Cenk Uygur released a video on how the Israel-Palestine issue should be solved, comparing it to the Cyprus issue. While his intentions may have been good, there were several historical inaccuracies in his speech. 1️⃣ By the time tensions began in the 1950s, the population of Cyprus was roughly 70% Greek Cypriot and 30% Turkish Cypriot. 2️⃣ The Ottomans conquered Cyprus from the Venetians in 1571 and ruled for 307 years before British administration began. Ottoman rule was never considered an “occupation” because Cyprus has never been Greek. In fact, the Ottomans granted rights and religious freedom to Greek Cypriots—who had been treated as state-owned slaves under Venetian rule. 3️⃣ Violence against Turkish Cypriots lasted from 1955 to 1974. It began with the EOKA terror campaign and targeted killings, followed by the Greek Cypriot armed takeover of the Republic in 1963, leading to 11 years of ethnic cleansing and massacres against Turkish Cypriots. 4️⃣ Türkiye did not “invade” Cyprus in 1974. It legally intervened following a Greek military coup aimed at uniting the island with Greece. This was a lawful intervention under Türkiye’s guarantor rights as set out in the 1960 Treaty of Guarantee. 5️⃣ Türkiye did not occupy the entire island. From 20–22 July 1974, it secured around 3%, and during a second operation from 14–16 August, it reached roughly one-third of the island. There was no “land given back”—the island became effectively partitioned, ushering in nearly 50 years of peace between the two communities. 6️⃣ There is no “wall” separating the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and the Greek Cypriot South. Instead, there is a UN-operated border with nine official crossing points and millions of crossings annually. The border remains one of the most open and peaceful in the world.

The issue in Cyprus goes beyond a technical debate over power-sharing between two communities; it is fundamentally a matter of recognizing the sovereign equality and equal international status of the Turkish Cypriot people. It acted after Greek Cypriots literally burned Turkish villages, literally executed civilians, and literally staged a coup to annex Cyprus to Greece in 1974. Let me remind you what LITERAL means: - Muratağa, Sandallar, Atlılar: 126 Turkish Cypriots—most of them women and children—LITERALLY buried in mass graves. - Between 1963 and 1974, over 30,000 Turkish Cypriots were LITERALLY forced into ghettos and cut off from life on their own island. - The 1960 Constitution, which was LITERALLY signed by both Greek and Turkish Cypriots, was torn up LITERALLY overnight by one side. What triggered Türkiye’s intervention was not ambition, but Enosis—the Greek national project of unifying Cyprus with Greece. The July 1974 coup, orchestrated by the Greek military junta, aimed to erase Turkish Cypriots from the island’s political map. Türkiye, as a legal guarantor power under the 1960 Treaty of Guarantee, intervened after diplomacy collapsed and the very survival of Turkish Cypriots was at stake. TENSION AT THE BORDER IN CYPRUS! A Greek Cypriot farmer tried to cause trouble in the buffer zone by violating the TRNC border instead of his land located in the buffer zone. A Turkish soldier intervened and prevented the Greek farmer from violating the border. He clearly conveyed the message that if he continued to do this, the necessary steps would be taken. The TRNC police also intervened and the Greek Cypriot farmer was stopped. The Greek Cypriot farmer then began to spread lies about the incident by stating, "A Turkish soldier pulled a gun on me while I was working on my land." The Greek Cypriot media provoked the incident and a complaint was made to the UN. A Syrian man is attacked by Greek Cypriot fascists whilst they burn his business down. The thugs who did it belong to ELAM, a neo-Nazi organisation which is currently the 4th largest political party within the Greek Cypriot administration. If not for Türkiye, Turkish Cypriots would be subjected to these same attacks. Just like they were between 1963 - 1974. Abdul El-Sayed: Too many of the same people who say that they're for a two-state solution are also for sending our taxpayer dollars to the tune of billions to a foreign government that is dead set on foreclosing on the possibility of a second state. You can't say you're for a two-state solution when you're supporting the people who only want one state. So I just think that we in this country have had an inconsistent approach to this for a very long time. Abdul El-Sayed: Too many of the same people who say that they're for a two-state solution are also for sending our taxpayer dollars to the tune of billions to a foreign government that is dead set on foreclosing on the possibility of a second state. You can't say you're for a two-state solution when you're supporting the people who only want one state. So I just think that we in this country have had an inconsistent approach to this for a very long time.
