Everyone understood the play on words and a lot of dark skinned ladies jumped on the trend... Let's not overthink this... Its like saying people who's name is not Esther felt left out...

100% agree with you, Olive. As a dark skinned woman in Nigeria, who has been made fun of by family and society because of my skin tone, the trend has rubbed me off the wrong way.

When you guys keep saying "It's not that deep" you do not understand underlying messages even in jokes. Subtle harmful messages gets digested in jokes and play. We are the only race of people who associate our original skin (blackness) with poverty and lack Y'all do it everyday.

I don’t think it’s that deep, it’s just doing a BEFORE and AFTER.

Thanks for this. Those that say “it’s not that deep” fail to understand that words are seeds. It’s also quite insensitive to the struggles that many have and continue to face. One day we will wake up & discover that we’ve created frankenstein, hopefully we wake up before then.

Before Hollywood crowned Betty Boop, there was baby Esther Jones, a black child performer, whose style, sound, and whole persona were stolen, softened, and sold back to America as “original“‼️ Baby Esther Jones, THE original Betty Boop‼️

You know what sucks about this? This will get a bazillion amounts of hate while in reality Betty Boop was based off a black Harlem dancer named “Esther Lee Jones”. Even the Official Betty Boop page acknowledges it. Now if the film is about THAT, I’d be even more excited.

Watched this from about 10ft away and was comforted that Phil’s lesson kinda broke Jon Rahm’s brain as much as it did mine.

This is the moment Florida Evans finds out James is dead in the Season 4 premiere of Good Times and Esther Rolle’s performance in this scene is one of the greatest pieces of acting in the history of Black television. What most people do not know is that this moment only happened because John Amos was fired. Good Times had no Black writers on the staff when it started and Amos kept pushing back on scripts he felt were inauthentic and demeaning to Black families. He was particularly vocal about the show putting too much focus on J.J. saying Dynomite while two of his other children aspired to become a Supreme Court Justice and a surgeon. Esther Rolle left the following season for the same reasons.

⚖ This was when Dru Ramsamy broke down when she was reading how Andrea Johnson lied about her at the Commission. How the statements were forged and fabricated.
