It is just so sad that the #NeurIPS2024 main conference ended with such a racist remark by a faculty when talking about ethics. How ironic! I also want to commend the Chinese student who spoke up right on spot. She was respectful, decent, and courageous. Her response was exemplary: she began by acknowledging the speaker’s efforts, then gave the speaker an opportunity to clarify (though, regrettably, the speaker’s reply only reinforced her bias), and ultimately called attention to the inappropriate racial bias and offered constructive suggestions. Thank you for speaking out!

Wrapping up the year and coinciding with #NeurIPS2024, today at Meta FAIR we’re releasing a collection of nine new open source AI research artifacts across our work in developing agents, robustness & safety and new architectures. Every wondered if we can model motion as a language? can we tokenize this new language? is it useful? Turns out tremendously! 🚀 In out latest #NeurIPS2024 paper on QueST: Self-Supervised Skill Abstractions for Learning Continuous Control, we find that action tokenization matters a lot! We can learn skill encodings by representing temporal action abstractions with a discrete codebook. This enables 2 things 1. Better Behaviour Cloning: we can better assimilate multi-task data (>9%) over best paper. This is currently best in class BC method! 2. generalization of this language to represent new tasks in 5-shot transfer to longer horizon tasks! Check out the thread by Atharva Mete for more details. 🌍Are LLMs aware of cultural and legal safety in today’s geo-diverse world? 🚀Introducing SafeWorld, our #NeurIPS2024 paper and benchmark assessing LLMs’ understanding of geo-diverse safety, based on cultural norms and policies across 50 countries and 493 regions/races. ⚖️We also propose a multi-dimensional framework for evaluating contextual appropriateness, accuracy, and comprehensiveness, revealing major gaps in current LLMs. 🧨To address this, we train SafeWorldLM using DPO, achieving SOTA performance and a 20% higher global human evaluator rating in helpfulness and harmfulness over competing models, including GPT-4o. 🔗Paper: 💻 GitHub: 🫶🏻This is a joint leading effort with Da Yin.
