The driver may have been completely wrong, but that does not give a Road Safety Officer the excuse to recklessly endanger the lives of everyone else on the road, including himself. Law enforcement is not supposed to become a greater danger than the offence being punished. If the very people responsible for road safety are creating situations that could cause serious crashes or deaths, then that is not enforcement. It is gross irresponsibility and a failure of professionalism. There must be accountability. Officers should not be allowed to hide behind the authority of their uniforms when their conduct puts lives at risk. A Thar driver first ran the vehicle over a student’s leg and then went on to completely smash an electric pole. SP sahab was absolutely right about the Thar. Once people get behind the wheel of a Thar, even otherwise sensible individuals seem to lose all sense and responsibility. This is not power. This is reckless behaviour and it puts innocent lives at risk.

A group of young teenagers were hanging outside moving vehicles, recklessly putting their lives and the lives of other road users at risk as if they were acting in a movie. This kind of impunity cannot be tolerated in a country governed by the rule of law. Three vehicles were being driven by drivers who appeared to be under the influence of alcohol. I believe many of these children have been given too much freedom by their parents, to the extent that they think having money places them above the law. I call upon the Inspector General of Police and the Nairobi Traffic Police to investigate this incident thoroughly, impound the vehicles if the law permits, and take appropriate legal action against the drivers and vehicle owners where offences have been committed. Any minors found engaging in such dangerous behaviour should receive appropriate intervention and counselling, while those responsible for endangering them should be held accountable. No one is above the law. Reckless behaviour on our roads must come to an end before innocent lives are lost.
