LLM agents have demonstrated promise in their ability to automate computer tasks, but face challenges with multi-step reasoning and planning. Towards addressing this, we propose an inference-time tree search algorithm for LLM agents to explicitly perform exploration and multi-step planning in interactive web environments. It is the first tree search algorithm for LLM agents that shows effectiveness on realistic and complex web environments: on the challenging VisualWebArena benchmark, applying our search algorithm on top of a GPT-4o agent yields a 39.7% relative increase in success rate compared to the same baseline without search, setting a state-of-the-art success rate of 26.4%. On WebArena, search also yields a 28.0% relative improvement over a baseline agent, setting a competitive success rate of 19.2%.

JARVIS-1: Open-World Multi-task Agents with Memory-Augmented Multimodal Language Models paper page: Achieving human-like planning and control with multimodal observations in an open world is a key milestone for more functional generalist agents. Existing approaches can handle certain long-horizon tasks in an open world. However, they still struggle when the number of open-world tasks could potentially be infinite and lack the capability to progressively enhance task completion as game time progresses. We introduce JARVIS-1, an open-world agent that can perceive multimodal input (visual observations and human instructions), generate sophisticated plans, and perform embodied control, all within the popular yet challenging open-world Minecraft universe. Specifically, we develop JARVIS-1 on top of pre-trained multimodal language models, which map visual observations and textual instructions to plans. The plans will be ultimately dispatched to the goal-conditioned controllers. We outfit JARVIS-1 with a multimodal memory, which facilitates planning using both pre-trained knowledge and its actual game survival experiences. In our experiments, JARVIS-1 exhibits nearly perfect performances across over 200 varying tasks from the Minecraft Universe Benchmark, ranging from entry to intermediate levels. JARVIS-1 has achieved a completion rate of 12.5% in the long-horizon diamond pickaxe task. This represents a significant increase up to 5 times compared to previous records. Furthermore, we show that JARVIS-1 is able to self-improve following a life-long learning paradigm thanks to multimodal memory, sparking a more general intelligence and improved autonomy.

Tencent announces AppAgent Multimodal Agents as Smartphone Users paper page: Recent advancements in large language models (LLMs) have led to the creation of intelligent agents capable of performing complex tasks. This paper introduces a novel LLM-based multimodal agent framework designed to operate smartphone applications. Our framework enables the agent to operate smartphone applications through a simplified action space, mimicking human-like interactions such as tapping and swiping. This novel approach bypasses the need for system back-end access, thereby broadening its applicability across diverse apps. Central to our agent's functionality is its innovative learning method. The agent learns to navigate and use new apps either through autonomous exploration or by observing human demonstrations. This process generates a knowledge base that the agent refers to for executing complex tasks across different applications. To demonstrate the practicality of our agent, we conducted extensive testing over 50 tasks in 10 different applications, including social media, email, maps, shopping, and sophisticated image editing tools. The results affirm our agent's proficiency in handling a diverse array of high-level tasks.

Introducing Tether 🪢, a fun little idea to scale data by having our robot “play” in the real world for over 24 hours, throughout the day and overnight—improving policies from zero to mastery with minimal supervision! But play is messy, with out-of-distribution scenarios that are hard to anticipate. To perform autonomous functional play in the real world, from just a handful of demos, we propose a highly robust few-shot imitation method that warps demo trajectories using visual correspondences. Meta presents Sapiens Foundation for Human Vision Models discuss: We present Sapiens, a family of models for four fundamental human-centric vision tasks - 2D pose estimation, body-part segmentation, depth estimation, and surface normal prediction. Our models natively support 1K high-resolution inference and are extremely easy to adapt for individual tasks by simply fine-tuning models pretrained on over 300 million in-the-wild human images. We observe that, given the same computational budget, self-supervised pretraining on a curated dataset of human images significantly boosts the performance for a diverse set of human-centric tasks. The resulting models exhibit remarkable generalization to in-the-wild data, even when labeled data is scarce or entirely synthetic. Our simple model design also brings scalability - model performance across tasks improves as we scale the number of parameters from 0.3 to 2 billion. Sapiens consistently surpasses existing baselines across various human-centric benchmarks. We achieve significant improvements over the prior state-of-the-art on Humans-5K (pose) by 7.6 mAP, Humans-2K (part-seg) by 17.1 mIoU, Hi4D (depth) by 22.4% relative RMSE, and THuman2 (normal) by 53.5% relative angular error.

Can reinforcement learning from AI feedback unlock new capabilities in AI agents? Introducing Motif, an LLM-powered method for intrinsic motivation from AI feedback. Motif extracts reward functions from Llama 2's preferences and uses them to train agents with reinforcement learning. On the complex NetHack game, Motif solves previously unsolved tasks without needing any expert demonstrations. Surprisingly, Motif's reward leads to better game score than the one obtained by using the score itself as a reward. Given access to an event captioning mechanism, a few properties make Motif a general method: • it is entirely based on open models • the LLM doesn't need direct access to the environment dynamics (e.g., its source code) • the LLM doesn't need to understand observation and action spaces The best part? 🚀 New Paper: Pixel Reasoner 🧠🖼️ How can Vision-Language Models (VLMs) perform chain-of-thought reasoning within the image itself? We introduce Pixel Reasoner, the first open-source framework that enables VLMs to “think in pixel space” through curiosity-driven reinforcement learning. Current VLMs reason only in text — even when grounded in rich images or videos, their logical steps are verbalized in natural language. This restricts their ability to interrogate visual evidence and demonstrate how conclusions are drawn. 🔍 So we ask: What if we could make VLMs "show their work" by reasoning directly in the pixel space? Inspired by GPT-o3’s "think-in-image" ability, we propose a framework where VLMs use interactive visual operations — zoom, select-frame, highlight — to reason through complex visual inputs. To do this, we design a two-stage training process: Instruction tuning with synthesized visual reasoning traces. Reinforcement learning with curiosity-driven reward to balance exploration between pixel and text reasoning ✨ With this, Pixel Reasoner achieves near-SoTA performance on many information-rich multimodal benchmarks: 📊 84% on InfographicsVQA 🧠 84% on V* benchmark 🧩 74% on TallyQA-Complex It also achieves strong accuracy of 68% on MVBench (a video benchmark). 🚨 BREAKING: Microsoft's first robotics foundation model! 🤯 Microsoft just announced Rho-alpha (ρα), their first robotics model derived from the Phi series of vision-language models. Rho-alpha translates natural language commands into control signals for robotic systems performing bimanual manipulation tasks. Commands like "push the green button with the right gripper," "pull out the red wire," "flip the top switch on," or "turn the knob to position 5" get executed directly by dual-arm robots. What makes this different from standard vision-language-action (VLA) models is the additional modalities. Rho-alpha is a VLA+ model that adds tactile sensing to the perceptual mix, with plans to incorporate force feedback. On the learning side, the model is designed to continually improve during deployment by learning from human feedback. The training approach combines trajectories from physical demonstrations and simulated tasks with web-scale visual question answering data. Since teleoperation data is scarce and expensive, Microsoft is using NVIDIA Isaac Sim on Azure to generate physically accurate synthetic datasets via reinforcement learning. These simulated trajectories get combined with commercial and open physical demonstration datasets. The model is currently under evaluation on dual-arm setups and humanoid robots. Microsoft is opening an Early Access Program for organizations interested in evaluating Rho-alpha. Robots that can adapt to dynamic situations and human preferences are more useful in real environments and more trusted by the people operating them. A new paper proposes something different: a way for robots to self-improve directly from their failures in the real world. It’s called PLD (Probe, Learn, Distill). The idea: instead of collecting endless human demos, let the robot figure out where it fails, learn how to recover, and then distill that knowledge back into its main model. If you want a vision encoder for dexterous manipulation, what should be the most important part to model? 🤔 Current standard models like CLIP, SigLIP, and DINOv2 have an incredible grasp of semantics and spatial details. But they lack the action-centric structure needed for downstream visuomotor control. But collecting annotated robotic trajectories at scale is SUPER expensive and largely unrealistic. So, how do we bridge this gap? arXiv Papers → LLM Artifacts This is how I keep up with AI research now. It's like having access to the most personalized arXiv feed. Automations run everyday to curate papers based a set of rules and insights. Curated papers are indexed and power the artifacts. Agent convert papers to LLM wikis (based on Andrej Karpathy idea), which means insights are indexed and easily searchable and reusable. I feel like LLM Artifacts is the natural evolution to LLM Wikis. It's about making that knowledge actionable. Artifacts are customizable via agents. Artifacts can interact with agents and are dynamic in nature. Anything can be injected into the artifact as needed (insights, components, suggested experiments, action items, etc). I can take action on Artifact items with my agent orchestrator (Electron app). So I can ask questions about any paper and automate experiments in the background right from within the artifact. This is more than a visual. It's not a single prompt. It's several proactive agents coordinating to surface interesting facts, knowledge, and insights that I can act on a researcher. Agents are not just for generating useful artifacts, they are useful to keep learning and staying on the cutting edge of knowledge. Stay tuned for more.
