I'm very proud to launch and introduce my design... studio: Antitype. I've been convinced for several years that design will be the work of my life, and this studio is the starting point. A few days ago, a well-known designer publicly announced he was quitting design, overwhelmed by what AI is now capable of producing. A lot of designers share that feeling right now. I don't share it at all. I actually believe it's never been more important to create, to innovate on your product, your interfaces, your art direction. Differentiation has become key for ambitious companies looking to escape the standardisation that AI can generate. There’s a feeling of “wtf is a designer anymore”... floating around… I felt it while scrolling Reddit after Figma Make was announced 😬 For some people it simply didn’t compute that a code prototype could be a design artifact. But I’ll let you in on a little secret… A few days ago I visited a well-known design leader and he said that in the last 6 months, ~40% of their team's design artifacts are now created in Lovable, Bolt, etc. That’s kind of crazy, right? It's a big reason why Ioana Teleanu (1st AI designer at Miro) said design is "in the middle of an identity crisis" So Ioana and I went deep into this topic during today's episode and I want to share a few ideas I’m still thinking about: ——— We’re in a weird moment in history where there are AI designers and non-AI designers. But this is a blip on the timeline as adoption accelerates. The idea of "AI designer" won't exist in the future Here's what Ioana said 👇 “We’re all gonna be thinking about some sort of AI angle in the way we do our work. I don’t even feel that the AI design role will exist in this explicit format in a couple of years. All the designers will be AI designers” I want to make something clear though... Now is the best time for founders and brands... to take advantage of this AI bubble to actually stand out from their competitors. First thing that potential customer see is your product video/demo, and If I wanted to buy your product, and the presentation you show me looks crap, I will get an impression you cheaped out on the product as well and just pass. A lot of founders/brands sadly fall for that, especially now with AI hype promising fast and cheap content. Just be honest, if you are a potential customer - would you be converted by AI slop, or videos like ones below, that were fundamentally and manually structured and animated to a T for conversion ?show more

I gave the new Meta Muse Spark model a... bunch of assorted assets and it was able to carefully extract them and place it into a functioning app. I've never seen something with a clear intuition for design and product-first thinking. This is the first AI that *gets* UI design.show more

Let's talk about agentic product design. Every company has... its own design process. What has always worked for me is spending long studio hours with our product team, dissecting things into pieces and putting them back together. In those sessions we look at value, usability, simplicity, aesthetics, behavior, storytelling, generics, and emotional mapping. I've been crafting products this way for as long as I can remember. Product work at Lemonade isn't for the faint of heart. This obsession over every detail is hard work, but I believe it yields better results and builds stronger talent. One of the things I love about our design and product team is how this process became a second nature to them. Feedback is fast, professional, and tension free. But in our latest session, something was different. One of our designers used Figma and Cursor to build a mockup that was so advanced, it was almost ready to be shipped. It was an incredible glimpse into a world where a single designer working on top of modern low code infrastructure will be able to launch production grade experiences for products with millions of customers, and with LoCo, I expect this to become a reality at Lemonade in just a few quarters. But there's a problem to watch out for. An interesting phenomenon I've noticed over the years is that the higher the fidelity of the work being reviewed, the more defensive people become. When someone shows up with something polished, they tend to resist feedback. They've already fallen in love with what they built, and it's hard for them to accept rejection. Radical candor feedback works best at an early stage of the project, before people get attached and feel the need to defend their work. This session was no exception. Because the work was so advanced, the review became binary, and its maker became defensive. Happily, we all caught ourselves in time to acknowledge this new dynamic and started figuring out how to go back to obsessing about every corner radius, shade of white, and word. When reviewing agentically coded designs, we'll try having our designers bring in more than one option, as well as the open Cursor project so we can make changes in real time if needed. The past year has seen me have a renaissance,... in the truest sense… I won’t go into details now but will at some point before long. What has brought so much happiness to my life and those around me this past year has been my falling back in love with sport. Cycling has, and always will be, my number one. Yet I’d forgotten that I simply love sport, not for results but for the sheer joy of doing it, I’d completely forgotten that the health of my mind is intrinsically connected to the health of my body. I’ve rediscovered the love I had for sport that existed before the world of professional cycling took over in the way it did. I’ve been pushing myself and trying new things this past year, indifferent to the results, just out having fun and at times going deeper than I thought I was capable of anymore. Last week I got on a TT bike for the first time in a decade, Factor Bikes built me a bike, I’ve been looking at it for two years and decided it was time to get fitted, getting back on it felt like going home. Anyway, the long and the short of this is that it’s inspired me to create a club to inspire and be inspired. A community for us to share our love for getting out there and doing it, because I’ve realized that although I spend most of my sporting life on my own I derive the most pleasure when feeling part of something. It’s in its early days, I’ve called it Sporting Club CHPT3 aka SCC3, I’d love you to check it out and join. It’s still in its infancy, but I hope it’s going to grow into something that will inspire you as much as me.show more

I know a lot of people hate on AI.... I get it. Be creative. But for those of use who can't draw or animate, this is more of a quick and cheap fix. and there's nothing wrong with that. I wish others were more open about sharing what they've learned using AI and not hoard their knowledge like it's worth gold. The only way we can learn and improve is if others share what they've learned. I understand people are protective of what prompts they use. Ok fine, don't share them. But you can't even give a tip? Like "add this phrase to the prompt for better [fill in the blank]" or "use [blank] for a more realistic atmosphere]. Just pisses me off. I'm happy to share all I've learned with anyone who askes.
