Adaption Labs CEO Sara Hooker says data centers in space are "pretty bonkers", and explains what the current consensus gets wrong: "Most co-located hardware is pretty much for training. I think that's why you care [about Space], otherwise you can distribute. Inference compute, which is where everything's moving towards,...

Atreides' Gavin Baker says that once Starship is reusable, the economics of orbital compute crush the economics of terrestrial compute. He lays out the math: "Once $SPCX can reuse Starship, the math for orbital compute becomes pretty compelling." "It's $60B to bring on a GW terrestrially. $25B is power and cooling — you don't need that in space. And so the right comp for that $35B in IT equipment — GPU, CPU, switches, memory, storage — is that $25B [in power and cooling] vs. the cost of launch." "And once Starship is reusable, I think the cost to launch is $5B. So that means you can put a GW into space for [$40B]. The GW on earth is $60B."

ASML CEO on Elon Musk's Data Centers in space and Terafab: "I think you need a certain amount of data centers and they will be in space, they will be on the earth. I think the discussion about data centers in space is to address another potential bottleneck in the ecosystem, which is energy. I think the discussion around putting data center in space is there because if you do that, the energy consumption or the energy availability will be there, about trying to solve another potential big issue, which is energy for data center. I think the Terafab is an example of a major fab project."

ELON MUSK: “The way to expand compute is really in space. There’s a lot of room in space. And if you look at the size of Earth relative to the Sun or relative to the Solar System, you realize just how tiny it is. We’re very, very tiny. We only receive about half a billionth of the Sun’s energy. So you can really think of Earth as being like a tiny dust mote in a vast darkness. So the way to expand compute without, you know, using up all the land on Earth is to do so in space. And then you can do it without using space for power and water on Earth; you can just do it in space. So I think we’ll probably be launching our first AI satellites next year, and then we’ll be able to do that, I think, at large scale in about two years.”

Data centers in space are a "no brainer." SpaceX's 1st employee Tom Mueller (Tom Mueller) on Elon Musk's plan to move compute into space: "It makes the most sense of anything to move to space. All you need as an input is power, and all you have as an output is data." "You move it to space, you have all the power you would ever need, and you transmit that data back down on a terawatt laser beam—it's solved. It's just so simple."

“There are more companies than ideas by quite a bit. Compute is large enough such that it's not obvious that you need that much more compute to prove some idea. AlexNet was built on 2 GPUs. The transformer was built on 8 to 64 GPUs. Which would be, what, 2 GPUs of today? You could argue that o1 reasoning was not the most compute heavy thing in the world. For research, you definitely need some amount of compute, but it's far from obvious that you need the absolutely largest amount of compute. If everyone is within the same paradigm, then compute becomes one of the big differentiators.” Ilya Sutskever

Jeff Dean says he's bullish on specialized hardware because a handful of workloads will be a lot of the world's compute "I'm pretty bullish on more and more specialized hardware, because I think that's the way you really get much more efficient systems." "And we now have workloads where there's like a handful of workloads that are going to be a lot of the compute in the world." "And so if you think about that, that is crying out for specialization." "The problem with specialization is if what you want to do changes in the future, then the thing you've lovingly crafted in hardware for maybe two years is no longer perhaps as relevant."

SITUATION EXPLAINED: Cowboy Space Corp. (fka Aetherflux) raises $275M From founder Baiju Bhatt (prev co-founder of Robinhood): "Our mission is to power humanity from the high frontier." "The concept is about building data centers in space. You can use the stage mass, the actual structure of the upper stage of the rocket to do the job of data centers in space." "You can reuse that mass and volume for the radiator, where our concept calls for actually deploying out the fairing of the rocket as a big radiator." "By going with one monolithic satellite, which is the upper stage of the rocket, you get more GPUs that are interconnected." "So rather than distributing it out over a bunch of smaller satellites, the simplest way to kind of think about that is if you had two racks of GPU servers, one was in this building and one was in that building across the street, that strictly worse than them being in the same building." @emmysteuer

SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell on data centers in space: “There is an expense to put data centers on the ground. You have to buy real estate, and as soon as someone finds out a supercompute center is going in, real estate goes from $3,000 an acre to $180,000 an acre. The time lag is incredible. Permits and licensing are pretty stifling. People are talking about generators in three years.” “We need compute now. The demand is insatiable right now. People need compute now. We need it now. So why data centers in space? We own launch. We have great launch capability, and that path is very well known. The real estate in space is infinite. It’s free.” “The cooling is there. The radiator looks at deep space, the coldest thing ever out there, so free cooling. You can put satellites in orbit that always face the sun. We’ll be making our own solar panels too. We’re building a factory outside Austin.”

Q: Have you been reluctant to lean into your gender on the campaign trail? Vice President Harris: I'm clearly a woman, I don't need to point that out to anyone. What most people really care about is, can you do the job? And do you have a plan? I think that's part of why people are exhausted with Donald Trump and his approach, because it's all about himself and his personal grievances and not about the American people

Samo Burja on why the first real reason to industrialize the moon will be building weapons, not data centers: "Weaponry on the moon might prove surprisingly important. You can build a bunker on the moon. In Earth orbit that's not possible, you'll have a shooting war where the satellites are destroyed pretty quickly." "I'm bearish on stealth technology. Even if there are thousands of things in orbit, it's easy to do a full sweep just by pointing cameras at space. Some photons bounce the wrong way, use some AI, and you get a lock on where that satellite is orbiting." "On the moon, you can go under the surface. You can have launch sites, make drones, make satellites there. That might be where the capability for space warfare truly develops." "I'd bet more on that than AI data centers, because the GPU is about the most complex thing humans have made. There might be a military industrial drive to lunar industrialization." Samo Burja

"The most important thing in the next 3-4 years is data centers in space. In every way, data centers in space, from a first principles perspective, are superior to data centers on earth. In space, you can keep a satellite in the sun 24 hours a day. The sun is 30% more intense, which results in six times more irradiance than on Earth. So you don't need a battery. The cooling in these data centers is incredibly complicated. Space cooling is free. You just put a radiator on the dark side of the satellite. The only thing faster than a laser going through a fiber optic cable is a laser going through absolute vacuum. Link satellites with lasers, and you have a faster and more coherent network than any data center on Earth."

"You can either produce excellence or you can avoid criticism. But you cannot do both of those. The reason that you don't have certain excellence that you want is because you are afraid of getting criticized. You are afraid of the judgment that comes with it. You are afraid of standing out. You are afraid of being alone. You are afraid of people looking at you. You are worried about what people think of you. There are 2 categories of things in this world: 1) Things that are up to you 2) Things that are not up to you Which category does your reputation sit in? Your reputation is not up to you. I'm the one who associates your reputation with something, not you. You just do things. What's up to you? How you act. Your decisions. Your actions. That is up to you. Your reputation is not up to you. Here's how I know that: You all have a reputation about me and it's not in my control. I get to say and do whatever I say and do up here. I am in control of saying it. I am in control of doing it. The moment words leave my lips, who has control over what is done with those words? You! You are in control of what you think of me. And there's no way everybody in this room is going to think the exact same thing about me. No way. When it comes to exceptional, what we've got to understand is you can spend your whole life trying to avoid criticism and earn reputation, and it still won't be in your control. We can waste a lot of time missing out on excellence we could have been producing if we were just simply LESS trying to engineer what we wanted other people to think about us."
