Rep. Eugene Vindman is calling on the Trump administration to release the transcript of a "concerning" 2019 phone call between President Donald Trump and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman after the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi. "The Khashoggi family and the American people deserve to know what was... said on that call," Vindman said Friday at a news conference on Capitol Hill. Vindman said he reviewed the call while working as a legal adviser to the National Security Council during Trump's first term. "Out of all the calls with foreign leaders that I reviewed, two stood out as the most concerning," he said. "The first is well known, the call with [Ukrainian] President [Volodymyr] Zelenskyy that led to Trump's first impeachment. The second is a call between Mr. Trump and Mohammed bin Salman." On Thursday, Vindman, along with 37 other House Democrats, sent a letter to Trump demanding that he release the transcript. The move comes after Trump hosted the crown prince, who is the de facto leader of Saudi Arabia, at the White House earlier this week. During that visit, Trump dismissed the U.S. intelligence community’s finding that the crown prince approved the plan to kill Khashoggi in 2018. "Given President Trump's disturbing and counterfactual defense of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman this week, I felt compelled to speak up on behalf of the Khashoggi family and the country that I serve," Vindman said.show more
