The Fondant Blender Custom Normals Addon version 2.1.0 is almost ready. For this update I've returned to the Laplacian Smooth modifier (in the $0 version). There's a lot of big improvements based on my testing and some problems users found. One of those is a classic problem in Laplacian Smoothing: Instability! For various reasons, certain areas of the mesh can end up with very small or large values that cause oscillations. In Position smoothing, this causes the mesh to explode. For Normals, we get crazy banding or checkboard shading. This happens at high iterations and high strength. The solution is to lower the strength. Sometimes 0.9 will do it, but sometimes you end up down at 0.5. That works, but then you have less smoothing. Now you need more iterations again to get to the same amount and it gets slower. And more iterations = more risk of instability. I've implemented Momentum Smoothing, which helps prevent weird movements and oscillations by keeping some of the movement from the previous iteration. This is technically less precise, but we don't care for smoothing toon shading. It works so well that you not only don't need to turn down the strength, you can even turn it up to 2 or even 3! That means less iterations, or really crazy amounts of smoothing!

Here is the Geometry Nodes Weighted Normals with Laplacian Blur on a full character (a vroid). It easily improves the shading even on game topology with almost no setup. I built this as part of my quest to improve real time toon shading. 3D anime models are popular, but use of dynamic light is rare even among high quality vtuber models. This is for several reasons, but a big one is simply that it takes a lot of Custom Normals work to make 3D cel shading not look like a jagged mess (other pieces of the puzzle are issues like deformations, multiple lights, etc). And fixing Normals is tedious, especially on existing game topology. I have focused on proxy meshes for priority areas like character faces, but they aren't an efficient solution for the whole body + outfit. I wanted something I could just throw on any model and make it at least not a jagged mess anymore even if it wasn't perfect. As you can see from this clip, this does that very well! And vertex groups can be used to control the style of the effect and power. It still can't smooth beyond what the topology density can support, but the topo itself is no longer a problem (for higher res, could be run on a subdivided version of the model and then baked to a Normal Map.) The only changes I made to this model were adding a weld modifier to merge split edges during interpolation, and a vertex group to select the skirt. I have not yet added full handling and logic for detecting edges with big angles like the skirt, or for handling boundaries like on the hair, so both those areas can get better too. You can also see that while it successfully smooths out the Face, it isn't really stylistically correct there. That is still best done with a proxy mesh to define a new shape. This is part of the tools I am working on for Fondant. We are putting together a Blender Addon to release this + a proxy mesh tool for the face, and are working on resolving other problems in-engine to fully bring dynamic light to real time 3D toon shading. Check out this test on a model by Joce This shows multiple line sets with different levels of detail being set to different thicknesses. And when zooming out, they scale to 0 and disappear at different rates. Stylistic LOD control! The addon includes tools for setting up these sorts of ID group lines conveniently, and also the scaling.

I'm putting a lot of attention into getting a high quality transfer for the Face Proxy Mesh we're adding to the Fondant Custom Normals Blender addon. Even if the proxy has great Normals, it will not matter if the transfer is distorted. A basic world space Nearest Surface (aka Nearest Face Interpolated) transfer can get screwed up if there are gaps between the meshes. And if they are different shapes and poly counts, there will be! So the first big piece of the puzzle is getting a clean transfer. Before transferring Normals, a transfer space is made and a UV map is transferred from the proxy. Then any other data needed can be transferred in that UV space. As long as it is right, any other data will be clean! (Normals or anything else you might want.) And a UV map is easy to debug because you can put a grid texture on it. If the grid is evenly spaced, then distortion is minimal. This clip shows the differences in distortion between a basic World Space transfer and a better transfer space made by blending Sphere projection and a simple projection of the face forward onto the proxy (used down the center line.) Different faces will need slightly different configuration. Most of this is automatic, but the addon will have some simple controls to adjust it to different face shapes.

The #geometrynodes Curve Normals Proxy Rig is almost ready! You place it on the face and adjust some controls to line things up, and it just works. The controls can be worked with in lots of different ways. You can attach it to an existing rig or animate it. Those bones are controlling a mesh which controls the curve points, so you can also make Shapekeys on the meshes instead and Drive them to match other expression keys! The forehead above the top curve blends to Radial Normals, and under the chin blends to the actual mesh Normals. I'm adding the rest of the controls to allow completely arbitrary Normals per curve point, and then its just cleanup and it can be released! (There's lots more that can be added to it like falloff and interpolation controls, but if I try to put everything into the first version it'll never release.)

Taking a look at Camera based changes to the Face Proxy Normals. 3D anime characters have the fundamental problem that Normals which produce the right shading from the front often don't from 3/4ths and side view without making big compromises. On this character, the puffiness of the cheeks means it doesn't work right. If we reduce them, we ruin the silhouette of the geometry. If we change the Normals further around the side to get a shading terminator that does work in both views, then when the light moves it will probably have new problems at other angles. There are combos that work pretty well for every angle, but they limit your face shape options. Everything is easier if you can make Camera based changes! This is rotating the Normals on the proxy before transfer to the face in Geometry Nodes. Its the same as rotating the bones shown at the start. Since there are only 3 spline profiles, its a bit low res to get this quite right, but you get the general idea. Its going to take some experimenting to figure out the best way to handle it all, but it will be much easier to author on the proxy than on the face.

Being Dominant means being the One in Control. Some people love it and some hate it, but either way, there is always someone in control and the areas where you are not the one in control, are where you have given that control to someone else! Being the one in control means being the one people TRUST to lead, to be in charge. And for us to hold that responsibility, we gotta be not only comfortable with that role, but to love it! To want it. Control holds negative connotations, yet if it is exerted by someone with positive intentions, it is very healthy. It means you trust yourself and don't need to rely on others to direct you. NOT being in control means chaos. It means helplessness. It means inability to make decisions. Or to take initiatives. It means you are the one that follows. And if that is what you actually desire you have to be conscious of that choice. Otherwise you fall into that role and then wonder why nothing goes as you want. And if you choose to follow, choose your leader wisely. There always is someone in control, someone in charge, someone that leads. There is always a power dynamic. Truth is, we feel safe with those in control. Especially when they show us that them being in that role is positive for us. But so many people trust others more than they trust themselves! Which means being constantly influenced by everyone else's option and advice... which makes then the ones in control of your life! Decide WHO you want to take control when you want or need it, but also choose when YOU should be The One in charge. Developing that self-trust requires radical self responsibility. Which is what people struggle with. Nobody wants to be responsible for anything. And then we blame everyone for why our lives are not what we want them to be. And if you DO want to dominate, start by controling your own Self, your own thoughts, your own life. You can't expect others to trust YOU if YOU don't. Think about it... those that are in control are the people that have the most influence in the world. So if conscious people who desire to create a positive change take more control/responsibility, it would literally change society as we know it.

Following my UFO research shared yesterday there has been a huge reaction, much of it very supportive but the best feedback I've been given is stuff like this! Where another pair of keen eyes and lateral thinking turns up interesting new information Polarity here demonstrates how the traditional Google map search for the base shows what looks like wasteland or construction, from 2017 And now I realise why some people were sending me odd questions about the base because unless you update it manually you don't see what is actually there now in 2025 And of course I am in the UK and we see many different versions of not just Google but other US-based information, some of it actually helps my other research as I appear to have access to some things that Americans don't, but it works both ways However I urge you to watch the full critique that Josh does which is very fair and very constructive helping me know what else I have not made clear or not looked at in enough detail Also I realise people are so suspicious of AI that they simply think I am some idiot that just asks it questions and waits for it to answer them; understandably I know because many people do this But if you listen to the Space that I hosted directly after posting yesterday or indeed look at the complete discussion I had with AI, which I have published in its entirety, hopefully you will see that researchers like myself use it only as a tool. For example I looked at architecture, Electro magnetic security, geology/construction and anomalies in building locations, none of which it volunteered. CSS Tip! ⭐️ You can use the lh (line-height) unit on background layers to emphasize multiple lines of text responsively without extra elements! ⚡️ h1 { background: linear-gradient(white, white), grey; background-size: 100% calc(var(--lines) * 1lh), 100% 100%; background-clip: text; color: transparent; } Here you emphasize the first two lines of the heading with white using a sized background-image layer It has a size of 2lh ✨ Then the rest of the element is colored with whatever other colors you want to use as layers. If you watch the video, you can see different colors used for different lines and then fade it out if you wish. You could do whatever you like with it 😎 Neat part is that it's responsive. The font-size is set with a clamp and you can resize the viewport or the element and the number of lines emphasized will remain 🤙 Last but not least, make sure to use background-clip: text and color: transparent so the background shines through 🔥 Also, note that if you're only looking to highlight the first line, you can still use the :first-line pseudo 🫶 Have a play with it and see what you can come up with! Did you know that in Blender you can have edge highlighting and ambient occlusion right in the regular 'Solid' shading mode? ✨ People were asking about my viewport shading settings, so here they are! 1. Press the small button on the top right of your viewport 2. Check 'Cavity', and set the type to 'Both'. World Space 'Valley' acts exactly like ambient occlusion. I like to disable the 'Ridge' here though, because inverted AO doesn't make sense to me visually 3. I also usually keep the 'Shadow' enabled for extra definition, but keep in mind that this is performance-heavy, and if you have millions of polys you may see stuttering 4. I also like to enable 'Backface Culling'. It's not uncommon to produce inverted geometry when you model. This setting allows me to see it immediately, and thanks to that, my geometry is always correct when I export it to Unity! 5. You can also select a different studio lighting preset, or go with a matcap if that's something you're into! 🚀 #b3d

I also like to enable 'Backface Culling'. It's not uncommon to produce inverted geometry when you model. This setting allows me to see it immediately, and thanks to that, my geometry is always correct when I export it to Unity! 5.
