I've been testing out Windows 11's new Haptic Signals... feature on compatible hardware, and I think I love it. I'm someone who yearns for small UX details like this, and I'm so happy to see Microsoft leaning into subtle but quality UX implementations like haptics across the Windows Shell. These new Haptic Signals provide a subtle bump when interacting with certain UI elements and actions, such as snapping app windows or dragging files in File Explorer. The feedback response feels great and intentional, and makes using the OS feel more satisfying. There's still room for improvement, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't impressed with this first implementation. It's only supported on a handful of devices for now, but that should change over time. I've always loved the haptic feedback layered throughout Google Pixel phones, and now Windows is getting its own version of it. More UX niceties like this, please!show more

You’ve just inherited your family’s old homeplace, but not... the money to restore it. The boards are weathered. The windows are tired. Microsoft's new Outlook takes more than 10 seconds to... open an email via notifications, while Outlook Classic opens instantly on Windows 11! The funniest part? If I ignore the notification, open Outlook manually, find the email myself, and click it, I can finish faster than the notification flow. It's all because Outlook for Windows is literally Microsoft Edge running Outlook .com in a browser window. New Outlook runs through WebView2 with around 10 separate processes: GPU process, service worker, utility processes, manager, and more. It uses roughly 490MB to 636MB RAM while idle, compared to Outlook Classic sitting around 117MB to 148MB. CPU usage is also worse: around 4% idle on new Outlook versus under 1% on Classic in my testing. Microsoft shut down Mail and Calendar, keeps pushing enterprises toward this web wrapper, and still wants people to believe it is the future of email on Windows. SHAME!show more

Windows 11 is getting "accelerated app launches," and I... tested it on a PC with just 4GB RAM. Surprisingly, Microsoft Edge now opens much faster when other apps are already running, and Microsoft says this feature will eventually be available to other Windows apps, too! Previously, when Edge was already running in the background and you opened it from the taskbar, Start menu, or a link, Windows would create an extra, temporary process just to tell the existing Edge instance to open. The process would then exit. With the new accelerated launch feature, Windows skips that unnecessary process and sends the request directly to the running instance of Edge. I tested it before and after installing KB5127936 on a Windows 11 virtual machine with a paltry 4GB RAM. Before the update, Edge opened fairly quickly when the PC wasn't doing much, but there was a noticeable delay when Store and Paint were open. After the update, Edge opened surprisingly faster under the same conditions. To be clear, this only improves warm launches, where the app is already running in the background. Opening Edge for the first time after a restart won't benefit from this feature. This feature will also come to other apps, as Windows 11 keeps getting better!show more
