DOM3 is made from HTML, CSS and Javascript, closer... to a document than a canvas. It's a strange contemporary material that shapes much of our digital lives. The rhythm of endless creation and deletion in DOM3 is a self-driving version of what happens when you browse the web. "The Document Object Model (DOM) connects web pages to scripts or programming languages by representing the structure of a document—such as the HTML representing a web page—in memory." A html element, and a rectangle on a canvas, are not the same thing. It's a different material. Even if it all ends up controlling the same pixels, the process is different. The html element kind of actually exists, in this abstract context of a document object model. And in memory, in the moment. If it was possible to measure its weight, it would be heavier than a pixel on a canvas.show more

One of my favorite details of Sonner: By default... the toast disappears after 4 seconds unless you hover over it. But what if a toast is triggered and the user switches to a different tab? 4 seconds would pass and the toast would never be seen. That’s why there’s a `useIsDocumentHidden` hook that checks if the document (tab) is hidden, and if so, it will pause the timer. This can be done with the "visibilitychange" event listener on the document. A small detail that improves the experience.show more

The worst take about the web is that you... should not use JS/React/etc because HTML alone is good enough. It's an 'austerity mind virus' that has captured even some smart engineers. The idea that the web is for 'documents' and if it stays in its own little box like 1995 it's going to somehow be better for the world. This is how we ended up with Safari having the most obnoxious limitations, including a back/forward navigation gesture that makes the web feel like a horrendous 'digital book' of sorts. No, the web is also for dynamic, rich, interactive applications. JS is a key ingredient in the recipe, otherwise every click and interaction will have to hit a server, feel slow, and we'll always be a second class citizen. The web's developer freedom & better deployment model will win in the end, but it can't come at the expense of quality.show more

🚨Gemini 3.6 Flash is trash I tested it on... a 3D Golden Gate Bridge, and the results were awful. • I had to re-prompt it three times because it repeatedly ignored the instructions. • First attempt, instead of creating the requested .html file, it first tried to build the experience inside the Gemini app using simulations. • Then second attempt it started placing images from the web into the chat rather than actually producing the file. • Even after getting it to complete the task, the final output was dramatically worse than Gemini 3.1 Pro, which is 5 months old and now not even a top 10 model on leaderboards. This feels like a regression from Gemini 3.5 Flash and honestly, it is one of the weakest models I have tested in the past few months. There is a room in Málaga that was built... to be the closest thing on earth to standing inside heaven. It is called the camarín of the Virgin of Victory, and it is hidden at the top of a tower inside the Santuario de la Victoria. To reach it, you climb and the ascent is the entire point... The building you are climbing through was completed in 1700, and it was designed as a single argument made in stone. At the bottom lies a crypt: a black chamber crowded with white plaster skeletons, a meditation on death and the brevity of life. From there a staircase rises, and as you climb it the light grows stronger and the imagery changes from bones to saints. The architects of the time understood this ascent as the soul's own journey, the dark crypt as the stage of penitence, the staircase as the stage of spiritual progress, and the room at the very top as the final stage: the union of the soul with the divine. That room at the top is the camarín, and its dome is one of the most extraordinary interiors in Spain... Every surface is covered in white and gold plasterwork. There is no empty space anywhere. The Baroque called this horror vacui, the horror of the void: the conviction that a space meant to represent heaven should not contain a single bare patch of stone. Out of that plasterwork emerge angels, flowers, birds, and mirrors. The mirrors are not decoration alone. They catch the light pouring in through the windows of the drum and throw it around the chamber, so that the gold seems to move and the whole room appears to shimmer and breathe. This wonder was built by people who believed that if you wanted to show a human being what heaven might feel like, you did not describe it to them. In some women, it may be very thin and elastic, while in others, it may be minimal or barely noticeable. This is completely a normal anatomical variation. A common misconception is that changes in the hymen occur only due to sexual intercourse. In reality, factors such as certain physical activities or tampon use can also lead to stretching or changes in this tissue.
