This is gonna be so long omg but when... it comes to translating in Korean, it’s very very important to take in consideration of 1) Culture 2) Seniority, the Closeness & Intimacy of the people involved in a conversation. Because this gives an entire different vibe for the context. And we have to keep in mind that there are Korean phrases and expressions that simply don’t have just One way, exact words that can be translated in English. Translators can find ways to convey the meaning, but it requires more explanation and understanding of the context while conveying it, and not relying on assumptions. How about “인상 덜 쓰기” or “인상 쓰다“ then? Here, a direct translation can simply be 인상 덜 쓰기 - be less grumpy/ frown less, etc 인상 쓰다 - being grumpy, frown, make a face, etc Here, I include an educational video of an English speaker talking with a Korean speaker where they’re discussing a similar expression, “인상 좀 쓰지마!“ (which in word by word in English, it sounds something like “Don’t frown/ Don’t make a face”) Now, as an English speaker, that sounds a bit harsh doesn’t it? That’s because such expression doesn’t exist in just One interpretation in English, so if we only read it as it is, without considering the context and the speakers’ closeness, we’re bound to misunderstand the context. Quoting some parts of this video, 💚: “Now, Tyler’s expression for today is ‘인상 좀 쓰지마!’. Have you ever heard of this expression? 🩶: I’ve heard something like that before 💚: Then doesn’t this mean there’s a same expression in English too right? 🩶: Oh! I’ve only heard it in Korea 💚: Ah really? The guy then explained that if you say something like this in english, it can be rude. so it’s better not to say it in English-speaking countries. He gave examples like “If you do that, you’ll get wrinkles”, and the other guy added something like “If you make an ugly face, you’ll have wrinkles” and said that “If someone (an English speaker) hears this they would think I must be crazy” Here, they’re talking about the cultural differences. A phrase like this, when expressed directly, without considering people’s closeness, and being translated exactly like that, would sound so negative to English speakers. *also notice how this phrase is being worded in various ways??? ‘HOW’ it can sound to someone, really depends on their culture, their closeness with the person, and context* So later on, he gave a few more examples like, “stop making such a long face”, and “stop wrinkling your forehead”. And concluded that: 💚: Well in that case, the phrase “인상 좀 쓰지마” is basically a phrase that doesn’t exist in English. 🩶: It’s an expression that we don’t use. It’s not that it doesn’t exist. (This part, he’s explaining that there’s no such a thing as word by word to explain this phrase in English, bcs we English speakers use different wordings that is more suitable for a situation’s nuances.) Then again, we have to consider speakers’ closeness as well because in Korea, it’s a huge thing. If you don’t understand how this works, you won’t understand the nuances of a conversation. Wow. WOW. WOOOOOOOW. So um, that first Wildcard+Thousands stream... was... *amazing* and also... a *lot* 😅 In the end, it was *exactly* what we were hoping for - a true stress test of ALL these systems coming together for the first time. We are SO grateful for the thousands of people who showed up today to play, attend, tune-in and help us PLAYTEST all this new stuff. We can't wait to see you all again at NEXT WEEK'S EX2 EVENT! So, now let's talk about how it went... Stuff that worked: - Our community SHOWED UP. Oh boy did you show up 😅. Our servers were straining under the load... which is good actually, in fact it's the whole point. Even more importantly, we have already received insanely valuable feedback, bug reports, stuff people loved/hated - and it's only been a few hours since the stream ended. I can't even explain to y'all how valuable this process is. Yes it's stressful, it reminds me of trying to keep Words With Friends online during that first insane year, but it's EXACTLY what we were hoping for (NEED) to turn this into the polished, top-notch game and streaming experience we are on a mission to deliver. I truly can't thank y'all enough, and hope to see you again when we run it all back again next week 🥹 - The stream itself stayed up and was mostly stable! Phew 😅. For context, ThousandsTV is not a twitch wrapper, it's a web3-native streaming tech stack built we built specifically to connect game, web/mobile, and blockchain together all at the same time. There are a LOT of moving pieces going on behind the scenes. - We brought viewers INTO THE GAME! Viewers showed up in the stands of the arena, with connected wallets/assets, triggered actions/rallies from chat, and were seen and heard during the whole stream. - The brand new 2v2 build of Wildcard was (mostly) stable and our players and viewers seemed to be having a blast down on the field and up in the stands. It was thrilling to watch Team Blue dominate, even though Team Red held their own in game 3! - Our production crew did an insanely good job running the stream, managing the players, shoutcasters, and talent, and producing a top-notch show. Of course we will work hard to make every stream better than the last, but I was super proud of how our team "rolled with the punches" during today's event. Stuff that didn't work (and/or needs to be dramatically improved): - Although it's fun to see chat going crazy, chat spam is actually something we are passionate to FIX. As you can see from the attached video, chat spam dominated today's stream and made it impossible for anyone to even see anyone else's messages. We have some GREAT ideas for how to fix this and actually turn chat spam into a FUN and exciting and not annoying thing - but those improvements didn't get shipped in time for this event. - Credits purchasing flow needs a LOT of work. As I'm sure y'all know, bringing money on chain is pretty complicated, and although we've been working hard to make this as seamless as possible, it still needs a TON of improvements. Many users who WANTED to spend money today weren't able to and/or ran into frustrating bugs in the credit purchase flow. Fixing this is obviously a top priority for our team. - Rallies need a LOT of work. Spectator-interactive features like rallies are at the heart of our vision for Wildcard. These "stream apps", as we call them, are the UNLOCK for how spectators, viewers and fans directly connect and interact with their favorite competitors, content creators, and communities. The current rally feature HINTS at this potential, but it needs to be WAY easier to understand, use, and have fun with. Improvements are ON THE WAY. - Referees were only partially working. Referees are a key innovation of the Thousands platform. They are AI-driven "personalities" (NPCs) that pay attention to everything that's happening in the arena, both on the field and especially in the stands (i.e. in chat, during rallies, etc.) The referees then make "calls" at the end of every match, rewarding users for their engagement and participation. Unfortunately, the referees weren't fully functional and seemed to drop the ball on recognizing everyone's contributions (especially people who showed up holding valuable assets such as Wildpasses in their wallets, and people who boosted those rallies with credits.) What's happening next: 1. We are combing through ALL the logs from the event right now, to make sure we don't miss a SINGLE action that our viewers and fans took during the event, including what they brought in their wallets (i.e. Wildpass holders!), any credits that were purchased, rallies that users engaged with, etc. This information is normally processed by our referees, who then determine dynamically how they're going to distribute $WC awards. We were originally hoping to complete this process and the subsequent airdrops within a few hours after the event, but given the amount of data, we need a bit more time to run these scripts (and airdrops) in batches instead of all at once, and make sure ALL of the data is being included. IMPORTANT: I will keep y'all updated in real-time here on twitter/X as this process is ongoing, and let you know the moment it's complete and all the awards have been distributed (i.e. when to go check your wallets 😎) 2. PLEASE keep sending us your feedback and bug reports. Open a ticket on our Discord and let us know what you loved, what you hated, and especially what we need to FIX. Given the overwhelming response to this event, it will likely take us several days to process everyone's feedback and fix all the bugs, but we WILL NOT REST until every ticket is closed/resolved. *Long sigh* Here we go again. E-bikes. Or in... this case, what are actually electric dirt bikes. Have you seen these two individuals? We know some of you are tired of hearing about this topic, but we’re determined to keep our community safe, and part of that means identifying the people putting others at risk. This video was taken yesterday around midday near Southlands Mall. One of our officers was patrolling the area when he spotted these two doubled up on what appears to be a modified electric dirt bike. These types of vehicles are not street legal in the City of Aurora and are classified as off-highway vehicles, similar to traditional dirt bikes, ATVs and side-by-sides. Only pedal-assist e-bikes are allowed on roadways and they must follow the same traffic laws as bicycles. These two were not. According to officers and security staff, the pair have repeatedly ridden recklessly through the Southlands area over the past several weeks. They’ve blown through stop signs and red lights, refused to stop for law enforcement and used sidewalks as their personal racetrack. As seen in this video, they eventually fled from officers onto a nearby path. One thing that makes this bike stand out: • The driver wears goggles strapped backward around the helmet • The passenger never wears a helmet • The bike is missing a front fender, which is unusual compared to similar bikes we’ve seen. This behavior creates a serious danger for pedestrians, drivers and everyone trying to safely enjoy the area. We wish this was rare, but incidents involving illegal and reckless e-bike riding continue to increase. Another reminder to parents: Know where your kids are riding. For the second year in a row, fate has... prevented my children from being included on the school's list of successful students... not because they didn't work hard, but because the aggression prevented them from experiencing a moment of joy due to the circumstances. Half of the humiliating airdrops they dropped were dropped in areas under army control, and everyone who went there was killed.. I don't know how long this hell will last.. Stepping down from the FURIA Roster permanently. Lots of... reasons really but the simplest is that I don't enjoy it, and competing in Apex Legends isn't what's best for me and the people around me. Financially, it just doesn't make sense, because it was heavily cutting into my content and I make more money off 1 month of content grinding then I would getting first place at LAN. My most viewed youtube video single handedly made more money than when I got 2nd place and won MVP at the Season Championship. Mentally, all of these things + the feeling of letting my team and community down due to lack of interest and commitment depressed me over time. It doesn't matter how good I am as a player, if I can't bring the fire to competition I'm just gonna get smoked. And my inconsistency in bringing that energy is what lead to our inconsistent performances. Every day felt like clocking in and I didn't care if we won or lost. Which isn't fair to my teammates when i could easily be replaced with someone who would happily dedicate their entire life to the team. Physically, the schedule we played on made it hard for me to pursue my health goals as I become far less happy. and so I fell off track more and more as time went on. Socially, the schedule of balancing content and competing made it almost impossible to hang out with friends and loved ones. Everyone is happy with the current scenario. Nobody got snaked. Nobody did anything wrong. The entire team will function better. I will be able to more easily pursue my physical, social, mental, and financial goals. This is what's better for everyone. If I couldn't enjoy playing even with my best friend there's no way I'll enjoy playing with any other roster, so I will be done permanently.
