Organic corn harvest between rows of 4-year-old walnut trees. This alley-cropping system features a rotation of organic grains, including corn and rye while the walnut trees mature and fill out, ultimately providing a windfall harvest of nuts and fine hardwood. The combined productivity of walnuts and grains grown together in this integrated system exceeds the total productivity of each crop grown separately on the same total land area – also known as overyielding. This is what peak-season corn is for. Sweet kernels cut straight from the cob, folded into a simple batter and fried until crisp, golden and tender in the middle. Corn fritters are summer cooking at its best. A sharp knife makes quick work of stripping the kernels from the cob, which is why I always reach for my Shun Cutlery knives. Farmers are selling their pre-purchased fertilizer at double what they paid instead of planting a crop. Let that sink in. It is more profitable to sit out the season and flip your input costs than to put seed in the ground. Soybean farmers lost $100 an acre last year. Corn farmers are looking at $50 to $100 losses this year. So what is the response? Switch from corn to soybeans. Soybeans make their own nitrogen. They do not need the fertilizer corn demands. The problem is we are already oversupplied on soybeans. More soybeans on a flooded market just drives prices lower. Fertilizer prices have gone through the roof. The Strait of Hormuz disruptions made it worse. Farmers who locked in fertilizer early are reselling it instead of using it. That is how broken the commodity food system has become. With the technology on today’s planters if the ground is fit and warm the corn seed has no idea whether the ground was “worked” or not…these better conditions usually take until the trees are leafing out… and sometimes we want to go a little early to get everything in timely. My preference is a stale seedbed because of how I can retain moisture around the seed longer. The last few years our goal has been to get all our fields perfectly level to do more of this every year.

Chipotle always promotes free toppings on their burritos like corn salsa, cilantro rice and so on. However many customers are taking advantage of it by ordering a burrito with double meat, then loading up on so many toppings it becomes impossible to wrap with a single tortilla, then they order another tortilla on the side and agent they get home they will take some of the filling from the huge burrito and make another burrito with the extra tortilla they got on the side. More and more people are taking advantage of this loop hole which allows customers to get a second burrito for only the price of the extra meat. Are customers going to ruin it for others or should Chipotle shut this down by weighing toppings here in out?

This is not Iowa or Nebraska, this is Bring Back Our Youths to Agriculture (BBYA) maize farm in Iyemero. I'm dedicating this week to showcasing the works of these committed Youths. Area Index Yield Based insurance cover is in place for the plantations in case of any unforeseen circumstances. This is being undertaken by PULA Advisor and Leadway Insurance. Ekiti is one of the first states to do this for free for the farmers. This is in partnership with the private sector (YSJ). Other private sector-driven agribusinesses in the state are also doing very well. Prospective processors are lining up to offtake the corn and add value. Ekiti State Government is about job creation through productivity.
