On June 24, 1947, Kenneth Arnold reported seeing nine... bright objects flying in formation while flying near Mount Rainier. He was the first pilot whose sighting became a worldwide media sensation, and his report led newspapers to coin the term "flying saucer." However, Arnold was not describing the UFOs as saucers. He was describing their motion, saying they moved "like a saucer skipping across water." He described the objects as thin and flat, crescent-shaped or half-moon-shaped.
