Angie….Wow. This has taken me a couple of days... to digest. I had the pleasure of knowing this queen since the very beginning of my true musical journey. I was looking for a background singer and sax player for my first club tour and she walked into my life at an audition. I instantly knew that I was in the presence of greatness. We did a tour together and became family. Being from down south (as we called it) she reminded me of my grandmother and her people who were from a small town in Georgia. We bonded over music, humour, and southern cuisine which she cooked with great joy. She knew her food tasted better than everyone else’s and it did. She had a phrase that I loved, "Lenny, I am overly confident". She believed it and so did I. She went on to become Angie Stone and changed the face of music as a solo artist, becoming known as the queen of neo soul. She already had an illustrious past but this was now HER time. As a black woman who was told she was not the right age, not the right look, etc she busted through and never looked back. The rest is history. Writer, producer, arranger, musician and master vocalist. The best of the best. I got to play on some of those great recordings and they are treasures in my mind and spirit. Throughout the process, I carried an overwhelming amount of... grief for Grace. To find her emotional truth, I couldn’t begin with the cold composed woman you all saw. I had to begin with the 6 years old child.She had to completely unravel crying screaming and breaking apart before I could slowly bring her back down into Dynamic 1 which is the functional mask she wears every day. Underneath that mask, the little girl never left. She is still trapped in that morning. Still hearing the gunshot. Still watching her mother die before her very eyes. Still reaching for someone she could never save. Every glance came from that little girl…frozen in time When Grace pushes Henri’s body away…is it really Henri she’s pushing away? Or is she pushing away the pain that has haunted her for her entire life? When she tells Lom that love is stupid…is she really speaking to Lom? Henri? Or is she speaking across time to her mother and to that little girl who never understood why love had to cost so much? In her final moments, as her mother’s face flashed before her eyes, she realized she wasn’t so different from her mother after all. This is why I felt so out of it.... 10 years today. I take solace in the fact that my mother loved us well and did her best for us. She was a fighter, protector and provider. She endured harassment by the SAP in the Apartheid era to keep us safe. She was the keeper of secrets, my secrets in particular. She loved all of us equally and never spoke a bad word about one of my siblings to me. She endured the loss of a child with dignity and later in life would be the matriarch of the family. Keeping us together when it seems we were drifting apart. Whoever came to visit, never left empty handed. I remember Geraldine and Jasper , adopted kids that she fed and nurtured through their formative years. She was there at my lowest points in life and never failed to support me.. She could cook up a storm in the kitchen and sew dresses for us and if Matthew Duiker would allow it she would make him an underpants. The death of my brother almost destroyed her, but again she rose from the ashes to keep the home fires burning during the most terrible times her life. Idk if you realize it guys but im pretty... sure Freen actually spent more money on this concert than she earned ! ... I felt like she really did this concert for her fans, relatives and closes friends . She really wanted to celebrate her birthday with all of us and this is just my opinion but her concert was worth twice the price she charged, and that's just incredible.
