Meet Mahalingappa Itnal, a farmer from Karnataka who just changed the game.🌽🌽🌽🌽🌽 For centuries, jaggery (gur) has been made almost exclusively from sugarcane, a crop that takes nearly a full year to grow and demands huge amounts of water. But Mahalingappa stood in his corn fields and asked a question so simple it had been overlooked for generations: “Why are we throwing away the stalks?” Corn stalks are usually treated as waste and burned, discarded, or left to rot after the harvest. Mahalingappa saw potential instead of waste. Through experimentation and persistence, he figured out how to extract juice from corn stalks and convert it into jaggery. The result? A nutritious, natural sweetener made from a crop that matures in just 90–120 days. This single insight quietly disrupts an entire system. Corn requires far less water than sugarcane, grows faster, and is already cultivated widely across India. Farmers can now earn additional income from what was once agricultural waste, without waiting a full year for returns. Less water stress. Less burning of crop residue. More resilience for small farmers. What makes this even more powerful is that the solution didn’t come from a lab, a multinational, or a billion dollar agri-tech firm. Here are the main importance differences between the eggs you see in a grocery store in America - Conventional eggs: Hens are raised indoors with no outdoor access, typically fed genetically modified corn and soy. This is the cheapest option with the lowest quality - Cage Free: Hens are not kept in cages but still live entirely indoors with no required outdoor access. Very close to conventional - Free Range: Hens have some (but often extremely limited outdoor access, usually just a small dirt area, and feed quality is not regulated. The label is frequently misleading because the hens likely will never go outside - Organic: Hens are fed certified organic feed, no GMOs or synthetic pesticides, but outdoor access remains minimal. Better nutrition from feed, but housing is similar to free range. This means likely less nutrient dense - Pasture Raised: Hens spend most of their lives outdoors with significant space, many are certified humane at 108 sq ft per hen. 10 years ago my focus was growing “400 bushel corn” … it gets a lot of attention, but it’s unpractical. The laws of diminishing returns cost you more than it gains you. Today I focus on capturing more value from free things. Attributes are assets if you can employ them. We’re finishing up our relay beans with the last pass here. For you to be in the right frame of mind you have to leave the mindset of maximizing monocrop yields and instead maximizing acre yield efficiently. Each day is hyper critical in the profitability of this system… that’s why even when we reach that peak ultimate practice efficiency… we’ll still be maxed at maybe 30-40% of our acres. I can only do things great within the constraints of time. I lay out all the specifics here but this is some truths I’ve learned from chasing high yields.. to conventional… no till… strip till… relay… alley… organic… grazing … Intergrazing… silvopasture Less plants require less inputs, especially nitrogen Soil temperature and WEOC drive plant growth Weed pressures come with bare soil You can index… or reallocate anything from fertilizers, chemistry, seed, etc You can cheat any system by leaning on the constraints to make the system work best Here in this specific system Follow early corn. The attributes of corn canopy, residue, N scavenge is an asset Plant wheat early. Every day in late September is worth 10x of those in late October Control weeds in the fall cheaply with good timing before you have them Control weeds in the spring and summer with timing and expedited canopy closure A great harvest plan for the wheat and the pruning of it, the straw, and the ☀️ is 10x more effective than any soil amendment or spray fertilizer. Account for the capability of single plants. They can yield 10x of a bunch of them slammed in a field competing with one another Sequencing plants allows you to stage different plant perceptions to get expressions, let live, and use their natural death to your advantage.
