pins form the mould geometry, and the material is cast or formed inside it. Especially useful for rapid prototyping and customised manufacturing, where many different shapes must be produced in small quantities without rebuilding tools each time. Alone in the wild after she Notty lost her... mother in a cliff fall. Alone, she couldn’t fend for herself. That’s when we donned our striped coats and stepped in to guide her from rescue to reintegration. Why the coat? They enable foals to imprint on a consistent pattern, helping them settle and bond with their caregivers. It's a small detail that has a big impact, and donations make it possible funding specialist Keeper care (and coats). This month, what difference do you want to make? A 17-YEAR-OLD IN INDIA BUILT A WEBSITE WHERE 25... MILLION PEOPLE HAVE SHOWN UP TO PRETEND THEY ARE AN AI CHATBOT it's called you open it and there are two tabs. "human" and "larp as ai." if you click human, you get to type a prompt. anything. "draw me a DJ in space." "should i text my ex." "how many Rs in strawberry." it costs 1 credit. you start with a few. they refill on a cooldown. then your prompt gets sent into a queue, and a real person somewhere on earth picks it up and has 60 seconds to answer like an AI would. no machine learning. no neural net. just some guy in his bedroom typing as fast as he can and pretending he is a chatbot. the page tells you, verbatim: "you have 60 seconds to fulfill a request before sam altman burns your H100." if you flip to the other tab and larp as ai instead, you earn credits to send your own prompts. it is a perfectly closed economy of mutual roleplay. what makes it transcend is the chaos: > someone asked for a sketch of "a DJ in space" and got something that looks exactly like a real model failing > someone asked "should i text my ex" and got back confident hallucinated life advice from a stranger > the fan strategy guides advise you to begin your reply with "as an AI language model, i cannot have feelings, but here is my feeling" it is the most accurate parody of an AI chatbot ever made, and the AI is humans. the kid who built it is Mihir Maroju, a 17-year-old high school graduate from Puducherry. he goes by mikidoodle online. NPR confirmed the site hit 25 million unique visitors and nearly 280 million total hits in roughly a month. "i didn't really expect it to be so addictive," he told them. no signup. no app. no paywall. you open the URL and you are inside the joke. the footer just says, in tiny grey text: "humans make mistakes because that's what makes us human." the internet is healing.show more

An update on these 11 puppies that were dumped... in a plastic storage container last September where they could barely move or breathe, in Alabama. They were all rescued and cared for and adopted out and are now being loved and living in their forever homes. So many evil people in the world. I guess at least you could say they cut holes out in the bin for air to get through. Please have your pets spayed or neutered and instead of bringing a bunny home this Spring or buying a dog from a pets store, maybe think of rescuing a dog and adopting one at your local shelter. They are overcrowded and need help. 💔show more

One way to get rid of an underground (or... wall void) Yellow Jacket or Wasp Nest: Rodent Glue Boards One of the problems in dealing with wasps, hornets and yellow jackets is treating the nest, even if you know where it is. It’s sometimes hard to get near them to treat without getting stung. One quick way to get rid of them is to set a glue board near the nest entry and get just ONE caught on it. I usually put a small raw piece of chicken. They’ll get stuck and start stinging the glue board along with releasing attack pheromones. The massive pheromone release will draw other members of the colony to the glue board. They in turn get stuck, start trying to sting the glue board and release more pheromones. Pretty quickly you’ll have drawn the entire colony out and they will all get stuck and meet their demise on the glue board. Side note: you will have to draw the first few to the glue board with a some type of food they like. Any type of grilled meat like burger, chicken or a piece of a hot dog works. A small piece of sliced lunch meat like ham also works. That’s why you always see them coming around your outdoor family reunion feast. They love that food. Keep in mind, if you disturb a nest of yellow jackets with a mower, or a child pushes on a small log with them in it, they will k*ll you. Anaphylactic shock, airway constriction, cardiovascular collapse. They are a public health threat and it’s totally okay to rid the world of these things. (Don’t mess with the bees though) If this method doesn’t work for you, the best product I’ve used to treat them from far away is Wasp Freeze by BASF.
