Shyam Steel Group will invest ₹15,000 crore across multiple projects in Bengal, led by a 2 MTPA integrated steel plant at Mejia, Bankura. The steel plant alone will see an investment of ₹10,000 crore, raise the group's production capacity to 3.5 MTPA, and generate around 15,000 direct and indirect jobs. Once commissioned, it is expected to be one of the biggest steel plants in East India. The group will invest another ₹5,000 crore in defence manufacturing, industrial townships, fabrication, paints, industrial coatings, infrastructure, construction chemicals, engineering and other emerging sectors, creating 5,000 additional jobs. Together, the projects are expected to generate 20,000 employment opportunities. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari will visit Bankura later today to lay the foundation stone for the projects.show more

Just two months ago, we were on the verge... of letting go of a customer that we had been serving for more than two years. The prices were super competitive as they were procuring these springs from China. According to our cost calculations, we would have to sell them these springs at our breakeven price point. We would not be making any profit from their orders. The volumes were huge and we decided to take up the challenge. In manufacturing, one of the very important metric that your product cost depends on is cycle time. The speed at which we are able to process that part within the desired tolerance. Higher the speed at which you can manufacture, lower the cost of making that component. We could only manage 150 pcs/minute on our imported machines. At this speed, it was unviable for us. It would only make sense for us to continue if we were somehow able to manufacture this spring at a minimum of 200 pcs/minute. We were far apart and it seemed we wouldn’t be able to reach that goal. We were on the verge of giving up after two years of persistent effort in increasing our speed. Today, we manufactured that same spring on the CNC machines that we built in-house at a whopping 220 pcs/minute! We went from almost letting go off that customer to now asking that very same customer to increase our order volumes! First video is our imported machine at 150 pcs/minute. A lot of you are thinking that the spring... which we will supply to Prakash Dadlani will be produced at the speed of 1304 ppm. That’s not true. All springs are not made on one kind of machine. The CNC machine we built that produces springs up to 1304 ppm manufactures compression springs. Whereas, the springs for Prakash bhai will be made on one of our 12-axis CNC wire forming machine. And on this the speed is much slower but it has flexibility to produce a number of different kinds of springs and wire forms. The design, type, materials, wire diameter and profile, features and precision of the springs defines what kind of machine will be used. It’s not one machine that does it all. This video is of that springs being manufactured on our other CNC machine. Also, the operator is setting the spring up that is why he is using his hands.
