Yellow jackets, which usually nest underground and are often... disturbed by a lawn mower or chainsaw, are one of the most dangerous and aggressive insects around. (Haven’t done an Entomology post lately so figured I’d throw one on) Why are they so dangerous? Because they can rapidly and repeatedly sting. This is a video I took of one who had attacked a katydid. As you can see, even as the yellow jacket begins to feed on the katydid, he continues to rapidly “pop” the prey with his stinger, pumping the paralyzing venom into the katydid. I count around 10 full stings of the prey. When a person is stung by a yellow jacket the first time, it releases an “alert pheromone”, which signals to most of the other colony members that danger is present. A major swarm of yellow jackets will then proceed out of the nest and attack the person (or animal). It takes around 1500 stings to kill a grown adult and 300-400 to kill a child. These numbers are achieved quickly with 100-200 yellow jackets swarming. If a person is allergic, they can go into anaphylactic shock with just one sting. I’m all about “saving the bees” because of their pollination factor…but Yellowjackets are one species of insect that I would gladly eliminate because of their danger. If you see them flying around the ground, or a tree stump or some rail road ties in the landscape, avoid them at all costs.show more

the date? july 3rd. the place? east gigglegrub community... garden. the occasion? one of the coldest july days on record, a bone-quivering -18 degrees fahrenheit (about 246 degrees kelvin). with the freeze only hours away, local gardeners at gigglegrub's largest outdoor community garden rushed to protect their crops from impending doom... that is, until one hero goatnar stepped up to the challenge. standing valiantly besides a large industrial fan, our main character deftly executed the valsalva maneuver, skyrocketing his internal body temperature to a head-throbbing 1,000 degrees celsius (like 1800 degrees fahrenheit, i think? idk). thanks to his quick thinking and his special gift, almost all of the crops were saved. however, not everyone was so lucky. goatnar would eventually turn to a pile of ash, in large part due to the cellular damage inflicted by hours spent at such a high temperature. in addition, an elderly woman servicing the garden was vaporized when goatnar attempted to take a bite of her coat. This evening, Israeli residents set fire twice to the... perimeter of the UNRWA Headquarters in occupied East Jerusalem. This took place while UNRWA and other UN Agencies’ staff were on the compound. While there were no casualties among our staff, the fire caused extensive damage to the outdoor areas. The UNRWA headquarters has on its grounds a petrol and diesel station for the Agency’s fleet of cars. Our director with the help of other staff had to put out the fire themselves as it took the Israeli fire extinguishers and police a while before they turned up. A crowd accompanied by armed men were witnessed outside the compound chanting “Burn down the United Nations” (see video below 👇 from Israeli media). This is an outrageous development. Once again, the lives of UN staff were at a serious risk. In light of this second appalling incident in less than a week, I have taken the decision to close down our coumpound until proper security is restored. Over the past two months, Israeli extremists have been staging protests outside the UNRWA compound in Jerusalem, called by an elected member of the Jerusalem municipality. This week, the protest became violent when demonstrators threw stones at UN staff and at the buildings of the compound. Over the past months, UN staff have regularly been subjected to harassment and intimidation. Our compound has been seriously vandalized and damaged. On several occasions, Israeli extremists threatened our staff with guns. It is the responsibility of the State of Israel as an occupying power to ensure that United Nations personnel and facilities are protected at all times. UN staff, premises and operations should be protected at all times in line with international law. I call on all those who have influence to put an end to these attacks and hold all those responsible accountable. The perpetrators of these attacks must be investigated and those responsible must be held accountable. Anything less will set a new dangerous standard.show more

Hexagons and Octagons Those who follow football and coaching... will be well aware that there are trends that emerge and become the great break through in coaching, only to vanish quite quickly. A few stick around and become a staple. Such as the rondo, or the 4v4+4 Guardiola rondo variation. One that did not stick around in the coaching collective consciousness that possible should have was Thomas Tuchel’s use of hexagonal and octagonal playing areas in training sessions. Tuchel explained that cutting off the corners and angling the pitch forced “sharp diagonal” passes that would help break the press. The positioning of players outside the hexagon/octagon or players close to the edges will be manipulated into an open body shape by the angles of the pitch. Players are impacted by environmental constraints and embodied cognition, where the geography of the playing area influences their actions. This influence spreads to the creation of triangles and diamonds within the playing area due to the “funnel” like nature of the playing area. We can use the cut outside angles by placing bounce or target players on the exterior, influencing the movement and organisation internally. The inside players will not have to move wide as those areas are occupied. The internal players will seek to create passing angles using the positioning of the outside players and their internal team mates. The diamonds and triangles will appear. If we leave the spaces on the outside empty players can move to fill the spaces. These act as free spaces to receive from the goalkeeper or open spaces for attackers to overlap into, encouraging attacking combination play and crosses. A different way of using the space is to remove goals and goalkeepers from the ends and place bounce/target players on the outside. Players now can combine with the outside players, when they do so they are then free to finish into the outside goals. The condition can be extended to combining with the target player in the opposite side of the pitch before scoring, adding an element of switching play. The hexagon and octagon are versatile spaces that help to replicate aspects of the game. By funneling the spaces we impact players body shape, ability to play forward quickly, team shape (or small group shapes), players cutting in, defending centrally, the types of combination used and the angles of line breaking pass (diagonals). The angles are hugely significant for teams that value combinations and possession football, Straight passes and receiving angles are much easier to intercept and carry high risks for being counter attacked. Short diagonals can bypass players and attacking shapes, creating angled connections. If an angles pass is given away there is still a risk of being counter attacked but there is more chance of having players around the ball to regain possession. To counter press. The question that emerges is should we then be using hexagons and octagons more? If they are of greater benefit than squares and rectangles, why use them? Should all pitches, including those of a small sided nature be hexagonal? Can the rondo square be replaced by the rondo octagon?show more

The strangest oil trade of 2026 isn't happening at... sea. It's 700 tanker trucks a day crossing the Iraq–Syria desert. The biggest winner is a government that barely produces oil at all. Hormuz shut → Iraq lost 90% of export revenue. Baghdad will take ANY outlet. So 2 land corridors opened: al-Waleed in Anbar (31 March) and Rabia/Yarubiyah (20 April) the latter sealed since 2013. Destination: Baniyas, Syria's Mediterranean port. Then by sea to Europe. The numbers are medieval and massive at once: 500–700 trucks/day, 30 tonnes each. Baniyas unloading capacity up 30%, 120k bpd flowing. Baseline 150k bpd, target 350k. Moving just 50k bpd of crude takes 1,000 trucks running nonstop, this is a pipeline made of wheels. 💰The economics Here's the desperation premium: SOMO is paying $20–22 per barrel to move fuel oil by land. By sea it costs cents. Iraq signed for 650k tonnes/month anyway because the alternative isn't a cheaper route.... It's zero. Damascus collects on every barrel: transit fees, storage, port charges, plus cheap Iraqi fuel. At $2–3/bbl that's $8–13M/month, rising to $21–30M at full flow. For al-Sharaa's empty treasury, possibly his most reliable hard-currency stream. The worse Iraq's crisis gets, the more Syria earns. The structural irony is that Iran shut Hormuz to punish its enemies. Result, Iraqi oil money now flows to a Damascus government Tehran calls an adversary while Iraq, Iran's closest Arab partner, sits on life support. NEW WORLD MODEL: Yann LeCun's team is back with... an efficient model! This project involves Yann LeCun, Lukas Kuhn, Lucas Maes, Quentin Le Lidec, and Randall Balestriero. A couple definitions first: - DINO: self-DIstillation with NO labels. A self-supervised image model (Meta, 2021) where a student network learns to match a teacher (an EMA copy of itself) across two crops of the same image, with no labels and no negatives. - SIGReg: a regularizer that prevents embedding collapse by forcing the embeddings to match an isotropic Gaussian, tested with a normality test (Epps–Pulley) on many random 1-D projections instead of in full dimension. LeVJEPA is a self-supervised video pretraining method, released with open code, weights, and checkpoints. It learns a video representation by pushing the embeddings of global and local crops of the same clip together (an invariance loss), while a regularizer called SIGReg forces the embeddings toward an isotropic Gaussian to provably prevent representation collapse. Unlike V-JEPA and V-JEPA 2 it uses a single shared encoder with a projector and no target network, no predictor and no stop-gradient. It drops 95% of tokens per view, uses block-causal attention (each frame attends only to past frames), and has a single loss weight. It is evaluated purely as a representation learner via frozen probing on ImageNet-1K, Something-Something-v2 and Kinetics-400, not on any robot. What I find interesting, is that V-JEPA and V-JEPA 2 need an EMA target encoder, stop-gradients and a capacity-limited predictor to avoid collapse; LeVJEPA drops all of it for one shared encoder plus projector, preventing collapse instead with the SIGReg regularizer under a provable guarantee and a single hyperparameter. The "P" (predictor) in JEPA is effectively gone. LeVJEPA is also less compute intensive: - 5.6x to 20.8x lower total pretraining compute than V-JEPA 2 - 7.6 points higher on ImageNet-1K at matched FLOPs - trains at batch size 128 within 8GB where V-JEPA 2 saturates at batch size 28 Also worth mentioning: ImageNet-1K accuracy rises monotonically with the token-drop rate, from 33.9% at rho = 0 to 47.6% at rho = 0.95. The aggressive dropping is actually doing regularization work. On the JEPA-versus-DINO debate: - it loses to DINOv2 by 3.1 points on ImageNet-1K (appearance, static) - but wins on Something-Something-v2 by nearly 2x (motion, temporal) - and beats V-JEPA 2 by 1.9 points on ViT-L at 5.6x lower cost. -> optimized for temporal and motion understanding per compute dollar.show more
