Abu Dhabi 🇦🇪 developed a paranoid narrative and convinced itself that Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman 🇸🇦 had asked President Trump 🇺🇸 to impose sanctions on the UAE over its support for genocide in Sudan / Al-Fashir. This never happened. They also assumed that Washington was unaware of Abu...

The Kurdish-British politician Nadhim Zahawi, who has joined the UK Reform Party, is seen as a key fixer for Masrour Barzani, helping arrange contacts and business ties with the Bin Zayed leadership in Abu Dhabi. Zahawi was present during Masrour’s recent visit with MBZ, during a UAE minister’s visit to Erbil, and even more recently when Areen Masrour Barzani travelled to Abu Dhabi to attend a football match. When KRG oil was reportedly being smuggled until recently via Iran to the UAE, a reliable source said Zahawi was among the key intermediaries who helped find buyers and then helped advise how to reroute and reinvest the revenue, especially given the UAE’s role as a financial hub for investment into Europe and the UK as well but also in the UAE itself. Zahawi’s close ties to Abu Dhabi are also said to have helped his move to the Reform Party, since its leader, Nigel Farage, is likewise reported to have strong links to the UAE’s rulers. Farage was, notably, at the same Abu Dhabi F1 event in December that Masrour attended. That does not mean the two met, but it places them increasingly within the same UAE-centred network. Masrour and his sons’ ties to Abu Dhabi’s rulers appear close enough that they spent their New Year holiday there. This is not necessarily promising, given the growing UAE–Saudi rivalry, where choosing sides could become a liability. It could also place Masrour and his son Areen, who is now reportedly befriending the children of Abu Dhabi’s rulers, on a track that might put them on the opposite side to that of Turkey’s interests. Either way, the Barzani–MBZ relationship is something that deserves closer scrutiny.
