Slow Progress is the New Reality of Modern Wars... There are many people commenting on Russian difficulties and coming up with numerous reasons for their alleged collapse. I absolutely do not see any collapse; on the contrary, Russia has already normalized a state of war in Ukraine, which boosts its economic and industrial growth. The difficulties faced by Russia today are the same as at the beginning of the war, with soldiers having to spend up to half of their initial salaries on their own equipment, delays in pensions, and a series of other problems that are mirrored on the Ukrainian side, even with all the support from allies. The war today is much less lethal than it was months ago, and both Russian and Ukrainian losses have significantly decreased during this phase. Lethality has fallen, but Russian advances persist. And why are they slow? Is it a Ukrainian tactic? No. They are slow because they are accompanied by the deployment of communication infrastructure like signal repeaters for drones, the advancement of artillery guided by drones, maneuvers using FAB and more recently ODAB bombs against Ukrainian drone operators' facilities, infiltration by reconnaissance teams, saboteurs, and a series of protocols they have developed. That conventional war with rapid advances no longer exists, and in the context of a battlefield dominated by drones, it is unlikely to return. Modern wars will have slow progress, as seen in the attacks and counter-attacks of the Russians and Ukrainians in this war. Contemporary military forces are still unable to see this new reality of war. When analyzing the Russian advance, it's important to consider that all these maneuvers take days to unfold, but the point is that the Russians have already adapted to this pace, not bothered whether a particular advance will take 3 weeks or 3 months. They advance continuously following tactical protocols with little threat from Ukrainian forces, which, without new equipment, have had their defensive tactics remain almost unchanged over the past two years, relying mainly on drones and making it easier for Russian studies of countermeasures. And what can Ukraine do in this situation? I see few options, but one would be to delay the Russian advance with a good number of missiles, though personally, I find it unlikely that they will reach Ukrainian hands. It wouldn't have the power to change the balance of the war, but it would guarantee more time, which is important because the battlefield is dynamic, and the implementation of new tactics based on innovative weapons can change everything overnight. The right leaning mainstream media want him to believe it because their biggest donors are very pro war in Iran. The neocons surrounding him want him to believe it because then they can have the war in the Middle East they have always pushed for. I do not think President Trump is playing 4D chess with this war. I do not think he is super pro war. I do not think he cares about the Middle East that much. I just think he is being manipulated by the people around him and he does not realize it. We have now been informed that a naval drone—which... is NOT Ukrainian (according to the Minister of Defense)—loaded with explosives was destroyed 80-100 meters from the Neptun Deep platform. F-16 were used to destroy it, firing their onboard cannons (the cannon is a 6-barrel rotary machine gun, kind of like the one on the Predator that Schwarzenegger used in the forest—only more powerful). Given that it was 80–100 meters away and wasn’t engaged by anyone on the platform or in the surrounding area, this concerns me. Back in 2023, I wrote about a secret everyone knew: Neptun Deep project is located within the exclusive economic zone (EEZ), so it’s in our part of the Black Sea, but it is NOT protected by NATO. This exclusive zone borders Ukraine to the north and northeast. Except that the northeastern part is de facto controlled by russia, as it is the EEZ of the Crimean Peninsula. Neptun Deep is focused on gas extraction and transforming Romania into the largest producer and exporter of gas in the European Union. Who do you think is most economically affected by this? You guessed it: russia. Because gas will be extracted from the Pelican block for at least the next 20 years. Do you think we no longer need gas? We do—for example, for massive AI data centers, which are energy-intensive. Neptun Deep is such a strategic and beneficial project for Romania—and so detrimental to russia—that as early as 2023, I, a simple man with some wartime experience, predicted that the russians would target Neptun Deep. AI has had exactly two scaling axes that worked... so far, and the second one is starting to look finite too the first one was pretraining: with scaling parameters and data, we got world knowledge (i.e. ChatGPT had read enough to know things), but it started saturating a while ago the second one was RL, and people had been doing RL the whole time before that: RLHF is RL but it never scaled far because it was trying to control the exact output, which tokens come out, how the text reads, but you can only push that so far before you’re just polishing RLVR dropped that constraint: giving the model a task, then checking whether the final answer is right, and ignoring everything in between -- so the model does whatever it wants in the middle and only the endpoint gets graded, and that’s much closer to actual RL and it’s what bought us planning and reasoning (arguably, tool use sits around 2.5 on this list -- while useful, it's not a different kind of thing) so one axis gave knowledge, the other gave reasoning, and both of them are one model working alone the next axis is how many models you can get working on the same problem, which is a different kind of axis than the previous two we know that multi-agent RL has always been the harder problem: I spent years in that literature and the gap between single-agent and multi-agent is definitely not incremental -- it’s a whole different class of difficulty! which is also why the derivatives are steep at the start, nobody has picked the easy wins yet... and the thing that gates this multi-agent coordination is communication: models can only coordinate as well as they can exchange information, and right now they do that by writing sentences to each other imagine what could we possibly achieve if we properly open that third axis development by letting models to exchange information in their native "language" without loosing any computational data that they produce during inferenceshow more
