Adobe.. has released a tool that combines Generative Gaussian Splats with a Diffusion layer and it's not all over the internet? WHAT IS GOING ON :D I had to test this out ofc! Substance 3D viewer, the new 3d viewer just released by Adobe, not only supports viewing of a large, large list of 3d formats, but it also supports generating of 3d models as Gaussian Splats. Combine that with the built-in 3d to image functionality and you basically have at least a few of the steps I've been doing for the last year or so using multiple tools. Exciting stuff! The new Photoshop Beta also supports the 3D viewer and you can import 3d files directly in photoshop as smart objects linked to the viewer. The elements you prompt in based on your models, can be easily exported to your clipboard without backgrounds making it very easy to use this in your normal image editing workflows. I have a suspicion that we'll see much more of this in other Adobe tools and I'm very curious to see this used for things like this in more 3d tools than "just" Adobe Neo (which is fantastic btw). #adobe #art #gaussiansplatting

The #geometrynodes Curve Normals Proxy Rig is almost ready! You place it on the face and adjust some controls to line things up, and it just works. The controls can be worked with in lots of different ways. You can attach it to an existing rig or animate it. Those bones are controlling a mesh which controls the curve points, so you can also make Shapekeys on the meshes instead and Drive them to match other expression keys! The forehead above the top curve blends to Radial Normals, and under the chin blends to the actual mesh Normals. I'm adding the rest of the controls to allow completely arbitrary Normals per curve point, and then its just cleanup and it can be released! (There's lots more that can be added to it like falloff and interpolation controls, but if I try to put everything into the first version it'll never release.)

I've built a setup in Geometry Nodes to get data from bones, so now I can do things like make Normals from them, and I'm experimenting with much more. The Normal here is basically a cylinder around each bone. So it doesn't work that great around the shoulders, but its great on the arms and legs. Its the same idea as when you do radial/sphere Normals for a face or hair, but for the whole body.

I got a smart meter recently and saw you can download a HDF file with the data so I had the idea of writing a script that could parse that and show the data in a useful manner. However I discovered that someone has already done this and done a really good job on it. The video explains how it works. In simple terms it uses the ESB smart meter data and shows a breakdown of how much data you are using and when and also recommends plans and estimates what each one would cost based on the data. The tool is available at easier to read on Laptop or Tablet or then your phone to Landscape.

I'm putting a lot of attention into getting a high quality transfer for the Face Proxy Mesh we're adding to the Fondant Custom Normals Blender addon. Even if the proxy has great Normals, it will not matter if the transfer is distorted. A basic world space Nearest Surface (aka Nearest Face Interpolated) transfer can get screwed up if there are gaps between the meshes. And if they are different shapes and poly counts, there will be! So the first big piece of the puzzle is getting a clean transfer. Before transferring Normals, a transfer space is made and a UV map is transferred from the proxy. Then any other data needed can be transferred in that UV space. As long as it is right, any other data will be clean! (Normals or anything else you might want.) And a UV map is easy to debug because you can put a grid texture on it. If the grid is evenly spaced, then distortion is minimal. This clip shows the differences in distortion between a basic World Space transfer and a better transfer space made by blending Sphere projection and a simple projection of the face forward onto the proxy (used down the center line.) Different faces will need slightly different configuration. Most of this is automatic, but the addon will have some simple controls to adjust it to different face shapes.

In the final stages of testing my Blender Compositor Line Art addon before release. Here's a look at how it works on a very high detail character. We have lines based on toon shading and vertex color ID groups. You can see it works very cleanly in some areas, but then runs into issues in others. That is because this mesh is complex but doesn't have smoothed normals yet, which causes the toon shading to create very small shaded areas that become lines. (We'll see it with Smoothed Normals next update.) This is the double-edged sword of this method, and any other Screen Space Extraction method, including the new Raycast Node: they are extremely precise, which allows very high detail and fine control, but also means you need to guard against bad inputs. But my toolset gives you full control over what data you create lines from, so you can ensure clean ID groups, run lines on different Normals than you shade with, mask at any stage, or anything else you need! And of course, most line methods (especially Inverted Hull) completely fail on complex or dirty geometry.

AI Mocap tools are evolving at breakneck speed... and I could find more than 10 all compiled and compared in a list you can get by subscribing to the XR AI Spotlight newsletter (link on top of my profile). This is Cartwheel and the stepping on that box was one of the most solid I saw. There is a bit of floatiness in the feet and they are not perfectly grounded, but since I tested the tool, the team has pushed massive improvement. What AI mocap tool do you use in your workflow? What do you think of the new MJ editor? To me systems like that offer only the illusion of creative control.. they still take way too many of the creative choices. Good if you just want a pretty picture that is well within the understanding of the training data.. not so great for anything else. That said this is only based on a firsthand impression.. I'll be testing it more and will be happy to be proven wrong! Here's a comparison between the new editor and a more manual workflow in Photoshop using the ComfyUI Plugin. There's also a bit of the new Adobe Substance 3D viewer integration in PS for good measure. #art #ai

It holds the screw in front of your drill bit and lets go once the screw starts going into the material. Simple, useful, and definitely one of those prints that stays in the toolbox. 🧰 We printed ours on the Prusa CORE One L from Prusament PETG Galaxy Black.

$🧑‍🏫 How to make a glass/refraction shader: 🍷 Refraction will ultimately have the effect that whatever is behind your mesh should appear distorted by the surface of the mesh itself. We're not going for external caustics projection, just modelling glass-like, distorting "transparency". 🌆 In Unity, you can sample the *global* _CameraOpaqueTexture (make sure it's enabled in your URP asset settings), which is what your scene looks like rendered without any transparent objects. In Shader Graph, you can simply use the Scene Colour node. 🔢 The UVs required for this texture are the normalized screen coordinates, so if we offset/warp/distort these coordinates and sample the texture, we ultimately produce a distorted image. We can offset the UVs by some normal map, as well as a refraction vector based on the direction from the camera -> the vertex/fragment (flip viewDir, which is otherwise vertex/fragment -> camera) and normals of the object. 📸 Input the (reversed) world space view direction and normal into HLSL refract. **Convert the refraction direction vector to tangent space before adding it to the screen UV.** Use the result to sample _CameraOpaqueTexture. refract(-worldViewDirection, worldNormal, eta); eta -> refraction ratio (from_IOR / to_IOR), > for air, 1.0 / indexOfRefraction (IOR). IOR of water = 1.33, glass = 1.54... 💡 You can also do naive "looks about right" hacks: fresnel -> normal from grayscale, which can be used for distortion. Or distort it any other way (without even specifically using refract at all), really... 🧠 Thus, even if your object is rendered as a transparent type (and vanilla Unity URP will require that it is), it is fully 'opaque' (max alpha), but it renders on its surface what is behind it, using the screen UV. If you distort those UVs by the camera view and normals of the surface it will be rendered on, it then appears like refractive glass on that surface. > Transparent render queue, but alpha = 1.0.$

We can offset the UVs by some normal map, as well as a refraction vector based on the direction from the camera -> the vertex/fragment (flip viewDir, which is otherwise vertex/fragment -> camera) and normals of the object. 📸 Input the (reversed) world space view direction and normal into HLSL refract. Convert the refraction direction vector to tangent space before adding it to the screen UV. Use the result to sample _CameraOpaqueTexture. refract(-worldViewDirection, worldNormal, eta); eta -> refraction ratio (from_IOR / to_IOR), > for air, 1.0 / indexOfRefraction (IOR). IOR of water = 1.33, glass = 1.54... 💡 You can also do naive "looks about right" hacks: fresnel -> normal from grayscale, which can be used for distortion. Or distort it any other way (without even specifically using refract at all), really... 🧠 Thus, even if your object is rendered as a transparent type (and vanilla Unity URP will require that it is), it is fully 'opaque' (max alpha), but it renders on its surface what is behind it, using the screen UV. If you distort those UVs by the camera view and normals of the surface it will be rendered on, it then appears like refractive glass on that surface. > Transparent render queue, but alpha = 1.0.
