A blatant attempt by Ukrainian propaganda to whitewash the brutal work of TCK military conscription officers and police officers in Ukraine. The Ukrainian film about the work of the TCK "Easter Day" won an award for the best European feature film at the Krakow Film Festival. The film tells the story of two TCK employees who, while searching for men of conscription age in Kiev, stop a young man. He asks to first feed the cat and bless the Easter bread "paska", after which the characters embark on a joint trip around the city. According to the festival's description, the story is filled with "small everyday details, quiet disputes, and funny moments". After the victory, the film automatically gained the status of a candidate for the European Film Academy award. In reality, there are thousands of videos depicting completely different scenarios, when military conscription officers brutally and violently kidnap people off the streets and throw them into vans, regardless of the fact that they are disabled, have sick relatives at home, as well as children who have no one to look after them. On top of that, these officers are part of one of the biggest corruption schemes in Ukraine, who make millions of USD on misery of their own people.

1/ Wednesday, 31 December 2025, my wife and I were part of the three thousand five hundred guests or so who attended the Celestial Chorus Soirée, Third Edition, a Thanksgiving Year-End Event hosted by Dr K.R. and Mrs S. Tagwirei at the Harare International Conference Centre. Preceding the main event was a dinner banquet characterised by a lot of feasting, eating, song, and dance. Guests were served with a wide range of cuisine - Italian, French, Chinese cuisine, you name it. Being a Seventh-day Adventist event in the main, missing from the menu were alcoholic beverages. The dinner was served outside the Rainbow Hotel building, on the north side overlooking Samora Machel Avenue, in a specially designed construction complete with floor and roof, and well lit to the extent that you would mistake it for a permanent structure or appendage to the hotel building. I am short of words to describe the grandeur of the banquet, save to borrow from Johanne Masowe eChishanu. Guests were treated to a “Sapatina” to the accompaniment of serenading music - calm and light music. Of the music, to share, I took photographs of what impressed me the most, namely the three ladies dressed in angelic style, with immaculate dresses flowing to the floor, standing on raised platforms and belting out music from musical instruments as guests arrived. On the floor, as part of the cast, were girls donning angelic wings, waving and flowing with the music. After “the Sapatina, the food of angels”, guests trooped to the HICC Main Auditorium. As we strode into the auditorium, what immediately caught my eye, or rather what I looked at in amazement, was how the stage was set. It blew my mind off. Just in front of and below where I was sitting on the terraces was the full cast of an orchestra symphony. Right ahead was the illusion of a hill/mountain to climb, with performers dressed in white at different heights of this illusionary hill/mountain. In between the orchestra and the illusionary hill/mountain lay two platforms, with the one immediately next to the orchestra serving as a platform for presenter-singers, and the platform immediately in front of the illusionary hill/mountain serving as the location of the Director of Ceremonies and the pianist. The Director of Ceremonies, the very talented Everton Mlalazi, doubled up as director of ceremonies and presenter-singer. On either side of the singers’ platform, as part of the stage, were white-robed singers/dancers. As guests, we were treated to an unforgettable night of gospel music, with performers and audience coming from Zimbabwe, South Africa, Uganda, Nigeria, Zambia, Tanzania, etc. The gospel music performances took us to midnight and into the New Year, 2026, when guests trooped outside the hotel to watch the spectacular drone fireworks display. Farooq Ibrahim, a 54-year-old gaadiya vendor, has spent the past five years at Siyam World Maldives, bringing with him more than three decades of experience. Farooq said the idea of introducing a traditional gaadiya at Siyam World Maldives was proposed by the resort's manager, Ausy Waseem, and director of marketing, Sara Siyam, who approached him to help create an authentic Maldivian experience for guests. Drawing on his decades of experience, he advised them on how to develop the concept. Today, he said, the gaadiya has become one of the resort's most popular attractions and is recognised across Siyam World Maldives and other Siyam resorts. He explained that when he first joined the resort, the gaadiya sold only fresh coconuts (kurumbaa), which he felt would not be enough to sustain the concept. Based on his recommendations, the offering gradually expanded to include traditional Maldivian favourites such as hedhikaa, maskaashi, dhiyaa hakuru, and mudi kaashi. The gaadiya now showcases a wide range of local produce, including fresh screwpine fruit, with the live demonstration of cutting and serving the fruit becoming a memorable experience for many guests. Farooq said he hopes more resorts across the Maldives will establish gaadiyas to help preserve and promote Maldivian culture. The Vancouver Police Training Academy in the Woodward’s building was officially opened today at a ribbon-cutting ceremony with more than 275 guests and community members attending. “This state-of-the-art Academy represents a new chapter in the history of the VPD and, crucially, in how recruits are trained to become officers who will serve the unique and dynamic policing needs of Vancouver,” said Vancouver Police Department (VPD) Chief Steve Rai. “For the first time since 1978, when the Department last had its own training program, we will be able to fully develop the next generation of police officers in Vancouver -- from the day they join our organization to when they graduate and begin their careers with the VPD.” Forty “Class One” recruits began their studies at the facility in the Woodward’s building at 351 Abbott Street in the Downtown Eastside earlier this week. The students will complete their training and start work in the city on June 25, 2027. Another 40 recruits (Class Two) begin their studies January 18, 2027. “The opening of the Vancouver Police Training Academy is a significant milestone for public safety in Vancouver,” said Terry Yung, Minister of State for Community Safety and Integrated Services. “As a graduate and former trustee of the Justice Institute of B.C., training recruits within the city will give them valuable exposure to the operational environment, diverse communities, and public safety challenges they will encounter throughout their careers. This academy will help prepare the next generation of officers and strengthen public safety for residents, businesses, and visitors alike.” Initially announced in February 2026, the 30,000-square-foot, 3-floor Training Academy received provincial approval in March. Construction in the space formerly occupied by London Drugs began June 1. “The Academy is a foundational addition to the Woodward’s building and to the Downtown Eastside community. Greater police presence in the area is already showing a positive public safety impact with the addition of District 5 operations and will only continue to improve now the Academy is running,” said Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim. “Vancouver’s residents, business, and visitors are clear – safety is a top priority for them. This location was specifically chosen to enhance safety, stability and community in the DTES, Gastown, Chinatown and surrounding areas.” The City of Vancouver provided $4 million in total for the work, which included $2.8 million for the establishment of District 5 and $1.2 million for the Academy. Additional costs are fully funded within the approved VPD budget. “Today’s grand opening is indeed a milestone for VPD recruits and the Department. On behalf of the VPD, I thank the City of Vancouver, the Province, Westbank Properties, and the Vancouver Police Foundation for their support. I also want to recognize the many VPD officers and civilian staff who worked tirelessly over the last four months to build out the Recruit Development Program, including a Vancouver-centric curriculum, and to oversee the construction and all other facets of this project,” said Rai. “Ultimately, the Academy is an investment in public safety. Recruits coming through the VPD Academy will have the exceptional skills Vancouver residents, businesses, and visitors expect from the VPD, and they’ll be ready to deploy across the city the moment they graduate.” The Academy features: A virtual reality room where recruits can work through a multitude of high-pressure policing scenarios, including crisis intervention and de-escalation, mental health, and strategic communications Two large classrooms and two smaller classrooms designed for active learning with smaller cohorts to enhance the instructor-to-recruit ratio A report-writing room where recruits hone administrative capabilities A dedicated police radio channel for communications training A gym that includes a turf floor section for training Athletic therapy space A massage, physiotherapy, and first aid room Cafeteria Courses are taught by nine full-time instructors, all of whom are experienced VPD officers with first-hand experience of the policing challenges of the city. They will teach a provincially approved specialized VPD curriculum. Another nine officer instructors are in place at the Tactical Training Centre, where recruits complete use-of-force training, firearms instruction, and other critical skill-building. Driving instruction is provided by VPD trainers at Mission Raceway. All recruits at the Academy use laptops and work under major case management principles, learning VPD systems from Day One to ensure they are efficient and effective when deployed. Uncle, I will always remember you! – The youngest member of the tour group affected by the tragedy After God saved us from this fire, we have been so well looked after by all of you. We are truly grateful. We hope we will have MLAs & Ministers like you in our state. – Adult survivors When tragedies occur, the humane, quintessentially Tamil response is to aid the victims as if they were members of our immediate family. As a descendant of this magnanimous culture where helping people in distress is built into our DNA, as a former executive and administrator with decades of professional experience, as the MLA of the constituency where the tragedy occurred, and as a person who seeks to build bridges, I was gratified that I could do my part to the post-event recovery and relief efforts following the tragic fire which destroyed the entire compartment/coach in which a group of 64 tourists were traveling on a chartered pilgrimage tour, along with some employees of the tour operator. Though I was in Chennai when the tragedy occurred, I happened to travel to Madurai on the same flight as Thiru R N Singh, the General Manager of the Southern Railways, who was also on his way to support the relief efforts. Traveling and working closely with him and his team (including the DRM, Madurai) over the rest of the day, we were able to combine the measures authorised by the Hon’ble CM M.K.Stalin, and the usual measures and resources of the IRCTC and Railways, to do our best to the survivors, as well as preserve the dignity and ensure the rapid return of the deceased to their homes. For his help in releasing the mortal remains of the deceased in record time after post-mortem and inquest, I thank the Dean of the Madurai Medical College and Rajaji Hospital, and the Commissioner of Police, Madurai. I thank the DIG CISF Chennai for his humanitarian role in ensuring the remains were sent quickly from Chennai to Lucknow, and for requesting that the Sr Comdt CISF ASG Lucknow help from his end to deliver them to the grieving families. I also want to highly commend the Mayor of Madurai Corporation Mrs Indrani Ponvasanth, who personally led the many officers of the Corporation (starting with the CHO and the Medical Team who provided not just Medical Treatment but also psychological counselling using members of the tour party and staff of Southern Railways who could translate where needed) for providing triage, basic support, relief material, medicines and other help to the affected people – throughout the day, and up till their departure in batches over the next day. We were even able to arrange a visit to the Arulmigu Meenakshi Amman temple for those devotees who requested one before their return by flight (arranged by the IRCTC) over the next 24 to 36 hours – as that was the reason for the tour to have come to Madurai in the first place. I got to see off the last batch of about 20 survivors at the Airport, as they waited for their flight to New Delhi, and then onwards to Lucknow, the point of the tour’s origin. The quotations above, mentioned by them during that last send-off, were a timely reminder that compassion and empathy are the essence of humanity, and of public service. They transcend all boundaries of language, region, or culture. Every crisis is a testing time. Every crisis also brings us together as one. Unlike some who look to exploit every development for propaganda & political gain, our millennia-old Tamil Culture always guides us to humane and thoughtful actions. A thorough investigation, and consequent actions to avoid the risk of such tragedies in the future, must be undertaken. I hope and trust the Railways will do so diligently.

I want to clarify something about posting about the statues or figures. I don't sell the Resident Evil products, statues, or figures that I post. A teen who was assaulted and slammed by a Warren police officer during booking has filed a $50 million lawsuit. The lawsuit was filed this week by Fieger Law. Matthew Rodriguez, 48, an officer with 14 years on the force, was charged Friday with assault and battery charges. Warren police announced Monday that he had been fired According to the lawsuit, the teen suffered physical and mental damage due to excessive force, and the city of Warren failed to properly train the officer. "Officer Matthew, with the specific intent to intimidate and/or harass Plaintiff, as a result of his race and/or ethnicity, caused physical contact with Plaintiff by striking him in the head and/or face with a fist and pulling him off the ground by his hair," the lawsuit reads. The lawsuit also says that the two other officers in the video failed to intervene and help the teen. “This is one of the most flagrant cases of police misconduct I’ve seen in my entire career as a trial attorney. The sheer violence and disregard for human life that these three officers showed is despicable and cannot be tolerated," said James Harrington of Fieger Law. The incident happened early this week at the Warren police department. The video shows the officer punching and grabbing the 19-year-old by his locs before slamming & launching him into his cell. Warren Police Commissioner Bill Dwyer says an investigation was launched after the two officers in the video stepped up and told a supervisor about the incident. One officer was telling Rodriguez "That's enough" multiple times in an attempt to make the officer stop, Dwyer said. At first, they did not know why the officer was attacking him.
