Shanghai vessel movements fall 70% as port braces for Typhoon Saudel Shanghai is bracing for further disruption as Typhoon Saudel approaches China’s east coast. According to #MarineTraffic data, Shanghai recorded 1,506 port-call movements in the latest 24-hour period, around 70% fewer than the 5,039 movements recorded during the preceding 24 hours. The latest total comprised 673 arrivals and 833 departures, reflecting a sharp slowdown as operators adjust schedules around the storm.

The Philippines can’t catch a break in the wake of Typhoon Kalmaegi (TinoPH), because just as that system heads deeper into the Vietnamese jungle, a new leviathan has emerged from the depths of the Pacific. On the right side of this satellite loop is Tropical Storm Fung-wong, a sprawling embryonic cyclone in the Philippine Sea. She may be weak and disorganized now, but the environment ahead is going to be favorable for rapid intensification. The island of Luzon is her most likely target for landfall. Watch this one closely.

Really remarkable. Major Hurricane #Erick probably nearing Category 4 status overnight Wed-Thur AM. We won't know for sure until the next hurricane hunter recon flies in. Oaxaca going to take a rare landfall Thursday from a major hurricane. If you watch the loop the rugged terrain of the Sierra Madre Mountains may be pushing the storm unexpectedly due west now. If you are wondering, loosely and generally, but not always, a crazy busy Pacific means a quiet and tranquil Atlantic. Which is the case now.

I am almost sure that #Tampa, #Florida will be spared the worst of #hurricane #Milton and it appears very likely the storm may make landfall and a direct hit on #FortMyers. For most of the night Milton has been hugging the lowest level on National Hurricane Center's projected path (cone) or has wandered south of it a few times. Since then it has been pretty much following the lowest point of the cone right into Fort Myers. There is still a possibility it may track slightly south of there, just north of #Naples.

It’s quiet - now - as we head into peak season, but that may change soon. The Atlantic has been under large scale sinking, crushing tropical development. But rising air from the Pacific is rounding the bend, and heading into the Atlantic in the coming weeks. That will cause favorable conditions for hurricanes to develop especially by mid September, but there’s a wave moving off Africa right now with a good chance of development later this week/weekend.
