It’s heartbreaking to watch this family video of brothers Gali and Ziv Berman, who were kidnapped from Kibbutz Kfar Aza. The video is from a few years ago, after the brothers returned from a trip. They came home to the warm embrace of their mother who clearly had missed them so much. Today, the brothers mark their 28th birthday as hostages in Gaza. Their family shared this message: “Our beloved Gali and Ziv, how we feared this day would come — a second birthday in hell. You are 28 years old today, though we’re not sure you even know it. We watch videos from past birthdays, from the normal world, and our hearts break. We know you don’t understand how you can still be there, or when you will be free again. We promise you this will happen — you will return to the safe embrace of your mother. Hold on just a little longer, survive, and dream of a happy ending.”

The Second Battle of Fallujah began twenty years ago today. Digging through some old hard drives, I found this interview I did a few days into the fight. It’s hard to believe it was two decades ago. For two intense weeks, we fought house to house, room to room—one of the largest battles the US had seen in over half a century. Uncommon valor was a common virtue. I’m immensely proud to have served alongside so many heroes in Third Battalion, First Marines, the ‘Balls of the Corps.” Today, I’m especially remembering those we lost, their families and loved ones, and all that we owe them. May their memories forever be a blessing.

During that time, I walked out of my office and a little girl came up and said, “Thank you for giving me two mommies.” I’ll never forget that moment. It’s a reminder of what’s at stake.
