It’s true: You and your baby share a diet.... Babies are exposed to the flavors of the foods their mothers eat during pregnancy - which find their way into the womb via amniotic fluid, which babies are constantly ingesting and expelling. So if you want your baby to eat healthy, you’re well advised to do the same during pregnancy - allowing your child’s developing “flavor palate” to include the taste of vegetables (for example) even before they enter the world. One study suggested that consistent exposure to carrots while in utero made babies more likely to embrace the taste of cereal mixed with carrot juice later in infancy. Speaking of carrots, there’s even evidence that babies begin expressing their preference for certain flavors in the womb. On 3D ultrasound, babies in one study exhibited more “laughing faces” when exposed to carrot than they did when exposed to the taste of kale (which elicited more “crying faces”). I recorded this while flying over Beijing. Notice the... flashes? These are everywhere in China. They photograph every passing car, capturing the license plate, front of the vehicle, and the driver's face through the windshield. The bright white flash lights up the car's interior so the driver is clearly visible, even at night. They're used for security, catching wanted people or stolen vehicles, verifying the licensed driver, automatically detecting violations (no seatbelt, phone use, unlicensed driving), and matching faces against the national database for warrants. Looking for the perfect holiday gift for your baby?... How about a “face book?” I’ve written often about how much infants love the faces of their loved ones. Indeed, we’re biologically driven from birth to distinguish - and study - the faces that matter most. That’s because, as infants, the faces of our primary caregivers teach us lessons about everything from our safety to how language works. The brain has specific structures that help us to detect and distinguish between specific faces, including the fusiform face area, a part of the visual system specialized for this very task. I’ll have more to say about holiday gift giving soon (spoiler alert: for little ones, developmentally, less is more) but really love the idea of a baby friendly (soft) photo album - which offers not only a glimpse of their favorite sight, but a chance to see significant faces that they may or may not encounter each day (such as grandparents and other extended family). There are tons of them on the market. Look for something safe and soft.. and stock it only with duplicate photos you’ll be ok with sustaining the kind of wear and tear that babies are so skilled at providing.
