🌊🌧 #MumbaiRains #floods: Why was flooding so severe in #Vasai, #Virar & #Nalasopara this time? 🌧️ The rainfall was exceptional across the entire region. Both Vasai-Virar and its surrounding river catchments witnessed very heavy to extremely heavy rains. However, the widespread flooding wasn't caused by rainfall over Vasai-Virar alone, it was the result of multiple factors occurring simultaneously, with enormous upstream river discharge, tidal locking and urban drainage systems struggling to cope with such unprecedented volumes of water. The Ulhas River, originating near Lonavala, received extraordinary inflows after its upper catchment recorded around 1569 mm of rainfall in just 3 days. Torrential rain across the Ulhas Valley, Pune Ghats and Thane interiors sent enormous volumes of water into Vasai Creek.🌊🏞 At the same time, intense rainfall over the Nashik Ghats ⛰️, Igatpuri, Trimbakeshwar, Shahapur and Palghar swelled the Vaitarna River, which drains into the sea just north of Virar. The Tungareshwar ranges ⛰️ also received torrential rain, with numerous streams and nallas adding further runoff into the Vasai-Virar drainage network. Meanwhile, Vasai, Virar and Nalasopara themselves were experiencing torrential rainfall of about 600-700mm in last 3 days, generating massive local runoff. The region was effectively jammed from both sides. Massive upstream river discharge coincided with high tides 🌊, also during Monsoon the seas remain already rough slowing the outflow into the Arabian Sea and creating a backwater effect that prevented creeks and stormwater drains from emptying efficiently. Such an extraordinary volume of water would have stressed any drainage system. However, rapid urbanisation, shrinking wetlands and mangroves, encroachment of natural drainage channels and increasing concretisation have significantly reduced the region's natural capacity to store and drain floodwater, making the impacts even more severe. This event was a classic example of record-breaking rainfall across multiple river basins, intense local rain, tidal locking and urban infrastructure struggling to cope with an unprecedented volume of water. Today, inflows into the river systems 🌊 remain high, and several areas may continue to experience waterlogging and flooding. However, with rainfall expected to gradually reduce from now, river levels should slowly begin to recede as the excess water drains into the sea. Even so, the impacts of this exceptional rainfall event are likely to persist for the next few days, especially in low-lying areas, until the entire drainage system returns to normal. 🌧️ #KokanRains #PalgharRains #ThaneRains Video credits: varun mundra & Vasai Virar Update

Baka Women Transform River Water Into Rhythm in Ancient Drumming Tradition. Deep in the rainforests of Central Africa, music is not limited to instruments made of wood or metal. For the women of the Baka people, the river itself becomes an instrument. Among the Baka, who live primarily in the forests of Cameroon, Gabon, and the Republic of the Congo, women practice a remarkable musical tradition known as water drumming. Standing waist-deep in a river or stream, they rhythmically strike the surface of the water with their hands, creating sharp, resonant sounds that echo through the forest. By carefully controlling the angle of their palms and the force of each strike, the women produce different tones—deep thuds, crisp slaps, and splashes that blend into intricate rhythms. When performed together, these sounds form complex musical patterns that accompany singing, celebration, and communal gatherings. This tradition is not just entertainment. It reflects the deep relationship between the Baka people and the forest environment that sustains them. Rivers, trees, animals, and the natural world are central to their culture, spirituality, and daily life. Transforming water into music demonstrates a creative harmony with nature that has been passed down through generations. Water drumming also highlights the important cultural role of women in Baka society. Through song, rhythm, and performance, they preserve stories, traditions, and collective identity.

URGENT ALERT: Landslide Blocks Teesta River Near Chyakoong, Downstream Areas Placed on High Alert Mangan, September 6, 2026: A massive landslide occurred early this morning above the Chyakoong River, opposite OC Bhir in North Sikkim. Roughly half of the hillside collapsed into the gorge, temporarily blocking the flow of the Teesta River. District administration and emergency response teams were mobilised immediately after the incident. Police personnel from Chungthang Police Station and Theng Check Post were deployed to the site to monitor the stability of the affected area and the behaviour of the blocked water. Officials said water levels recorded at Sankalang and Phidang outposts remained normal in the hours after the landslide, though the river water had turned heavily turbid and muddy. Both outposts were placed on round-the-clock monitoring. Assessment teams also flagged a wider downstream risk. The landslide debris has formed a natural dam-like blockage on a river that joins the Teesta, located around 60 km upstream from Reang Kongma and 40 km upstream from Rangpo, near the West Bengal border. Officials said this could lead to increased water release from upstream, and warned that a breach of the naturally formed blockage could send a sudden surge of water downstream, first affecting the Tintek area in Sikkim before reaching parts of Kalimpong, Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri. According to sources, senior officials held discussions with officers posted downstream to prepare for possible evacuations in case of an emergency. The Police Control Room in Sikkim has been activated and high-alert has been issued warning o vulnerable habitations along the lower belt of the Teesta River basin. The public, workers, anglers and vehicle operators have been advised to stay away from the riverbed, avoid fishing, and refrain from crossing suspension bridges and footpaths along the river until further notice. People were also urged to stay updated through official channels and not to act on unverified rumours circulating on social media. The Teesta River has since resumed its flow following the temporary blockage. Authorities have confirmed this update, but have asked residents in downstream and lower belt areas to remain alert and exercise caution near the riverbanks. The public is advised to avoid going close to the river until the situation is confirmed to be completely safe. Further updates are awaited from ground assessment teams.

It is getting cold, blustery and wet out there! 📡🥶 If you were watching the National Weather Service (NWS) radar data out of NWS Tampa Bay this afternoon, you would have noticed what appeared to be a sharp increase in the coverage of showers from one frame to the next over the Tampa Bay region. 📡 ☔️ In reality, the precipitation was not increasing. The trained NWS meteorologist and radar operator shifted the radar scanning strategy to better detect lighter, lower-level precipitation. Notice the change at the top of this radar animation with the “VCP”, or volume coverage pattern. Watch it change from VCP 215 to VCP 34. What does this mean? 🤔 The National Weather Service Doppler radar volume coverage pattern (VCP) modes determine how radar beams are emitted and the angle at which they scan the atmosphere. VCP Mode 215: This mode provides higher vertical resolution due to more elevation angles being processed. It typically includes more volume scans, focusing on detecting severe weather phenomena such as thunderstorms and tornadoes effectively. VCP Mode 34: This mode offers lower vertical resolution with fewer elevation angles. It is designed for less demanding weather situations, providing broader coverage and is often used during more stable weather conditions. As these sprinkles and light showers continue to develop and move ashore from the Gulf within a blustery northwest wind, much colder (and drier) air will overspread the area through tonight into Sunday morning when the potential exists for isolated flurries or frozen rain drops (i.e., sleet or ice pellets). VCP 34 typically features more lower elevation scanning angles compared to VCP 215. 📡Things to remember📡: Lower radar elevation angles sampled by VCP 34 are designed to scan the atmosphere closer to the ground. This design is beneficial for detecting broader weather patterns and identifying precipitation types that occur near the surface. Stay warm! #FLwx #Gasparilla City of Tampa Hillsborough County
