Khata-Khat badh gayi mehengai! After not fulfilling the promises of transferring Rs 8500/month to a woman of each family, Congress ruled Karnataka government has saddled the people of Karnataka with the burden of paying Rs 3/litre more for petrol and diesel in the state. After this decision, people of Karnataka would be forced to pay higher amounts for food items, clothing, medicines and all items of basic necessities as fuel prices directly impact prices of all goods. Such a decision just after elections have been concluded, exposes the hypocrisy of the Congress which talks about mehengai but levies approximately Rs 8litre-Rs 12/litre additional VAT in comparison with BJP ruled states. With this hike, petrol in Karnataka is now Rs 8.21/litre more expensive than both BJP-run governments in UP and Gujarat. The price gap is even more staggering if Karnataka is compared with BJP-governed Arunachal Pradesh where the party has come back to power strongly. The petrol prices in Karnataka are over Rs 12/litre higher than in Arunachal. The price gap for diesel is Rs 8.59/litre between the two states with Arunachal being much less expensive. During the last three years of global energy turmoil, the NDA government led by PM Narendra Modi Ji deftly diversified India’s crude oil purchases to ensure that petrol prices actually decreased by about 14% and diesel prices fell by nearly 11% during November 2021 -May 2024 period. During the same period, US saw petrol prices soar 29%, while neighbours Pakistan and Sri Lanka faced severe financial stress due to spike in global crude prices. Additionally, to maintain availability and affordability of transport fuels, Modi government made substantial and timely cut in excise duty in November 2021 and followed it up with another cut in May 2022. The Central govt reduced petrol and diesel prices by ₹5 per litre and ₹10 per litre, respectively, in November 2021. Following up in May 2022, petrol and diesel prices were further cut by ₹8 per litre and ₹6 per litre, respectively. Again on March 14 this year, the OMCs played a vital role in reducing prices further by Rs 2/litre. The BJP-run state governments aligned with the pro-people policies and reduced sales tax on transport fuels to further cut rates for the public and rein in inflationary pressures. For instance, petrol prices in Congress-ruled Telangana is Rs 12.76/litre higher than in UP. The difference in diesels prices between these two states is also significant at Rs 7.89/litre. Similarly, the petrol prices are Rs 9.29/ litre higher in Trinamool Congress-run West Bengal compared with BJP-run Gujarat. PM Modi Ji’s visionary leadership ensured that while the world was facing fuel price surge due to a war in Europe, India remained the only country during that period where petrol and diesel prices went down. #Khatakhat #Hypocrisy

Rakesh (name changed) had sold crypto tokens worth Rs 98,500 through peer-to-peer (P2P) transactions for about Rs 100,000 back in 2022, making a meagre profit of Rs 1,500 on this sale. He received the entire amount in his bank account and the transaction happened through a centralised exchange. A few weeks ago, he received a notice from the income tax department flagging his Rs 100,000 deposit. On producing screen shots of the P2P trade and the statement generated by the exchange as a proof, the official asked him to pay 78% or Rs 78,000 in fine on a Rs 1,500 profit.

Even by an accountant’s standards, it was a poor account of the management of the finances in 2025-26. Revenue receipts were short by Rs 78,086 crore, total expenditure was short by Rs 1,00,503 crore. Revenue expenditure was short by Rs 75,168 crore and capital expenditure was cut by Rs 1,44,376 crore (Centre Rs 25,335 crore and States Rs 1,19,041 crore). Not a word was said to explain this miserable performance. Actually, the Centre’s capital expenditure has fallen from 3.2 per cent of GDP in 2024-25 to 3.1 per cent in 2025-26. In revenue expenditure, the cuts have fallen in heads that concern the common people. Examples: ⦁ Rural Development: Rs 53,067 crore ⦁ Urban Development: Rs 39,573 crore ⦁ Social Welfare: Rs 9,999 crore ⦁ Agriculture: Rs 6,985 crore ⦁ Education: Rs 6,701 crore ⦁ Health: Rs 3,686 crore Funds have been cut in crucial sectors and programmes. Expenditure on the much-vaunted Jal Jeevan Mission was cruelly cut from Rs 67,000 crore to a paltry Rs 17,000 crore. (In 2026-27, it has been boosted to Rs 67,670 crore, but what credibility does the number have?) After the months-long exercise, the revised estimate of the fiscal deficit has adhered to the budget estimate of 4.4 per cent, and the projection for 2026-27 is that the fiscal deficit will fall by a meagre 0.1 per cent of GDP. The revenue deficit will remain at 1.5 per cent. It is certainly not a bold exercise in fiscal prudence and consolidation. The most serious criticism of the Budget speech is that the Finance Minister is not tired of adding to the number of schemes, programmes, missions, institutes, initiatives, funds, committees, hubs, etc. I counted at least 24. For current 15th Finance Commission from 2020-21 till 31st march 2026, in four years Karnataka has already received Rs 1,29,854 crores. It is estimated that at the end of the fifth year, Karnataka would’ve received Rs 1,74,339 crores. This is regards to tax devolution. If you look at Grants-in Aid, in 10 years of UPA, Karnataka received Rs 60,779.84 crores. In 9 years of Modi Govt, Karnataka received Rs 2,08,832.02 crores. Over and above that, Additional Grants-in-Aid of Rs 18,005 crores has been budgeted this year for release for Karnataka. In our 10 years, Karnataka is getting Rs 2, 26,837 crores. Karnataka has also received Rs 6,280 crores as 50-year Interest Free loan. Where is Karnataka being denied money? Where is Karnataka receiving less money? - Smt Nirmala Sitharaman in Lok Sabha.

In most places in the US, you can't trade onion futures. This is because of the the Onion Futures Act of 1958, a U.S. federal law that permanently bans futures trading in onions. As a result, onions are the only commodity explicitly prohibited from futures markets in the United States. The Act came about after an episode in the early 1950s, when onions were actively traded on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. Two men named Vincent Kosuga and Sam Seigel bought up enormous quantities of physical onions, and gained control over storage and distribution. By dominating the available supply, they were able to push prices higher while simultaneously taking large short positions in onion futures, which was a bet that prices would eventually fall. Once their short positions were in place, Kosuga and Seigal released massive amounts of onions back into the market, flooding supply and causing prices to collapse. Accounts from the period describe warehouses overflowing with onions, spoilage accelerating, and farmers unable to sell their crops for prices that even covered transportation costs. The collapse was so severe that some farmers reportedly burned or dumped onions rather than bring them to market.
