TikTok1, I want you to know that, this morning... I received messages and calls from neighbours in Westlands, where I own a property, about flooding inside the compound. ( That Mvua Mdogo, you said ) In all the years since these houses were built in the early 80s, they have stood firm and never suffered such damage. They were built to last, and they have lasted, until now. The unplanned high-rises have been springing up all around our property for the past couple of years. Construction is happening beacon to beacon, without proper infrastructure, drainage, or consideration for existing homes. This reckless building is choking the systems that once worked, and now homes that survived four decades of Nairobi weather are being flooded. The video shared by a neighbour speaks for itself. Houses are flooded, tenants are distressed, and I now face a tenant who was meant to move in this month asking questions about safety. Who will compensate us? Not a dick measuring contest. Just a difference of... incentives. Trump Tower was built privately. Private capital has to earn its keep and people actually have to choose to stay there, buy a condo, or lease space. Bad design or function gets punished fast with empty rooms, lost revenue, and real pain for the builder. That’s why you get something tall, useful, and still valuable decades later. The Obama library is a legacy project with roughly the same money. Foundations, donors, and public land perks funded it. The people writing the big checks aren’t the daily users, and there’s no monthly rent test forcing constant improvement. And the result is a lot of “iconic”, whatever that means, and not much everyday value. The day before I left, my team decided to make a mock physical magazine with him on the cover. That was fun to deliver. Graham trusted us to do two things we’d never done before (write a profile, and make a magazine). He was so patient and kind to us all. - everyone (I mean, everyone) told us this was a stupid idea. “A…magazine?!” The best opportunities seem like bad ideas but are good ideas. Seemingly bad ideas have very little competition. It seemed bad because most magazines are dead or dying. But it was good because people are craving things which are detailed and hard to make as we enter the slop era of content. Now we are wondering “what’s even harder to make?” - obsession is the most important attribute of a good story for Colossus: a writer obsessed with a subject, writing about a subject who is obsessed with something else. After 3 incredible years and 1.6M students later, my... journey at ALX Africa has come to an end. It has been a life-changing experience, during which I made a lot of friends, worked with an incredibly dedicated team, and met so many talented students. A few numbers. We scaled from a few thousand students to 1.6M students on our platform. Students loved it and many of them took more than one course: 4M total! For the famous #ALX_SE Software engineering program, our SE students made an average of 2,000 commits and our checker reviewed 180M of their projects. That’s 2B lines of code… and that was before Claude Code. They actually wrote these themselves (unless Kimba said otherwise :) A big thank you to all my SE team mates, I am so proud of what we have accomplished, and I will really miss you all. Thank you to Fred for the trust he put in me and always supporting my crazy new and disruptive ideas. Thank you to my students. What’s Behind the Trees I run local trails and... dirt paths to explore. I don’t hit a pace target at my age anymore…not that there’s anything wrong with that. Remember. I’m training for life. But I love to explore new areas. I leave time to get lost and to find out what’s actually out there. The result has been a strange and consistent surprise — some of the most beautiful places I’ve ever seen are actually within a few miles of my house. Quiet creek crossings, ridgelines with views, and an amazing dam and waterfall (see below) I didn’t know existed. There’s a road I travel often only 100’ from the dam, yet you can’t see it and I’d driven past it for years without ever knowing what sat behind the trees. Although… my propensity to get lost on trails did get me in trouble in Costa Rica 😮‍💨…. And almost shot in rural Colorado. 😫 I would never have found any of it from the road. I found it because I was moving slowly enough to notice and far enough from any trailhead to be somewhere many people don’t go. There’s a lesson in this that applies well beyond running. The interesting stuff is almost never on the main path. It’s a quarter mile off the obvious route, down a trail nobody told you about. You have to be willing to be a little lost, a little uncertain about where the loop closes, a little later getting home than you planned. Endurance training gives you the engine to do that. An hour or two of easy aerobic work isn’t a sacrifice… it’s the mechanism... It’s what lets you wander far enough from the car to find the place worth finding. Go explore where you live (Except for a certain trail in Costa Rica and some rural roads in Colorado). You don’t know it as well as you think you do.show more

I honestly don’t understand why people call this "brotherly... play" or "something cute" and even find it a subject for jokes and humor. During today’s Weverse live, there was a moment when Jin pushed Jungkook upside down. It looked dangerous. Not funny, not touching, but genuinely risky for his health. He could have seriously injured his neck. Let’s be real, if he had actually gotten hurt, no one would be calling it "feelings" or "bonding". This is not about infantilizing Jungkook . He is an adult, strong and capable. But adults can get injured too, especially when a movement is sudden and unexpected. Closeness and friendship do not remove the risk. Close relationships ≠ no boundaries. A joke ≠ safety. What made it even worse was the reaction immediately afterward, comments praising physical strength and joking about furniture, as if nothing serious had just happened. That kind of response doesn’t make the moment lighter, it makes it feel even more unsettling. You can love and support them while still admitting that some moments cross a line or are simply unsafe. Critical thinking is not hate. What bothers me the most is how any concern is instantly dismissed with phrases like "it’s normal", "you’re overreacting" or "they’re family". Caring is not overreacting. Caring means not ignoring potential danger. I have no words. I really didn’t want to start the New Year with negativity, but this situation was something else. I literally screamed when I saw that moment, it was completely unexpected. And you know what? You say that there’s something wrong with us - that we don’t understand jokes, games, or that we don’t have friends… But the truth is, the fact that you find this normal and funny says that something is wrong with you, not us. I hope Jungkook is always safe, and I hope that adults will finally reconsider their behavior - behavior that either puts him in uncomfortable situations or could one day seriously harm someone’s health.show more
