Been looking for one clip I think summarizes PIT’s... struggles in the passing game and I think I found it. 1. Bills double Metcalf (top of the screen) by pressing him and shading with the safety. 2. Four-over-three zone coverage to the bottom. None of the receivers can find open grass early in the route. 3. Spin move from Bosa versus Fautanu creates pressure. If the pocket stays clean, Rodgers may be able to hang in and target Washington, who is coming free on the crossing route. Instead he bails to his right and the play turns into a scramble drill. 4. Wilson comes open early in the scramble but Rodgers isn’t in position to get him the ball. Everything else is locked down, and he has to throw it away. There it is in a nutshell. The defense takes away Metcalf, jams up everything underneath, creates quick pressure to disrupt the pocket, and Rodgers gets antsy and has to dirt his throw. I think #Eagles QB Jalen Hurts left a big... play on the field here to A.J. Brown in the first half. Brown motions to align on the same side as DeVonta Smith, and Smith clears out while Brown runs a deep in-breaker. Hurts seems to look at Brown but turns down the throw and leaves the pocket. Could have even thrown to Jahan Dotson on the corner route at the bottom of the screen.show more

Final three plays from the Steelers yesterday. First one... is double-slant/flat to the trips side. Rodgers expects MVS to continue inside but he whips back out. Second one is another miscommunication between Rodgers and MVS. Rodgers seems to be expecting MVS to hitch/post up but MVS runs a fade. Third one looks like a playground route where Rodgers said in the huddle, “Get open.” Really disappointing that they targeted MVS all three plays. With limited reps between him and Rodgers, the miscommunications are not a surprise. I get having Gainwell chip Garrett, but on at least one of these I would have liked to see them work the ball to Gainwell in space. These are quick throws. Cook could have handled Garrett without help. Also would have liked to work the MOF with Freiermuth. Feels like the Steelers should have had a concept they could run here rather than a bunch of isolation routes.show more

You can see how Dallas spreads its receivers from one sideline to another to widen the defense, then attacks the seams this stretch creates. To make these designs effective, WRs will need to recognize open areas in zone coverage and sit down in them, and the QB will need to get the ball out accurately and on time.show more

His stats & usage have been tied to the Giants QB play On this key 3rd&8 in a one-score game, he gets wide open for what would've been a game-changing play. The throw was wildly off target. WR's past reality: The throw had NO air under it. Just a flat, line drive overthrow. The hope: Russell Wilson WILL put air under it, throw it more toward the sideline, and let the WRs run under it.show more

Looking back at Nabers' unrealized air yards.. This was... a play the Giants called in an open-media practice in August. Nabers had four steps on the CB. The ball hung up & Flott got a PBU. They tried it in a real game. Got the look they wanted (easier to see from sideline angle), but the ball has to be led to the sideline. Far hash throw. Not easy. This play was then scrapped for the rest of the year. The question is does Daboll have faith to bring it back with Russ? Russ may not have the biggest arm but he can put air under it and make this throw.show more

Let’s break it down: 👇 #1 starts with a face off win. Low to high. #2 D to D (spread the defense out) and find Scheifele who rolled off his check at the dot and found space on a wheel route behind the net to find open ice on the other side of the zone. (Dot width). Aka Get lost in space. Create confusion. #3 Morrissey distributes the puck back down to MS who then corrals the pill and surveys his options while getting his toe caps back down ice towards the net, at worst presenting as a shooting option himself. #4 And the key to this whole play? Offense away from the puck. Kyle Connor recognizes time and space and gets available for a one timer by putting himself in a shooting position leaving the slot and fanning out. This 2d and 10 play in the 2Q of... the #Eagles-Chiefs game caught my eye live because it was one of a few attempted deep shots, and while Jalen Hurts may have been expected to pull the trigger to DeVonta Smith up top on the dagger/go double move, I questioned the route concepts and spacing on my latest podcast episode with Mike Sielski. I’ve since asked a few impartial sources that are more experts on this sort of thing, and while they both qualified their answers with not knowing intent, etc., they thought, yes, Hurts could have thrown it, but the Chiefs also got him off the first read, and still had safety help over top, although it looked like Smith got him to turn his hips at the break. Jahan Dotson was the No. 2 at the bottom, and he should be separating when Hurts moves off No. 1. Chiefs had him covered, though, in man. Normally, that route can be more intermediate and/or over the middle. Doesn’t have to be, but another source agreed you’d like to have at least an intermediate No. 3 underneath in Hurts’ line of vision. Clearly that wasn’t the case here. Hurts had all sorts of time and no obvious options after 1 and 2. Calcaterra stayed in to chip, and Barkley to block to set up the shot. All makes sense. Perhaps Calcaterra as the No. 3 could have kept going into the void over the middle on an option route? Nothing egregious here. No easy answers. But thought I’d provide more analysis on a play that I questioned live and in the podcast. Either way, the Eagles are struggling to get guys open downfield deep and on intermediate routes and, at least on Sunday, Hurts maybe missed a few early chances. He and Smith told me after the game that they thought they were “chasing it” too often in the first half. Kevin Patullo’s game planning was more conservative in the 2H and that ended up being enough. But he probably knows it isn’t sustainable.show more
