Article 14 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), which Pakistan has ratified, guarantees the right to a trial before a ‘competent, independent, and impartial tribunal established by law. Amnesty International has documented a catalogue of human right violations stemming from trying civilians in military courts in Pakistan, including flagrant disregard for due process, lack of transparency, coerced confessions, and executions after grossly unfair trials. Therefore, any indication that the trial of civilians could be held in military courts is incompatible with Pakistan’s obligations under international human rights law. This is purely an intimidation tactic, designed to crack down on dissent by exercising fear of an institution that has never been held to account for its overreach. The right to a fair trial, guaranteed by Pakistan’s constitution, is severely undermined by this move and cannot be justified. It must be struck down immediately.” #UndeclaredMartialLaw #EndMilitaryTrials Amnesty Internationalsasia Human Rights Watch UN Human Rights UN Human Rights Council Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs (SCA) Department of State Assistant Secretary Riley Barnes

Strong Condemnation of Indonesia’s Illegal Military Deployment in West Papua We strongly condemn the continued and escalating deployment of Indonesian military forces in West Papua. This military presence is illegal under international law and cannot be justified on the grounds of security or stability. The deployment is fundamentally driven by business and economic interests, particularly the exploitation of West Papua’s vast natural resources, rather than the protection or wellbeing of the Indigenous Papuan people. Military operations are strategically positioned to secure extractive projects, land control, and corporate interests, while Papuan communities face intimidation, displacement, human rights violations, and ongoing violence. West Papua remains an occupied territory, and Indonesia’s militarisation represents a clear violation of the Papuan people’s right to self-determination, as guaranteed under international law and the UN Charter. The use of military force to facilitate resource extraction constitutes a form of modern colonialism and must be urgently addressed by the international community. We call on the United Nations, regional bodies, and all states committed to human rights and international law to: •Demand an immediate halt to Indonesia’s military operations in West Papua •Ensure unrestricted access for UN human rights mechanisms, journalists, and humanitarian organisations •Hold Indonesia accountable for violations of international humanitarian and human rights law •Support a peaceful, just, and internationally mediated process that respects the rights and aspirations of the Papuan people Silence enables abuse. The people of West Papua deserve justice, peace, and the full recognition of their fundamental rights.

Let me correct some inaccurate statements here: 1. Military trials in Pakistan are permitted under Article 245 of the Constitution, invoked to address acts threatening national security and integrity. These are neither illegal nor unconstitutional. 2. The events of May 9th were not peaceful protests but violent attacks on sensitive state institutions, including military installations, orchestrated to destabilize the country. Calling it a "false flag operation" is a blatant misrepresentation. 3. Those facing trials are not "innocent civilians." Evidence, including video recordings, clearly implicates them in acts of arson, destruction, and attacks on state property. 4. Amnesty International’s criticism disregards Pakistan’s sovereign right to defend itself from organized violence. Similar frameworks for military trials exist in democracies worldwide under extraordinary circumstances. 5. Accusations of torture and forced confessions are baseless. Pakistan’s judiciary ensures due process and oversight in all legal proceedings, including military trials. 6. The claim of 85 civilians sentenced to 10 years without legal process is incorrect. Each case follows constitutional provisions with proper legal representation provided. 7. Comparing Pakistan's military actions to authoritarian regimes ignores the context of the attacks and the country’s commitment to law and order. The government stands firm in ensuring accountability for those who attempted to undermine the state. National security cannot be compromised, and those involved in orchestrating chaos and targeting state institutions will face justice. These trials are a response to unprecedented violence, not an assault on democratic rights.
