One of the words the suspect reportedly shouted was “Baqqiyah,” which is commonly associated with the phrase used by Islamic State supporters, “Baqiya wa Tatamaddad” (“remaining and expanding”), a slogan frequently used in ISIS propaganda. Attacks like this rarely happen in a vacuum. They are often the result of radicalization that takes place online in extremist chat groups. The people running these networks are calculated—they know how to target young or impressionable individuals and slowly indoctrinate them until violence starts to seem justified. Unfortunately, both sides of the political spectrum sometimes play into the environment these extremists exploit.
