"December 26th, 2024, Safe Haven Shelter, Denver, Colorado, 3:00... PM. Staff Sergeant David Martinez, 40, was in an exam room discussing adoption with shelter director Sarah. His dog, Duke, had lived with him in Helmand Province, Afghanistan, from 2009 to 2010. Duke was in an adjacent room for a health check before adoption, separated by a one-way observation window. Duke saw David through the glass. Security footage shows him jumping at the window, cracking it, jumping again, and breaking through completely, landing in the exam room with a bleeding shoulder cut, jumping on David repeatedly. This was filmed yesterday at Second Chance Animal Shelter.... The veteran is David. The dog is Scout, a four-year-old Border Collie. Eleven months ago, David lost his housing and had to surrender Scout. It destroyed him. Last month, David got into a transitional housing program specifically for veterans. First thing he did? Started searching. He called, visited, and emailed 52 different shelters across three counties. Found Scout listed online two days ago at Second Chance. When David walked in yesterday with his case worker, Scout froze. Completely still. For a full ten seconds. Like his brain couldn't process that David was real. Then Scout started spinning. Frantic circles. Crying. High-pitched whines. Then he launched himself at David. Wrapped his paws around David's neck and wouldn't let go. Both of them collapsed. Scout was shaking so hard. David was sobbing. Staff gave them thirty minutes alone in the room. Scout never stopped shaking. Never unwrapped from David's neck. David told us: "| promised him I'd come back. I promised."
