It is a matter of immense happiness and encouragement for the people of Assam that Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi ji, in today’s #MannKiBaat, highlighted Assam’s efforts towards protecting nature and restoring our precious wildlife habitats. The transformation unfolding at Sonai Rupai Wildlife Sanctuary is particularly close to our hearts. Areas that had remained under encroachment for decades have been reclaimed for nature, habitats are being restored and today we are witnessing a sight that gives us tremendous hope- elephants and other wildlife are once again moving freely through landscapes that rightfully belong to them. Adarniya Pradhan Mantri ji also spoke about Assam’s remarkable journey in conserving the pygmy hog, one of the world’s rarest mammals, which had once reached the brink of extinction. From just a handful of animals, sustained conservation, scientific breeding, habitat restoration and reintroduction efforts have helped bring their numbers to nearly 200. This is what long-term conservation can achieve when Government, scientists, conservationists, forest personnel and local communities work together with a common purpose. For us, protecting Assam’s forests and wildlife is not merely an environmental programme- It is a responsibility towards generations yet to come. Our efforts in this direction will continue, we will free up our land from encroachers and work towards protecting every species. My gratitude to Adarniya Pradhan Mantri ji for acknowledging our efforts in wildlife conservation.
