These do not factor how common a disease is (prevalence) Positive Predictive Value (probability a positive test reflects having a disease) factors in prevalence and is actually more important to clinicians than sens/spec. It is harder to figure out though because we need to have a gestault for how prevalent a disease is for the EXACT patient we are seeing. If you have very low prevalence, even with a great test, most positives are false positives. Let me explain Opossums (especially Virginia opossums) are highly resistant to pit viper venoms (rattlesnakes, copperheads, cottonmouths). The resistance comes from a protein in their blood serum called Lethal Toxin-Neutralizing Factor (LTNF). What the LTNF does is to first of all bind to the sites that the venoms are supposed to bind to, in order to have effect. Some parts of the LTNF also bind to some parts of the venom in order to make it inactive. Due to this, the opposum's body is able to bind and render venom toxins inactive before it does any damage. Since there's no damage, the opposum then goes for the snake's head and the rest in history. The small peptide that's responsible for the actions of LTNF is now being developed as a cheap, heat-stable antivenom alternative for human use.show more
