During an Israeli military operation last week the water... and sewage network in Nur Shams camp in the #WestBank were destroyed. UNRWA sanitation workers have stepped up to fix these systems, which are vital for the wellbeing of the 14,000 Palestine Refugees who live in the camp. As always, #UNRWAworks to fulfil the mandate given to us by the UN General Assembly - the international community - whatever the challenges. Our office in the camp was also bulldozed. The building, which was the hub of our work there, is now unusable and will have to be demolished. Indian Army Undertakes Swift Rescue Operations in Jammu Sector... Indian Army has launched extensive Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) operations in flood-affected areas of Jammu region, deploying multiple rescue columns and helicopters to evacuate stranded civilians, students, and security personnel. *Jammu Sector Operations* As on 26 August evening, four rescue columns were deployed at different locations in Jammu: •Garhi Garh, RS Pura Sector: Seven civilians, including one child, were rescued. African... wild dogs are critically endangered — fewer than 7,000 remain across all of Africa — and as part of our field work, we closely monitor local populations. MacArthur Park Update #5 Last night, DEALosAngeles and LAPD... HQ conducted a joint narcotics operation in the MacArthur Park area and it sent a clear message: drug dealers are not welcome in our communities. Six individuals were arrested on suspicion of narcotics sales. Federal and state laws were enforced. This is part of a sustained, coordinated effort to dismantle the open-air drug markets that have plagued Los Angeles for too long. I want to commend our federal agents and the men and women of LAPD for their professionalism and dedication. The people of Los Angeles deserve safe parks, safe streets, and safe neighborhoods. The wife of a fisherman who went missing at... sea wrote a devastating plea to her community in hopes of finding him. Deborah Billmaier's husband, Brandon, 33, and his uncle, Randall Spivey, 57, left for a bottom fishing trip from Fort Myers, Florida, on Friday morning. Billmaier expected her husband home by late afternoon the same day. But their empty boat has been recovered, and they are still nowhere to be found. During the three days they have been missing, she launched search efforts to bring her husband and his uncle back home. In her heartbreaking post, Billmaier begged loved ones to come together in prayer and in action. 'I am heartbroken posting this,' she wrote on Saturday. 'My husband Brandon went out fishing yesterday with his uncle off the coast of Fort Myers. They left early in the morning on Friday Dec 19th and were meant to come back that afternoon.'show more

The current blockages are purely political, and I am grateful to Germany for its support. The opening of clusters will certainly add momentum to progress across all areas of European integration and reforms. This should be the driving force for further joint work and coordination. I also shared the results of my visit to the Middle East and the system for protecting lives that Ukraine has offered to the countries of the region. Today, I hosted the first meeting of a special... panel on child safety online. For decades, we have made the real world safer for children and we must do the same in the digital world. The positive opportunities that technology offers cannot come at the cost of their safety, health or happiness. In Europe, tech platforms already have a responsibility to ensure the safety of users. But we must also do more to protect and empower our young people online. This is the aim of the special panel. We will work intensely with experts and stakeholders, including our youth, to forge a strong and realistic European approach to keep our children safe in the digital age. By the summer, the special panel will publish its recommendations for further action.show more

🌊😱 Central Texas hit by deadly flash flooding after... torrential rains Heavy rains have triggered severe flooding in Central Texas, leaving several people dead and others missing. Texas Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick confirmed that the dead include both adults and children. Some of the bodies were found inside vehicles that were swept away by the floodwaters. Among the missing are around 20 girls from a summer camp, ABC News reports. Earlier, the lieutenant governor suggested that some of the missing may have climbed trees to escape the water. Search efforts are being severely hampered by widespread power and internet outages. The region is no stranger to flooding, but this one was sudden and devastating. Footage from the scene shows cars being swept away, trees uprooted, and homes submerged as the Guadalupe River surged nearly eight meters in under an hour. Rescue operations are underway, involving helicopters, state police, the Texas National Guard, and the U.S. Coast Guard.show more

“One of the most complicated hostage rescue missions in... history.” The operation to rescue the hostages from Nusayrat was named "Summer Seeds" and is defined by the IDF as one of the most complex ever for hostage rescue. The hostages were held in a heavily civilian populated area, above ground, in buildings of 3-4 stories. The forces stormed the two separate targets where the hostages were held, with Noa held on the first floor and Andrey, Shlomi, and Almog on the third floor of another building, hundreds of meters apart. Hamas moved the four hostages from apartment to apartment, and the concern was that if the forces only stormed one building, the terrorists would escape with the hostages in the second building. The Air Force gathered intelligence from the air in the last few days, and the IDF and Shin Bet created conditions to reach the targets without the terrorists shooting the hostages first, which was key to the operation's success. The models built by the Yamam (Israel's counter-terrorism unit) reminded senior military officials of the models established for the Entebbe operation, with buildings, streets, and small areas for practice. The main problem was in the apartment where Andrey, Almog, and Shlomi were held, and where Yamam fighter Arnon Zamora was killed. The rescue took place under heavy fire, and during the disengagement, dozens of terrorists with RPGs and machine guns ran through the alleys towards the targets. As a result, uninvolved Gazan civilians were also killed in the dense fire exchange. The military said, "The difference between success and failure in such an operation is a hair's breadth, and we relied on exceptional technology from the Intelligence and Shin Bet. Without ground activity and maneuvering in the Gazan area, it would not have been possible to succeed in such operations." The IDF also noted that the rescue was made possible by Commander Zamora's heroism. "Shin Bet and Intelligence Directorate fighters entered the lion's den in the refugee camp and dismantled houses in areas where we hadn't maneuvered," they said. "This is bravery on the level of Judah Maccabee. The operation was planned for weeks with drills, rescue plans, and fires executed, alongside scenarios of cases and responses." The forces simultaneously broke into the two houses with special weapons developed for the operation. Immediately after extracting the hostages, the forces began to withdraw while fighting dozens of terrorists, but a vehicle with the three hostages got stuck and came under heavy fire. Division 98 forces jumped in to assist in the vehicle rescue battle, and rescue helicopters entered deep into the strip in daylight. Three brigades participated in the rescue battle, during which Zamora was also evacuated to the hospital: Brigade 7, Paratroopers, and Kfir with Flotilla 13, along with other special forces. "The fire plan that was executed was focused but extremely powerful," the IDF added. "The cooperation with Shin Bet and Yamam rose to several levels into a single operational system, under the direction of the Shin Bet chief and the Chief of Staff. Four keys to the operation: deception, surprise, determination, and power." To maintain the secrecy of the operation, thousands of soldiers in the brigades that participated in the rescue were unaware of the nature of the operation before it happened to preserve the element of surprise. Only a handful of commanders were exposed to the operation yesterday, at various levels. These forces were positioned at the correct launch points without revealing the secret.
