Interesting video from Kpler via the CNBC story below.... It shows the shipping activity in the Persian Gulf today. After it was announced that the Strait was open, dozens of ships turned on their AIS (GPS) and sailed to the Strait. Then they abruptly stopped, U-turned, and turned off their AIS. In the end, the traffic that went through was no different than any other day of the war. Shippers are still thinking it is closed. Sal Mercogliano (WGOW Shipping) 🚢⚓🐪🚒🏴‍☠️ John Ʌ Konrad Vshow more

BREAKING: The Philippine Coast Guard confirms that the Chinese... research vessel JIA HAI KE 7 has entered the Philippine exclusive economic zone (EEZ). A Filipino plane spotted the vessel 38 nautical miles off Itbayat, challenging it multiple times over radio and demanding that it state its intentions and cease any unauthorized activity. The Chinese didn’t respond. The Philippines have announced that the Chinese’s vessels behavior is not that of a ship in innocent passage. Rather than steaming on a steady course and speed, it has been loitering and holding position in the same area — the movement pattern of a vessel conducting marine scientific research (MSR), not transit. The Philippines also say that the vessel is engaging in deliberate AIS spoofing to conceal the vessel's true movements from the authorities in Manila. Under SOLAS, vessels must transmit accurate AIS data at all times; falsifying position data, combined with silence on the radio, points to a vessel that does not want its activity known. The vessel is the only Chinese private vessel with the technology to hold station precisely over a fixed point on the seabed for marine geological survey. Its current loitering pattern off Itbayat is consistent with exactly this kind of operation. The waters off Batanes and the Luzon Strait host critical submarine cable corridors linking the Philippines to Northeast Asia and the wider Indo-Pacific. Are the Chinese preparering for similar sabotage actions against submarine cables like the ones Russia has carried out in the Baltic Sea over the past years? Video via Jay Tarrielashow more

Need some input on the DRIVE METER for Task... Manager "OG", or TMOG. Right now I'm drawing instantaneous drive activity at 60fps. But that's pretty "flickery". Any ideas how how to give you that old school "disk light" feeling? I'll add some rapid decay instead of just "changing" to the new number, especially when it's 0.show more

How do you monitor wildlife in places where infrastructure... is limited? Some of the world's most valuable biodiversity data comes from remote, hard-to-reach locations, where researchers can't rely on traditional connectivity or computing. This is what the Open Science Conservation Fund is working to solve with Trapper, an open source platform that helps researchers analyze camera trap data closer to where it's collected. This demo, running on Ubuntu and Canonical Kubernetes, uses NextComputing’s fly-away kit - a portable edge computing system that can be carried into remote locations and deployed wherever it's needed, making it easier to turn observations into knowledge that the global scientific community can build on. #OpenSource #Ubuntu #Kubernetesshow more

Russian sources report that the attack on Moscow continues.... Ukraine’s response to the recent atrocity Russia perpetrated in Kyiv involves (per current Russian counts) 250 drones, along with some jet powered ones. The last 24 hours in the Strait of Hormuz... are a doozy. At the start of the clip, you will see many of the vessels that were going through the Oman route take the Iran route instead. Now there's something I should probably point out. In the last week or so, US escorts through the Oman lane typically saw VLCCs transit out; that was not the case this time. In addition, US transits typically show a cluster of ships moving together, which was not the case here either. Basically, I'm just saying it doesn't look like a typical US escort. But it was also interesting that some of the vessels were able to leave right away via the Iran route, while others turned back. I'm not entirely sure what's going on. Visible AIS data-wise, there were no other escorts that took place. Inbound VLCCs were zero today for the first time since the MOU was signed. I will need to check the satellite data tomorrow, but I'm sure some went in; we just don't know right now. What's clear, however, is that the Oman route will be heavily contested in the coming days. Any assumption of normality in the Strait of Hormuz is wishful thinking. Here is the video from MarineTraffic and I've included the table of inbound tankers.show more

Study: TerraUSD Crash Caused by Coordinated Trading Attack Researchers... have found new evidence that the $3.5 billion TerraUSD and $LUNA crash in 2022 was likely caused by a coordinated trading attack. Instead of normal market activity spread across many traders, just a few controlled nearly all trading right before the collapse. This pattern suggests a planned effort to crash the system. The team used a method called temporal multilayer graph analysis to study trading behavior on Ethereum. Their data showed that five or six traders acted in sync, each holding almost the same market share — too precise to be random. They developed the tool with Pometry, a spin-out from Queen Mary University of London. The study was published in ACM Transactions on the Web by Cheick Tidiane Ba, Ben Steer, Matteo Zignani and Richard Clegg.show more

Strait of Hormuz over the last 24 hours: Escalation... continues. The US and Iran continue to bomb each other, but no tankers have been attacked, at least not any that have been publicly reported. Mainstream media in the past 48 hours really started to pick up on the notion that the oil shuttling service through the Oman lane is slowing down. Based on satellite data, it is not completely dead yet, but how much are the shipowners willing to risk it? Well, they are having a hard time getting crew members to agree, and a few have already reported that the captains have refused transit. In the meantime, the Iran lane is getting all the traffic with AIS turned on. No visible tanker transits through the Oman lane, as expected. I have included the video from MarineTraffic.show more
