Statcast agrees, with PCA averaging 5.1 feet above average on his jumps (#1 by a good amount, almost all of that before the camera is on him). Makes the "catch" look quite easy because it is. 35% out probability on this ball:

Get your "glazing Pete Crow-Armstrong" pitchforks out, because here's another one! And he actually caught it this time... Just a 20% catch probability, but he makes it look so easy. Most MLB outfielders aren't catching this at all, and certainly not with a casual slide. Why? Per usual for him, the jump and route efficiency. +8.3 feet above average (43 feet total, another top 10 of these), and a 97.3% route efficiency.

Great play by Kahlil Watson this afternoon! 30% catch probability on this ball for now from Statcast. He actually played it so well he won't make any highlight reels, his jump was ~8 feet above average! A lesser outfielder on this play would be trailing behind Watson and have to make a more spectacular "catch" to get to this one:

I've had some replies that this Pete Crow-Armstrong catch IS actually a routine play, so here is a VERY similar play: The CF has the exact same distance to cover, and .2 of a second longer to get there. The CF (Carroll) was faster on the play, by about a foot per second. It's a double:

Lots of posts critical of Bryan Torres for not catching this ball that broke up Dustin May's no-hitter. Just a 20% catch probability on this 108 MPH liner, and that doesn't consider it's in shadow for most of the flight and then comes into bright sunlight at the end. Decent argument it would have been one of the best catches of the year if he made it. It's just a routine double well past most outfielders and they don't get blamed for not saving a no-hitter.

Catch of the Day- By The Numbers Cam Smith covers an incredible 137 feet to snag this foul ball off the bat of Zach Neto. Statcast gives it just a 20% catch probability, it's Smith's first 5-star grab of the season. +.8 OAA on this play. According to my search, Smith covered more ground than any outfielder did on a catch during all of 2025 (136 feet by Nathan Lukes).

One of my absolute favorite things about yesterday is the moment after contact where everyone in attendance registers that this ball is playable and Pete’s gonna catch it. The catch is *the moment* but that split second of realization is so cool.

This Wyatt Langford catch from yesterday is a great example of why catch probability is good to know. Just a 45% catch probability here. Why? Any MLB outfielder catches this ball if they get there. Most can't get there. Langford's jump is elite, +8.7 feet above the average outfielder. The jump is so good he doesn't even have to get up to top speed. This is just a routine double into the gap much of the time, and the TV viewer thinks nothing of it:
