Sometimes, we engage in actions without fully acknowledging their impact on the survival of communities and nations. One such action is the destruction of the earth's greenery due to economic and social activities, leading to extreme weather conditions and natural disasters that destroy life and infrastructure. The U-green program is an initiative spearheaded by the passionate Umeme community to rejuvenate the earth. Its goal is to reverse the triple planetary crisis of climate change, nature and biodiversity loss, pollution, and waste. The contrasts are stark. While some communities struggle for clean air, water and dignified living conditions, others continue to consume far beyond the limits of what our planet can sustain. It is time to stop treating environmental action as an optional extra. It is time to move beyond token gestures and towards meaningful change. This #WorldEnvironmentDay, let us remember that every choice we make has an impact on nature, on the climate, and on each other. Some things we can all do: 🌿 Refuse single-use plastics and avoid unnecessary plastic consumption. 🌿 Segregate and manage waste at source. 🌿 Waste less. Consume mindfully. 🌿 Protect forests, trees, wetlands and natural ecosystems. 🌿 Support organisations working for wildlife conservation and environmental protection. 🌿 Work with local authorities and communities to scale solutions that restore ecosystems and build resilience. 🌿 Invest in businesses and innovations that place people and planet at the heart of progress. These are some of the things I try to do. Some of the things we can all do. The environment is not separate from us. It is the source of every breath we take, every meal we eat, every drop of water we drink. Let us not look away from reality. Let us act with courage, urgency and hope. For nature. For climate. Buildings are rising where nature was meant to hold and drain floodwaters. When we destroy these natural buffers, we shouldn't be surprised when the water comes looking for its space. The rain is only doing what rain does. We are the ones changing the landscape. Protect our wetlands. Enforce the laws. Build responsibly. Our future depends on it.

At ‘The Fela Debate’ in commemoration of 2025 Felabration, I echoed the timeless wisdom of the Abami Eda: 'Water no get enemy.' In Lagos, a city that lives and breathes water, it is more than a lyric, it is our reality and our guiding principle. The track released in 1975, 50 years after, is still as instructive in 2025. It carries in it, wisdom for humanity. Our true enemy is not the water that surrounds us, but the actions that turn this vital ally against us: the illegal construction on floodplains, the reckless dumping in drainage channels, and the destruction of our wetlands. The recent flooding in areas like Parkview, Banana Island, and Lekki are not natural disasters, they are man-made crises. The enforcement of our environmental laws will be relentless. At the same time, we are building a sustainable future, from the ban on single-use plastics that is allowing our drains to breathe again, to transforming waste into wealth at Olusosun.
