Sand Mafia K.Annamalai has stolen 1000s of tons of sand from Noyyal river by sending a Hyundai and a Komatsu sand mining crawler equipment into Noyyal River. Sand mining was done up to a stretch of almost one kilometer and annamalai's land was filled with the sand excavated from the river bed in complete violation of both criminal and environmental laws. A complaint was made to police, Thasildhar, Collector District Collector, Coimbatore and SP by one Mr. Babu but of no avail. Not even CSR was issued by the police despite agreeing that it amounted to public property theft. As a result of it, Muttathu Ayyanar Temple on the banks of Noyyal River is expected to be inundated. Local protests by commoners were ignored by annamalai who has been promising to meet them but despite one month of stopping of the act by locals, he has avoided visiting them. It is criminal act by of sand theft by K.Annamalai. It is also a huge environmental violation and a case is being filed in appropriate forum for environmental violation. The reason for praising TVK Vijay in New Jersey, America was to ensure no action is taken against him for such huge environmental violation. The act of sand mining was carried out without any permissions and i am filing a case against district collector for dereliction of duty despite petitions in this regard by one Mr. Babu, a local BJP Tamilnadu activist. Request CMOTamilNadu to order an impartial probe into as to how the Thasidhar, VAO and others colluded with Annamalai and permitted such a huge violation to take place. SP/Collector must impound the 2 equipment in question and take criminal action against annamalai for sand theft and environmental violation. Shouldn't we call him #SandMafia_Annamalai?!

🌐🆘Tisza: Tons of garbage are flowing from Ukraine to Hungary – extreme pollution again in February 2026. At the end of February 2026, the Tisza River is once again bringing huge amounts of garbage from Ukraine to Hungary, causing serious environmental damage downstream. According to footage shared on social media and in the Hungarian media, the flooded Tisza is carrying large piles of plastic bottles, PET bottles, plastic bags, branches and other municipal waste, which mainly comes from the Ukrainian side of the Carpathians. The Hungarian daily Magyar Nemzet reported on February 26, 2026, that “tons of garbage” (tonnaszámnyi koládek) are flowing into the country, with the largest share being plastic bottles. The portal reported on the same day that the river was carrying “several tons of waste” from Ukraine, with videos posted on social media showing the critical situation – the water literally “rolling” piles of plastic and debris towards the Hungarian-Ukrainian border, especially in the Balsa area of Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg county. This phenomenon is not new, but the February 2026 wave was exacerbated by the rapid melting of snow and ice in the Carpathians and heavy rains in Transcarpathia. The roots of the problem lie in the inadequate waste management system in the mountainous regions of Ukraine and in the fact that during floods, waste from banks, illegal landfills and directly dumped waste enters the rivers. Ukrainian sources (e.g. the Novini Zakarpattya telegram channel) confirm that intense thawing and rains have caused a sudden increase in the amount of floating waste. The Tisza has been one of the most polluted rivers in Europe with plastic waste for decades. Approximately half of the waste comes from Ukraine (mainly from the Transcarpathian region), the other half from Romania (via tributaries such as Someș/Szamos). The war and economic crisis in Ukraine have further worsened the situation - the waste collection and disposal system has collapsed in many places and landfills overflow directly into the rivers during floods. The Hungarian authorities - the National Water Management Administration (Országos Vízügyi Főigazgatóság, OVF) - started collecting waste upstream on 25-26 February 2026 using floating waste collection devices. However, a long-term solution requires international cooperation between Ukraine, Romania and Hungary, as pollution crosses borders. The Tisza originates in the pristine Carpathian Mountains, but by the time it reaches Hungary, it carries tons of municipal waste with it. The current wave once again highlights that protecting the ecological state of the river is a shared responsibility and that simply eliminating the consequences is not enough – prevention at the source is the key.

According to Roy Scheider, "Filming 'Sorcerer' (1977) made 'Jaws' (1975) look like a picnic". He considered the Bridge scene to be the most dangerous he has ever acted in. The scene was so real that he said, "What the audience will see on that screen is what really happened." Building the bridge cost about a million dollars. It took 3 months to complete. Friedkin called it "A mad enterprise and definitely life threatening". The bridge was built on what they considered to be a "perfect river" in Dominican Republic. It was 12 feet deep. However, there were weeks without rainfall and the level of the river started dropping. The river has never went dry before according to the locals. When the bridge was completed, the river had only 1 feet of water making it impossible to film the scene there. With only 2 scenes left to film, the crew had to leave for Mexico to shoot the bridge scene. So they decided to shoot the scene in a river in an Aztec village in a remote location in Mexico. The Bridge had to be reassembled and anchored in the new location. The shutdown of production had lasted a month which was a huge expense to the management. When the crew arrived at the village, there was a huge exodus of the local population. When Friedkin enquired, he was informed by one of the authorities that it was because of word of William Friedkin's arrival. They were a deeply religious people, and when they heard the man who made "The Exorcist" (1973) was coming to their village: they felt it was "bad karma". But few of the locals stayed and helped with the filming. Before arriving, Friedkin was informed that it rained often in the area, but didn't know that it was only in the summer season. Since it was the fall, there was no rain and the river began to drop at the rate of six inches or more a day. The water was diverted to the location of the bridge in the river using large pipes and pumping equipment. Since Friedkin wanted to shoot the scene in the rain, they brought in half a dozen large sprinklers that drew water from upriver. The scene runs twelve minutes, roughly 10 percent of the final cut, but it took months to complete and cost more than $3 million, most of it not budgeted. ("The Friedkin Connection: A Memoir", William Friedkin, 2013 & Roy Scheider's interview to the The New York Times, 1977) P.S: On this day, 49 years ago, "Sorcerer" (1977) was released in the USA.

Before & After… If anyone doubts the power of community action over the Environment Agency’s spineless inertia, you can walk to the outskirts of Ilford & walk along an ancient lost river to see for yourself. With 10 days of intense effort by dedicated volunteers, the river River Roding Trust managed to clean up & restore 250 metres of the Aldersbrook (about 1/3 of the brook). This allows a direct comparison between the parts of the brook we restored & those we haven’t got round to yet. These photos & videos are all from May 2026. The first is on a part of the Aldersbrook still to be restored & shows the old flood defences which are no longer needed & are killing the river but which the EA won’t remove unless we volunteers pay them £50,000 just for surveys. These defences have caused 2-3ft of stinking sludge & silt to build up over 70 years, such that the water in the brook is just a few centimetres deep. Combine with huge amounts of rubbish & and out of control knotweed infestation & the river ecosystem is essentially dead. A river that is older than England destroyed by official indifference. A hundred metres away, and it’s a different story. The rubbish & the invasive species (I sprayed the knotweed myself last autumn) are gone. The silt that used to clog the river is now spread on the banks & rapidly providing fertile ground for native plants. Instead of sludge, there’s 2-3ft of water, so fish have returned to the brook for the first time in decades, along with dragon flies, herons & a nesting moorhen. We river guardians knew our intervention would make a difference, but have been shocked at quite how quickly nature has come back. The restored Aldersbrook is now a rare jewel: pretty much the last fully natural tidal brook in London. The EA now has a choice. It can salvage some good from this situation & work with us to restore the remaining sections of the brook, or it can continue to do nothing. If the latter, river guardians *will* be back this winter to finish the job & the EA can see how well prosecuting volunteers for restoring a river without permission goes for them.
