61 yrs ago today, radiologist Charles Dotter opened a blocked femoral artery with a catheter. He called it "Angioplasty." Rejected by U.S. surgeons, the concept was embraced in Europe & resulted in Gruentzig's balloon which revolutionized the treatment of CAD. #AngioHistory

Not long after the 1st angioplasties were done, I made a film w/Simon Stertzer introducing PTCA. Sponsored by USCI (anyone remember them?) it was shown at the 1980 American College of Cardiology meeting. Their booth was mobbed. Here's a clip, showing what eqpt was like then.😮🎈#AngioHistory

As Dr. Geoffrey Hartzler says in this video clip, Andreas #Gruentzig was always thinking about the patient. And #Gruentzig himself addresses these issues in my 1985 interview with him. Remember this was pre-stent, so a serious complication meant emergency CABG. #AngioHistory
