He hurled hand grenade for hand grenade, bayoneted two fanatical Germans who rushed a doorway he was defending, and fought on with the enemy's weapons when his own ammunition was expended. The savage fight raged for four hours, and finally, when only three men of the defending squad were left unwounded, the enemy surrendered. As young children grow into language, they must develop basic vocabulary before mastering the more nuanced meanings of our figures of speech. So if you ask your toddler “what’s up,” they will - for a time - be more likely to check out the ceiling than to explain what they’ve been doing. Asked what’s in his hand, this little one has a perfectly reasonable reaction: if there is something IN my hand it must be very small… and to see it I’m going to need to move this giant golf club out of the way. 😀 Note that when dad tweaks his question ever so slightly, asking what he is “holding,” our hero answers the question without any problem.
