1/4) In a human randomized controlled trial, stearic acid caused mitochondrial fusion. A low stearic acid vegan diet, by contrast, caused mitochondrial fragmentation. The data also show that fusion improves mitochondrial function and “beta-oxidation” (biochemical “fat burning”).

2/4) Animal data also suggest stearic acid can increase visceral fat loss. While I don't expect this fully translates to humans, it makes the point: macronutrients are NOT just about calories. Different sugars, fats, and proteins have different effects on metabolism.

Mitochondrial fusion = your cells working efficiently. Stearic acid promotes this fusion— helping your body burn fat better. Low stearic acid (common in vegan diets) may fragment mitochondria— which means less efficient energy and fat burn. Fuel your mitochondria wisely.

Reminder that LDL cholesterol is not the boogeyman it's been made out to be, and that improving health mostly comes down to improving metabolic health. Some targets below:

My dentist ate a vegetarian diet for five years. A first, she felt great. But later, her mind got so foggy she worried she had dementia and even saw her doctor about it. Eventually she added meat and other animal based foods back into her diet, and all her problems went away. Your brain needs the things that are in animal based foods. Specifically: B vitamins, iron, zinc, iodine, omega-3 fatty acids even creatine etc. Plant based diets require significant planning and/or supplementation to replace these nutrients otherwise you will run into problems eventually.

You may have heard it’s impossible to reverse plaque buildup in the heart. Your doctor may have told you lifelong statins are the only solution. I’m here to tell you that is patently false.

The number of people who still want to blame their genes for what their choices in life are doing remains staggering. When you state the fact that food is what’s making people chronically sick, people get angry and nasty. Damn, homies! I seem to have struck a nerve when I tell people it’s their responsibility to be healthy.

Since there’s been discussion about Colon Cancer over the past few days, I’ve decided to release my video covering new data on a ketogenic diet for colorectal cancer early. Below is a 79 second teaser. 🚨Some Key Considerations: 👉Epidemiology will never truly reveal cause-effect relationships between lifestyle and colon cancer. It’s fine for hypothesis generation, but not sufficient to make causal claims. 👉Animal model studies are limited insofar as they are non-human. That's true. However, have the power to provide insights into causal connections and mechanisms. In this study, to improve human relevance, the researchers used microbiome-humanized mice (see clip). *Don't disregard data because "oh, it's just animals." Sometimes, those are the most insightful and information data available on a given topic* 🚨Key Findings 👉Ketogenic diet reduced colon cancer tumor size and overall tumor burden 👉The mechanism appears to be due to the ketogenic diet altering the microbiome so as to increase the production of endogenous stearic acid, an 18 carbon saturated fat rich in cocoa butter, tallow, and shea butter. 👉Fecal transplant and exogenous stearic acid feeding experiments reveal the importance of the microbiome shift and anti-cancer potential of stearic acid 👉The stearic acid reduced inflammation and killed off cancer cells by apoptosis 🥓On Red Meat 👉As I review in the video briefly, red (and processed) meats are complex foods. They’re not just stearic acid. I will not rule out the possibility that meat, and particularly processed meats, could be a net negative for colon cancer risk given factors iron overload and/or chemical additives including processing. 👉However, I think it’s essential to keep in mind (1) dietary patterns and overall metabolic health matter MUCH more than any single food or ingredient. Effect size matters. (2) Given healthy user bias and food ‘lumping’ in epidemiology, it’s easy to draw misleading conclusions, e.g. red meat = universally bad for colon cancer risk. cc, with respect Dr. Rhonda Patrick 👉 As I review in the video (🔗 in first reply): “It’s entirely possible that a fatty ribeye steak [rich in stearic acid] could promote colon cancer when eaten with a side of fries by someone with obesity, while that same fatty ribeye steak could suppress cancer when eaten in the context of a clean ketogenic diet and by a healthy individual” ... CONTEXT MATTERS. Food for thought. cc Dr Shawn Baker 🥩 Joel "Heart Prevention" Kahn MD, FACC Meat Head Viva Longevity! SUPPLEMENTING YOUR WORK ENVIRONMENT WITH AN INCANDESCENT LIGHT BULB IMPROVES MITOCHONDRIAL FUNCTION! - A brand new (Jan 23th, 2026) paper published by Glen Jeffery and Edward Barrett demonstrates how adding a 60 W incandescent lamp to participants work desk dramatically improves color contrast, or a proxy for color vision. The intervention here is simply placing an incandescent lightbulb on the desk without direct irradiation on participants. And this is huge: “we have obtained significant balanced improvements in both the protan and tritan range. Previously, exposure to restricted experimental 670 nm resulted in improvements biased strongly in favour of only tritan function. Hence, exposure to full spectrum lighting results in a balanced pattern of improvement in visual performance.” The mechanism seems to be mitochondrial in nature. Short wavelength light, which is dominated in standard LED lighting, reduces mitochondrial function. There’s a reduction in mitochondria ATP production, and therefore a reduced demand for glucose. This intern can increase body weight and serum cytokinin levels. Also, with short wavelength blue light, there is an increase probability of cell aging and death. “It is suggested that this is partly due to 420–450 nm light, dominant in LEDs, being absorbed by porphyrin and the subsequent production of oxygen singlets driving inflammation.” “Conversely, exposure to longer wavelengths is associated with increased mitochondrial membrane potential and increased concentration of mitochondrial complex proteins that have declined with ageing and disease. This in turn is associated with elevated ATP, reduced inflammation and extended average lifespan.“ So, for the love of mitochondria, get long-wavelength light! This can be done in many ways: -sunlight/daylight exposure (does not need to be direct sunlight) -fire light -incandescent light bulbs -LEDs that emit long-wavelength light (yes, LEDs CAN emit red and near-infrared, but most don’t)
