Tonight, a total solar eclipse will cross parts of Europe. I’m also very happy to see my project featured in Datawrapper’s Dispatch, alongside wonderful work from Reuters and The New York Times — teams whose work I’ve admired for years. It’s a real honor to be in such company. Over the past few days, I’ve made a lot of improvements to my Solar Eclipse Atlas. I’m especially grateful to Ernie Wright, a lead visualization specialist at NASA, who took the time to review the project and suggest a small but important improvement. I’ve already implemented it, making the visualization of eclipse paths more accurate. I’ve also added a new feature to the city view. You can now hover over any eclipse and see how it actually unfolded in the sky: how the Moon moved across the Sun, or how it will move during a future eclipse. So for any city, you can now simulate any solar eclipse from 2000 BCE to 3000 CE and see what it looked like from that exact place on Earth. #eclipse #sun

What we see is a black circle appearing out of nowhere and moving across the face of the sun. The point being, a solar eclipse is not what they taught you in school. This is because I have had an interest in astronomy for over two decades. This eclipse offered a profound masterclass in celestial mechanics and orbital predictability. The maximum duration of totality in Spain during this event was 2 minutes and 18 seconds. The total solar eclipse was a historic celestial event, marking the first total solar eclipse visible from mainland Europe since 1999, around 27 years ago. It was also the first total eclipse to sweep across Spain since 1905, around 121 years ago. Other parts of Europe also experienced only a partial eclipse. From a scientific perspective, this rare event underscores the divine mathematical precision governing our solar system.
