A LINUX KERNEL DEVELOPER PROVED THE THING YOU PUSH CODE TO IS SECRETLY A DATABASE THAT CAN VERSION ALMOST ANYTHING AND THAT MOST DEVS HAVE ONLY EVER TOUCHED A TENTH OF IT 42 minutes from Josh Triplett -- a longtime Linux kernel and Debian developer -- showing that Git... show more

I had to stop watching after a few minutes. The audio clipping is painful to listen to.

join my tg for the actual alpha on ai, financial markets and coding ->

The host asks the question I was thinking every single time

no way bro haha

I mean, hello? Git is actually more like a blockchain than a database. But yes both are technically databases. I dont think this comes as a surprise to any developer who read anything about how git works.

I'm using Git for versioning product specs that are maintained in your SQL. I didn't make it myself, just using Dolt DB underneath. But now the interesting part is I can diff specs separately from the code. If code changes, and spec is updated, I can look at spec diff first, then code.

the all-caps delivery makes this feel like ancient forbidden knowledge being revealed and honestly that's the only way this take should be served.

Approved, combined with nix it is crazy what you can manage and version with just one git mono repo

100% bro

you are like 15 years late lol

Let’s go

Yes, I do all my technical documentation using git+Markdown+MermaidJS.

most devs learned just enough Git to stop the bleeding and called it done

I’ve been doing this for a few years. A five years ago I wrote my own for server to accelerate it. Two years ago I made a fully streamable so that the server could react in milliseconds to an update. I’m working on my next video update.

nice share!

Still don’t know how to use Linux

That's fine. 99% of time you don't even care about your code 1 version ago, not to mention 10 versions ago.

you learned five commands to survive. this is the talk that shows you were standing on top of a database the whole time.

Linux marked an entire era fr

git as a database is the kind of idea that changes how you use it

Imagine all the creative uses for Git!

Files are files. *mind blown*

This is almost embarassing to state so openly. He’s a kernel developer? What’s he work on, documentation typesetting? OSes have these things called filesystems. Maybe use one of those?

I wrote my master thesis on a db-like extension for git and was kindly provided with this link to an email on the idea of git: The interesting part is that git is about distribution and archiving tasks

Any YouTube links?

wow that :ninja: looks and sounds exactly like the guy who'd teach a class to use a DVCS as a general purpose database gooolly

本当に驚くべき情報ですね!Gitの活用範囲が広がる可能性に期待が高まります。

someone please fix the audio!!!

I wonder how long it took to prove that

this guy r so smart haha

That's wild! So we’ve barely scratched the surface of what Git can do? Imagine all the hidden features waiting for us! 🧐

This is really very smart

A dev team i supported was bewildered when I used it, as repo, of requirements documents. Yes, ms word documents.

Inject into my veins! Never got the hate it gets! Is that really hard? Are you really in programming business?
