As the sport continues to compress, that might be worth a couple wins a year - Gunner’s ability to influence second/third level defenders off RPO/rollout/play-action looks when UGA gets the run going is really good. Officially moving on from Tech game after I get... this thought off my chest. I more than welcome anyone smarter than me in regards to the football to chime in. I truly, truly, truly cannot wrap my head around the thought process here. These two plays I'm sure anyone with brain can agree officially sealed KU's slim chances in having a chance to win this game. The play calling to me seems like completely flipped in logic at best? First one, you are down 4, on your own 30 so you are not going to go for this. Ignoring that we were getting dominated in the trenches in this game and that the 'obvious' play is a run, I don't get why we make the decision in a must get spot to take the ball out of our QB's (who at the time was rolling) hands. Jalon Daniels is our best player. In an absolute must get/need, we should be relying on him to make a play. Then the second one. I obviously don't know the answer here, but I feel somewhat confident that the reason we didn't run here was because of how the earlier 3rd & 1 run went. While I don't necessarily agree with the premise of decision making on this alone, I can appreciate the recognition that we are going to struggle to gain a yard in an obvious run situation. But the thing is, we are in go for it range so the one thing you absolutely cannot have is a massive negative play. Literally anything else is okay (obviously not a turnover). I truly don't think there's a good chance we run the ball on this attempt and get a yard. But THIS situation gives you a free shot at it if you want to take it. I think this play call would have worked if we didn't let their best player run at our qb freely but I'd just argue this play had a ton of potential risk that wasn't necessary. Hell even a play action pass out of out shot gun or something rolling JD out to the left would have given us a good shot at first down with an escape route to bail out on the play if something went wrong. I'm once again for the millionth time saying I know and understand that this entire staff knows more about football in their pinky than I do. But I do think the game has evolved and game + clock management doesn't really require football knowledge/have a direct correlation to one's football knowledge. It's not as simple as ESPN's graphic says GO so you should go etc, there are variables and human behavior etc to deal with and I understand that. But we are just getting these situations downright wrong. We are flipping a coin that has a 20 pound weight attached to the heads side and calling tails almost every single time. On the second day of recruiting myths… Myth #2:... “The name on the front of your jersey doesn’t matter.” There is some truth here. But people usually say this to make you feel better if you’re not on a team in the “recruiting bubble.” And yes of course there are always outliers. If you’re Montana Fouts, you could show up playing for the Butterflies and coaches would still be lined up drooling at the fence. But for most of us? The jersey does matter. Especially if you don’t have true 5-star size or can’t blow people away with elite metrics. I know this because I’ve been on both sides of it. Same player. Same work ethic. Completely different response from coaches. Why does the jersey matter more than people admit? First impressions. If a coach doesn’t recognize your club as one that consistently produces players at their level, you have to overwhelm them with performance and numbers just to get the same look. What matters even more than the jersey name is the coach attached to it. My last club, Rising, was brand new. But my coach, Steve Appel, had a lot of successful former players at top 25 programs. Coaches knew him. Trusted him. We were at the best fields and no one cared what was on the front of our jerseys. At my first tournament with that team, I saw more college coaches than I had in my entire recruiting journey before that. It’s true. College coaches aren’t recruiting a jersey. They’re recruiting you. But your jersey affects: •what fields you play on •who stops to watch •how risky you look on paper A well-known club with proven coaches comes with built-in credibility. Can you get recruited without that? Yes. I did. But if you’ve read my book, you know how many things had to line up for that to happen. So is there truth to this myth? Yes. But most of the time, when people say it, they’re trying to protect you from a harder truth: Recruiting isn’t just about how good you are. It’s also about who’s willing to vouch for you. ‡ Judging Firm Ground Turf Action Friday's 8th race... is the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf. I've chosen this race not because it will necessarily present a good betting opportunity, but rather a good illustration of how I go about predicting whether horses which haven't yet raced on firm turf are likely to handle it well. In the U.S., handicappers typically look through the lens from the other side, meaning that as the vast majority of turf races are contested over firm (or hard) courses, predicting which horses may handle the odd soft ground race is the challenge. But when horses travel from Europe to the U.S., relatively few have shown form over anything like the firm ground typically found in the States, and not all of them adapt equally well. There are four European runners in the race. Balantina was beaten just a nose in a Group III race in France over a course rated firm, and her action appears consistent with a horse that should handle even firmer going. Precise, the 6/5 program favorite, has also won over relatively firm surfaces, and shows a good action. She'll need to overcome a very bad draw, but is clearly the best horse in the race on form. This brings us to the two fillies that I'll use to illustrate contrasting action. Broadly speaking, horses that are well-suited to firm surfaces show a fluid, lower-to-the-ground action, while those which often prove best on softer surfaces display a rounder, or what is sometimes referred to as "knee" action. Pacific Mission has run only three times. Her two races on turf were contested over ground that was much softer than what she will face at Del Mar. But her third race was at Kempton, over an all-weather surface, and the attached clip (below, on the left), was taken from that race. She is the one in front, with the rider wearing the iconic pink, white and green Juddmonte silks. As you should be able to see, Pacific Mission shows a good, fluid action, which implies that she is likely to adapt well to the Del Mar turf. Whether she, and her rider, Colin Keane, will be able to overcome the 12 post, and prove good enough to win or place, are different matters. Queen of Hawaii, trained by Aidan O'Brien's son Joseph, will break from post 2. She also has three starts to date, but unlike Pacific Mission, has yet to race over anything like firm ground. While all three of her races were over ground rated "good", that rating in Ireland is typically, I would say, equivalent to what would be labeled a "yielding" course in the U.S. That each of her last two races, both over a mile, were run no faster than 1:41 4/5, helps to illustrate the point. Note how she picks up her knees, as that it the type of action that is more often associated with horses that prefer give in the ground. To be clear, some horse that display such action do "act" on firmer surfaces, as well, and presumably her trainer is optimistic that Queen of Hawaii will adapt. But the contrast between her action, and that of Pacific Mission, provides a good illustration of the basic differences. And setting aside all other handicapping variables, horses with fluid action are more likely to excel over firm surfaces than those with a pronounced knee action.show more
