@ali_naka You are too invested in South African matters, I wonder when are you going to use this energy towards your country. Your country is collapsing, all you care about is South Africa. This is why South Africans hate you guys.

Sad indeed. In the end the police minister will be sued as his members aided the vigilantes and failed to protect a citizen. The out of court settlements are usually in millions of Rand and never made public. This is taxpayers paying for the negligence.

You right a long article about internal affairs of South Africa but almost all African countries have tribal battles. South Africa has few or no tribal issues. Focus people, your countries are shitholes. Fix, fight, focus

You can make South Africa the Mecca of xenophobia all you want. That element needs to be out rooted but the fight for the abuse of our country must stop. And this selective chastising of SA while almost all your countries are tribalistic is funny to me.

I will always tell people, don't even bother or stress yourself. Nature and time will always sort it out. You don't look like the original black South Africa once the first assignment is concluded without people's consent or view. Even Bob Marley once warned about.

Crime breeds crime and needs to be stopped ! African countries don’t tolerate crimes like illegal immigration, drug trafficking, rape, damage to infrastructure, illegal churches, illegal mining, etc but they expect SA to put up with these ! Our constitution and govt are to blame !

The SA government doesn't only SUPPORT these attacks against foreigners it FUNDS these thugs. SAns should be VERY CAREFUL, the day these foreigners will decide to DEFEND THEMSELVES, there will be a BLOODBATH in that country. Baring in mind MOST of those foreigners are SOLDIERS.

This is tragic and painful to watch. A South African telling another fellow South African that they cannot work in another South African province simply because they come from a different province. Someone once warned that when xenophobes and Afrophobes are done targeting foreign nationals in South Africa, they will eventually turn on fellow South Africans. That warning is now becoming reality. Imagine a black South African telling another black South African that they do not “look like people from this province”, therefore they cannot work there. How painful is that? To be told in your own country that you do not belong because of how you look, how you speak, or where you come from. This is backward. This is dangerous. This is a tragic failure of critical thinking and leadership. South African leaders should never allow this poison to grow. History has already shown us where this type of thinking leads. In Rwanda, people were divided, dehumanised and eventually butchered on the basis of identity and appearance. We should never allow Africa to move anywhere near that darkness again. What is happening is unacceptable on every level. It is heartbreaking as a black African to watch fellow black Africans treat each other this way. Those of us perceived to be elites are often insulated from this madness because we live in affluent areas and work internationally. But what about ordinary people trying to survive? Are we now saying a carpenter from Gauteng cannot travel to North West to look for work because he “does not look like people from there”? Come on. This is bad. Very bad. Africa cannot progress while people are taught to hate one another over provincial identities, ethnicity or nationality. Leaders across the continent must stand up firmly against this nonsense before it destroys communities and generations. Africa needs unity, dignity, tolerance and opportunity, not this shameful politics of division.

The South African President, Cyril Ramaphosa, said that South Africans were deeply ashamed of the criminal actions of a few South Africans, which resulted in fellow Africans living in South Africa being treated badly, discriminated against, ill-treated, and forced to leave the country under the threat of violence. He condemned such actions, stressing that they do not represent the values of South Africa and that Africans living in the country should be treated with dignity and respect. However, President Ramaphosa’s statement is contrary to what he told journalists before today, when he said there was nothing wrong with what the South Africans had done and that he was not worried about it. So, either he is playing the African leaders he was addressing, telling them what they want to hear, or he is playing South African citizens through their media by saying things domestically to placate them and then going to an international forum, such as the Durban SADC meeting, and saying something completely different. You cannot credibly hold two contradictory positions on such a serious issue depending on the audience you are addressing. If you tell South Africans one thing at home and tell African leaders something different at an international gathering, legitimate questions arise about which position you actually believe. That is the kind of duplicitous behaviour we too often see from African leaders. The real test of leadership is not what you say, but whether you say the same thing when the audience changes.

In conversation with some comrades a few weeks ago, we reflected on how the painful contradiction with those who use hate and violence against foreign nationals, in order to mobilise popular support, extort money or pursue votes, is that they are bound to commit an inhumane act towards their own self-destruction. All of them, their downfall is the inhumanity of what they do, because at the core of what they are doing, is cruelty and inhumanity, and it is then when they will know that South African people are not hateful people. In 2008 it was the burning and necklacing of foreign nationals in painful images. In early 2021 it was the raiding of homes of innocent people like Ntate Victor Ramarafe in Dobsonville, or the extortion of foreign nationals who were legal in Alexandra, otherwise they were evicted from their homes. In Diepsloot it was killing of people like Elvis Nyathi and burning him alive after stealing money from his wife. More recently it was the blocking of women and children at the gates of schools and clinics in Soweto, the birth of children at gates of clinics in Tshwane and the stopping of South Africans from healthcare because they could not readily produce an ID. People are now looting food in their names, men are beating women in hair salons all in a build-up of a hostel-centric hate groups’ activities. The more human rights atrocities they commit, the quicker they engineer their self-destruction, because South Africans have an irrefutable instinct to be human. South African people cannot reconcile their hearts with violence being committed against innocent human beings, and this is the lesson these hate groups will learn. The toxicity of Twitter is not reality, no South African mother will support a woman giving birth on a pavement because they don’t have a passport. No man or woman will cheer as a human being burns alive because they could not say elbow in Nguni. No sane South African will support looting of shops of the food that YOU claimed was poisonous, leaving them with no close and readily available access to food. There is a reason why political parties who campaign on violence against foreign nationals collectively and combined cannot surpass 5% in a national vote - South African people inherently are not monsters. It is just sad that the self-destruction of these hate groups, first requires tragedy and casualties, but it is alway inevitable.

This is Jacob Zuma, the former President of South Africa, whose political party, MK, has been encouraging South Africans to chase not only undocumented immigrants out of the country, but even black Africans who are legally living and working in South Africa. His campaign vehicles have been driving around KwaZulu-Natal with loudspeakers urging people to drive black Africans out of the country, regardless of whether they are in South Africa legally or not. And then, after all of that, he flew to India to meet the Gupta family, the very people accused of helping to orchestrate the industrial-scale corruption that nearly bankrupted South Africa through state capture. When they faced accountability, they ran away from South Africa, first for Dubai and then for India. Think about the contradiction. A man whose campaign encourages hostility towards fellow Africans is, at the same time, embracing foreign friends who became synonymous with one of the biggest corruption scandals in South African history. By his own admission in this video, he has made it clear that he is unhappy with the direction the country took in pursuing those implicated in state capture. Meanwhile, ordinary black South Africans are being mobilised against fellow black Africans who are living in South Africa legally, while the political battle being fought is, in reality, about power, accountability and the legacy of state capture. They are being drawn into a campaign that serves political interests rather than addressing the country’s real challenges. History should record this moment. It should record the irony of fellow Africans being turned against one another while those accused of presiding over one of the darkest chapters of corruption in South Africa seek a return to political power. That is a tragedy that future generations should never forget. Imagine dehumanising fellow black Africans who look like you, speak languages like yours, and share the same continent, all so that Jacob Zuma’s Indian friends can return and loot South Africa again.

Yes, indeed, this is lawlessness by any standard. Even by banana republic standards, this is still lawlessness. Your country has a constitution, it has a government, it has a police service, and it has a ruling party. I am sure you can see that some of the people there are actually wearing ruling party T-shirts. It is lawless regardless of whoever does it. It is an embarrassment to South Africa as a country, what you are doing and what you are encouraging people to do. Your country has an immigration service. If people are in your country illegally, they should be arrested and deported through lawful processes. You do not go around destroying property, tearing down markets, and attacking people. It is illegal regardless of whoever does it. It is not illegal because I have said so. It is illegal because the laws of your country make it so. This is vigilantism, pure and simple, and it is tainting the reputation of South Africa, not only across Africa but across the world. If you have got satellite television in your home, you can see that these actions are being reported everywhere. It is not good for your country. This kind of barbarism undermines the rule of law, fuels division, and damages South Africa’s standing as a constitutional democracy. It is the actions of a few that are tainting the reputation of many. The average South African is not mindless like this. They respect the law, and they respect the fact that among them, in their communities, there are people from other countries. If those people are in the country illegally, you report them and the law takes its course through proper processes of arrest and deportation. You do not descend into mob justice, lawlessness, and destruction. That is not who South Africans are, and it must not be normalised.

These protesters were given political cover by Jacob Zuma’s MK Party and March and March, which are effectively pursuing the same agenda. The MK Party explicitly declared that even Africans who are legally documented must leave South Africa. These protesters have simply acted on that message. They listened to their political leaders and went out to intimidate, harass and target Africans who are lawfully in the country. This is exactly what is turning South Africa into a laughingstock in the eyes of the world. It hands ammunition to its critics, including countries such as Israel and political figures like Donald Trump, who point to scenes like these and argue that South Africa is descending into lawlessness. If people claim they are protesting against illegal immigration but then use that protest to loot businesses, harass and intimidate Africans who are legally in South Africa, as has been reported in this news reports, then this has nothing to do with illegal immigration. It is xenophobia. It is Afrophobia. That is precisely what those terms mean. It is deeply disturbing to watch South Africa take this dark turn, where black Africans are persecuted simply because they are African, even when they have the legal right to live and work in the country. This is not law enforcement. It is prejudice dressed up as activism. We warned from the very beginning that this movement was being driven by hatred of black Africans, not by a genuine concern for the rule of law. We were insulted, mocked and dismissed. Today, those who doubted us need only look at what is happening. The evidence is now in plain sight.
