Wali Tangi, Quetta, witnessed an extremely unfortunate incident of... barbarism last night as a group of miscreants belonging to the BLA opened fire at a check post, resulting in the martyrdom of Subedar Qaiser Raheem. While the security forces managed to counter the terrorist attack and kill three terrorists, the fact that one innocent life was lost will remain a tragic memory. A few days ago, two mutilated dead bodies of... a Baloch couple, Hani Baloch and Sameer Baloch, were found in Iran-Shahaar, Sistan-Balochistan, Iran. While the Iranian authorities have apprehended six suspects, a debate was being circulated by the BNA that the Blaoch Liberation Front (BLF) was responsible for the abduction and subsequent killing of the couple. This brings forth a very important and crucial question before the general audience regarding the propaganda of enforced disappearances and missing persons: Is the state responsible for all kinds of abductions in the province? To answer this, I will draw your attention to David Galula, who in his book titled "Counterinsurgency Warfare: Theory and Practice," asserts that propaganda is a one-sided weapon in asymmetrical warfare; the insurgent can use it; the insurgent can cheat, lie, and exaggerate things if necessary because an insurgent is always judged by what he promises, not what he does". Building upon Galula, one can say that the insurgent groups and their mouthpieces like The Balochistan Post, Hakkal Media, and so-called human rights activists, etc. disseminate propaganda that wraps the half-cooked truth in many layers of lies and deceit and presents it before the world to gain sympathies and a tactical edge over the state. However, to counter the propaganda, the state, as Galula notes, presents its case by giving facts and figures. An example in this regard was the recent attack on the Pakistani military convoy in Gwadar, after which the insurgent groups claimed to have killed Chinese engineers, but the reality, as observed by the official statements of both Pakistan and China, was that no Chinese national was hurt in the attack. This shows how important and necessary it is for the state to disseminate actual information to nullify the effects of propaganda. Thus, applying Galula’s argument regarding propaganda to the context of enforced disappearances and missing persons, one can observe that Haani and Sameer Baloch’s tragic case is just one example of this broader pattern. Insurgent groups like the BLF often resort to falsehood and manipulation and use the plight of the actual victims to further their vile agendas. This way, these groups can garner international support on the one hand and become effective proxy tools for hostile states against Pakistan on the other. Preventing me from addressing congregational religious occasions as the Mirwaiz, to punish me for my political outlook and for raising social and religious concerns of people, while a reflection of the now familiar repressive mindset of rulers, is still unfortunate and shameful to say the least . There is a difference between peaceful Islam, radical extremism,... and political Islam. When people around the world repeatedly see terrorist organizations like ISIS, Al Qaeda, or the Muslim Brotherhood, among others, using religious language while slaughtering innocent people, fear spreads because evil is being falsely wrapped in faith. The problem is not Islam. The problem is radical extremist movements that hijack religion for power and violence. If we refuse to name that reality, extremists win twice: once through terror, and again by poisoning how an entire faith is perceived.
