Our Sun rapid-fire launched multiple #solarstorms today, but they... were so close together in time that they look as if they are one structure in coronagraphs. Here is a thread 🧵that discusses the event in detail. The first animation shows the past 48 hours on the Earth-facing Sun. Late on July 22, you can see a slight "puff" just to the east of Region 4150. This launches the first solar storm, destabilizes the area between Region 4149 and 4150, and sets the whole chain of events in motion. Next, early on July 23, the filament near center disk launches slowly. This is the main Earth-directed eruption, which was already unstable, but the first eruption pushed the filament past the tipping point. Then finally, by mid-afternoon on July 23, Region 4149 finally lets go of the remaining material connected to the filament. It is a three-part process that is deceptively complex.show more

The last 48 hours have been busy for the... Sun 💥 First is a plasma eruption from 4482 (left side) followed by a giant plasma filament launch just above. We see the large trans-equatorial coronal hole rotating to geoeffective position, and just below it a 2.7 C-flare from newly developed AR4485 creating a coronal shockwave and general plasma instability for the entire Earth-facing region (watch how the plasma disturbance shifts upwards to the plasma filament and to the left to AR4482). A giant canyon on the Sun On July 15,... a powerful flare occurred on the surface of the Sun, which briefly changed its structure and caused the release of hot plasma into space. As a result of this event, a plasma "scar" about 400,000 kilometers long appeared. This is approximately the distance from the Earth to the Moon. Here is a 3D visualization of the coming solar... storm using model parameters from NASA's run, NOAA's run (shown below), and the coronagraph views from STEREO-A/COR2 and SOHO/LASCO. The storm is expected to hit Earth early December 9. The 3D visualization clearly shows the low inclination orientation of the solar slinky core inside the larger storm envelope. Of course, the earlier eruption that erupted to the northeast, might deflect this structure a little bit, but likely that will only make the structure move more towards the ecliptic plane, which will give us a larger chance of crossing through the solar slinky core. One nice thing about low inclination flux rope cores is that they almost ALWAYS have southward field in them at some point. So this is good news for aurora photographers-- as long as this solar storm stays true to its launch trajectory and inclination, we could see some organized southward pointed magnetic field. Considering this solar storm is fast-- that usually indicates the storm will not deviate much from its original launch trajectory! Ukraine strikes the last oil refinery supplying Moscow and... the Moscow region On Thursday morning, Ukrainian drones attacked Yaroslavl. According to a video analyzed by OSINT experts, one of the drones exploded on the territory of a local oil refinery. The Yaroslavl oil refinery was the last of four major oil refining plants that supplied fuel to the capital region and continued to operate after previous Ukrainian drone attacks. The video shows a drone flying over the industrial zone of Yaroslavl and then diving before exploding on the territory of the Yaroslavl oil refinery. The oil refinery in Yaroslavl is the fifth largest oil refining facility in Russia. It can process 15.72 million tons of oil per year. This plant is one of three oil refineries (the other two are located in Ryazan and the Nizhny Novgorod region) that supply gasoline to the capital region via a pipeline, and all of them have already been targeted by attacks.show more

Early afternoon Lake Geneva and surrounding areas got hit... with significant straight line wind gusts! Units from around all of Southeastern Wisconsin were called to the city with a MABAS 5th alarm for the extensive amount of damage in town. Being that it is the Fourth of July weekend there were a large amount of tourists outside and on the lake as the storm rolled in. Therefore extensive rescue boats and sonar teams were requested as well to help in the efforts of saving boats and other water vessels that were affected. Reports have come in of missing persons on the water as the search is ongoing.
